The magic of the ZL1 engine was weight savings. An aluminum 427 block was quite a thing in 1969. The aluminum engine block introduced several headaches with cooling and tuning, and some drag racers replaced the engine with an iron block 427.

@@JimS870 I never said that aluminum was wrong for cooling. I said making the block out of it introduced cooling headaches. There's a subtle difference. Just for a second think of heat cycling. Metallurgy for one. The aluminum alloys of the time were not all that great for the thinwall casting technology of the day. The aluminum blocks would get more distorted than an iron block when they heated up. @@JimS870

@@JimS870 I think the problem is aluminum blocks need steels cylinder sleevs/bores. And the two dissimilar metals handle extreme heat very differently, causing head gasket problems I believe. Maybe other problems. That's the basics, anyway. That didn't take 20 mins, did it @bbb462cid.

I loved these cars back when I was a kid in the late sixties and early seventies, many gear heads back then always working on their cars, hearing guys burning tires, I can still remember in my head, boy I miss them days, if only people would have kept their cars or didn’t wreak them, they would have been worth a lot of money 💰

If they had kept them and didn't wreck them, they would be more common and not worth so much. The main reason they are so valuable is because most people used the hell out of them.

If everybody who owned them, kept them, they'd be worth about the same as a Chevette. Lol. They were great looking back then, and fast in their day. They still look great, but in all honesty, everything else about them is underwhelming. Especially when compared to modern cars. The only way most of them were fast, was in a straight line. They handled and braked like crap. With modern advancements in performance parts though, with enough money, you can make them powerful, and make them handle like modern cars.

I remember seeing a 427 COPO Nova up for sale for $5000 Canadian (up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) in the local AutoTrader back in the late 1970s. However, back then no one even knew what COPO meant.... Most of us small town locals were all into Hot Rod Magazine which meant Hooker Headers, Edelbrock Cams, chrome Cragar S/S 5 spoke rims, and B&M shifters..... Back then, one could also buy a used BOSS 429 Mustang or a 440 Superbird for $5000 as the oil prices had everyone worrying that we were going to run out of crude oil and buying a cheap 4 or 6 cylinder was the only way to go.....

Great video but some clarification is needed here. #2 The COPO was not for the 396 in a 1968 Nova. COPO 9738 was for the TH400 automatic to be made available with the big block engine. Up until that point, the big block was only available with a manual trans. Fred Gibb wanted to drag race the big block Nova with an automatic but NHRA required at least 50 be built by Chevrolet to allow it to be legal in the Stock Eliminator category. #1 Yenko did not build 38 Novas with the 427. Yenko ordered 37 Novas and 28 of them had the 427 swap. 9 were left as 396’s.

He never jacked it up, but he put Cragar S/S wheels on it, with G60-14's in the rear and E70-14's in the front. He later ordered a second design L-88 427 from Chevy and it arrived as a completely assembled engine, with an assembly date of Jan 1970. When my cousin got old enough to drive, my uncle sold the car, because he didn't want his son to drive it. The car would have been about 10 years old then.

My uncle's 427 Nova looked lower than most Novas, both front and rear. Were the 396 Novas like that? Was it just from the low profile tires? If Camaro spring were put on a Nova, would they change its height? A buddy had one 70 or 71 if I recall. He rebuilt the 396 with the hands on 'help' of his dad (an old hot roder) . Buddy was trying to keep the Nova pretty streetable, his dad had other plans. The old boy was a terrorist at the parts counter when buying components.. Once warmed up the car idled not too bad at 900 RPM. Buddy followed the break in period religiously. Right around 1,000 miles in his dad asked to take it for a spin which he did. About 3 hours later he got back home and told his son while handing him $250 'That ought to cover a pair of tires." (in the mid 70's it would) On his next drive the rear tires were almost slicks and the gas tank was full. I'd call that a pretty cool dad. Shifting into 3rd that 396 would set you back into the seat real hard and keep you there until it was time for 4th.

Didn't listen to all of the narration but I think this did not delete those. Maybe someone can't put up a long title to cover the whole specifics but the title did not say only factory available models. (I would have left the yenkos out, not factory). This list minus those is pretty fair for the kind of cars the average guy may be able to find and buy.

In 1969 Dick Harrel also built 1 of 1 Nova 427 ZL1, I would not know about it except I seen it with my own eyes in a Chevrolet Showroom New in 1969. I was still in school and had no money for a double price Nova, back in 1969 a new Nova SS 396/375HP was $3300.00, this Nova was double that cost. But I was able to sit in the car and dream.

And a few cars owned by Chevy engineers are even more rare and more powerful. As the owners die off, these cars get passed down, but still most are not known. Occasionally one will be seen at the Gratiot Cruise or Woodward Cruise. Licensed and on the road or occasionally without license or even VIN. They are real. They exist. And there were dealers that ordered and/or build one or two cars that remain widely unknown. They may or may not still exist. I have seen a couple. Documentation is the problem with such cars. But they were built and some are out there. When found, they are identified as "clones" or otherwise by "experts".

I'd like a 62 Z11. I believe they were assembled with factory provided parts after the fact. A ZL1 Corvette (1969) would be the rarest. Its either two or three of them. I would settle for a Z16. No mention of the Mystery engine cars of 1963 (?). They were the predecessors of the 396/427. L88's? I passed on a 1967 L89 Corvette. Only 16 made...a 427 435 with L88 heads. I thought too much money at the time.

Don Yenko got killed in a plane crash with Jerry Spear, a Cessna 210-M that crashed on landing at Yeager Airport in Charleston, West Virginia, on Thursday, March fifth, 1987. I remember hearing it on the radio when it happened. I was driving a Nova that I bought from Spear Chevy when I heard the news. How's that for irony?

Video regarding the 1967 Chevelle SS396 being the first year to have the L-78 version of this engine is not correct. I owned a factory built 1966 Chevelle SS396 with the L-78 engine. It was a 4 speed with bench seat and 456 rear gear. It was rated at 375hp @ 56 hundred rpm with solid lifters that I was always adjusting! If I'm not mistaken, a few 1965 Chevelle SS were built with the original 396 Mark IV engines with the original horsepower rating of 425hp. I had a couple of friends that also had 66SS cars with the L-78 option.

A good friend of mine had a 350 HP 1967 Chevelle Super Sport 4 speed with buckets. He lost a couple times but not when I was with him although we did have a few close ones. The 375 HP 396's had solid lifters and required adjustment often is why people didn't order too many. These days they sit in the garage most of the time so everyone wants them.

The 1969 Corvette ZL1 is the most rare Chevy muscle car of all time. The 1963 Corvette Z06 should be in the top 5 too (199-202 units). The '67 L88 should be in the top three and the '68-69 L88 included too. NONE of the after-factory altered cars (Yenko, Harrel, etc.) should be included. If Corvettes aren't muscle cars then neither is an early 60's Super Stock Dodge or a '75 442. None of the Impalas or Camaros are either. Using a strict definition of muscle car means a mid size car with the company's bigger/biggest engine. So...a fuel injected '57 Chevy Black widow is a muscle car and any V8 Corvette is too...until about 1973. That's the cut off no matter the carline.
