Just my 2 cents: I live in Florida, a hot state 8 months out of the year and inside a parked car can reach 120 degrees or more. Most of the emergency items may not last long if left in the car. Picture swollen and leaking batteries. The tip of using a bag to keep the items in is the solution. During the hot months, keep the bag at home next to the door and take it with you whenever you're going to drive far or out of your local area and bring the bag back home when you return. It's a little hassle but make it a habit and it'll become second nature. If you're worried about forgetting the bag the day you will really need it, keep the "heat-proof" items in the car permanently.
@RandomReviewsForMe5 ай бұрын
@@frankgallego3782 Great call out on outside ambient temperature, and how it can affect items left in your car. I live in the Midwest where it's hot for about a month and a half to two months of the year. So excessive heat wasn't top of mind when describing the storage of these items. Thank you so much for the great idea!

What I found useful is to use an ice chest or some type of insulator, ice chest usually work for me. If you keep your bag small enough you can place your car bag in the ice chest or just the tools that need to be kept below a certain temperature. I can remember breakdowns before the era of the cell phone, a pocket full of change for the telephone box was useful as well as an idea where the nearest one was. Yes you sometimes had to knock on the door of a remote farmhouse or a country pub. Last time I had a blowout it was on a remote single track Welsh road on christmas day, no room to change a tyre, I had to drive a couple of miles on the flat tyre to find somewhere to change it. I have had times when I have found forestry workers to haul me out of a ditch with a tractor, or the time when my scooter broke down and I walked a couple of miles to the nearest farmhouse. The farmer drove me back to the scooter in his pick up and loaded the scooter into the back and drove it to the station where I was able to load it up in the goods van and take it home. Fun times

Where I live, it's obligated to have these in your car: - At least 1 hi-vis jacket (for the driver). More is great in case you have passengers with you. - Fire extinguisher - Red reflective triangle (that you put on the road when you're in trouble, I recently had to call a tow truck because I had a flat tire, and didn't know how to use the jack to get the spare on. The guy suggested a wooden plank in the car to put as stable underground for the jack if I were to ever need it again (and he also taught me how to use the jack). I have to disagree with you on the can of Fix-a-flat. A tire plug kit can take up less space. Also, some repair shops will be very upset at you if you don't tell them you used Fix-a-flat, because it makes a mess when they are repairing your tire. Also, I'd have to recommend a headlamp instead of a flashlight. It gives you the freedom of using your hands and not trying to fiddle with setting up your flashlight in just the right spot so you can see.

Back in the 80's I started working on vehicles, bought a moped that didn't run, I'm now pretty much a mechanic, had engine and transmissions out of cars before. When I left the auto and motorcycle repair industry in the early 90s I had quite a complete tool box. As each new vehicle came to me I made a toolkit just for it with whatever thought I'd need. Any tool that got used working on that vehicle went into it's kit. And included is a Haynes manual with some basic testing gear. Now I know that most people aren't going to replace a blown head gasket or oil pump driveshaft on the side of the road like me, but apply the principle and have tools enough to do what you yourself would do in a specific kit for each vehicle. The rest you need to carry is generic and applies to all vehicles.

I recommend keeping a list of the items in your bag. Put copies of the list in the bag itself and also on your phone, so you can remember what's in there. Also make notes of updates or replacements needed. I've had bags like this for years and tend to forget what's in them. And the ONE time I leave the bag home for whatever reason, is when I need something from it. For the ladies, I recommend a spare mascara and lipstick. I also keep a lightweight scarf. That has saved me from many chilly restaurants or outings. Good video, thank you.

Don't bother with small first aid kits. I consider them to be nothing more than a glorified box of bandaids. Make your own first aid kit concentrating on more serious injuries. That's what you really need help for. But yeah, include a few bandaids and antibiotic ointment and/or spray. Include scissors, good fine tweezers, and cortisone cream. Some OTC pain meds and even some of the more important prescription meds that you use. Don't forget to have a first aid book and read it once in a while to keep it fresh in your mind. It can all go in an inexpensive plastic tool box or a cheap backpack. We also keep a partial roll of toilet paper and personal wipes.

Educated old man opinions here. Lithium Ion Battery for consumer products recommended storage temperatures 35 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. I can see a lot of people upset with those silly little batterpowered toys in the heat of summer of the dead of winter. Have your vehicle battery tested twice a year. That's an easy preparation. Next step after that is jumper cables. A hand pump will get that tire inflated enough to drive a few miles. Tow strap with hooks rated in the tens of thousands of pounds and a buddy will get most vehicles out of a snowbank or ditch.. A thin plastic sheet may melt onto hot pavement.

Just one word of advice regarding battery booster packs. I would STRONGLY advise you to buy a CAPACITOR-based unit, rather than one which relies upon an internal battery. Murphy's Law is very clear on this - and it is a fact that the one time you need an independent power source to start your car when you've left the internal lights on overnight - any of those battery-powered boosters WILL BE FLAT TOO... On the other hand, those Boosters which contain a large capacitor DO NOT RELY ON AN INTERNAL BATTERY. They live in your glovebox or under a seat or in a toolbag, but the difference is that they have NO CHARGE in them. They work by extracting the few volts that will be in your 12v car or truck or boat battery, storing that in the capacitor, then - when a sufficient charge has built up in the booster - releasing it in a controlled manner, when you turn your Starter Switch. All of the above is learned from painful (cold) experience - and while it is true that a Capacitor-based Booster pack will cost more than one of those cheapo chinee battery versions, you KNOW that it will start your car in the depths of winter.

Good thoughtful list. I would add more tools, and a headlamp as well as a regular flashlight. As nice as it is to have a multitool, the design necessities make it limited and sometimes inconvenient and slower than "real" tools. I keep a contractor's 3 mil trash bag in the car for putting on the ground, and floor mats work pretty well too. I also have some space blankets in the glove box. Lots of stuff can be stored under seats, so they are not in the way but still available. Also, a spare key in your wallet! Forget all the dopey YT short videos about how to break into your car with a piece of string or whatnot. And for worst-case scenario, a get-home bag. Medical kit, emergency bivy sack, large multitool, empty large water bottle, maybe a couple of protein bars, batteries, space blanket etc etc. Five pounds of stuff might save your life.

@roberthunter69274 ай бұрын
My 2 cents: 1. A head-lamp is much better than a pencil torch. There are situations where "hands-free" is a bonus. 2, Try to make as many items as possible multi-purpose. [The Leatherman type multi-tool is a good example]. 3. If you are going to carry a rechargeable battery, perhaps think of "skins". For example, a cordless 1/2 drive "drill". Add a socket of the right size, and you have an easy way to loosen or tighten your wheel lug-nuts. By an air-compressor "skin" for the same Li-Ion battery, and you have an air pump. [You don't need a top tradesman brand, just something but cheap and reliable]. 4. Nearly all vehicles, especially ordinary "family cars", have really bad wheel wrenches and almost dangerous jacks. They are a waste of time. Get yourself a good quality hydraulic 'bottle jack", with some accessories. If your vehicle is one ton, get a 3 ton model. They are cheap and reliable. [But don't crawl under the vehicle unless oy have good axle stands]. The other thing you need is an X wheel wrench. These are less than $20. They come in both metric and imperial sizes, so you can get your specific lug nut size, AND be able to help out others. Add a one pound hammer. or even a brass mallet. 5. Test all of your kit out on a level driveway in good weather. Then you will know how you and the tools will perform under perfect conditions. It is going to be a bit harder on an uneven surface in bad weather, so take that into account. 6. There are TECHNICAL aspects to these "simple" repairs. An obvious one is how to connect those jumper leads/jumper battery. To change a spare, you must 'crack" the wheel nuts before taking the weight of the wheel with the jack. Double check that the jack is stable, and in the right spots. Loosen or tighten in a star pattern, and always thread the nuts on by hand so you don't cross thread them. And you can get a cheap but reliable torque wrench, and find out the specs for your vehicle, and how to use it. 7. under-tightening and over-tightening wheel nuts both have dangers. Under-tighten, and the wheel might fall off. Over-tighten, and you may ruin the tensile strength of the studs, AND not be able to undo the nuts on a roadside breakdown situation. 8. And of course, make sure that batteries, emergency tire sealer etc are charged and up to spec. 9. Watch videos on u-tube from a reliable content creator on how to do all these tasks. Or ask a qualified mechanic, or whatever. 10 The idea is to get yourself mobile again, without bruised knuckles or worse.

Glass breaker belt cutter. * together with much more, I live where I may have several hours walk to the nearest house, which might even be unoccupied (some are jusr seasonal), and near arctic circle, so shovel, sand,, tow straps, axe and other "self rescue" gear are in my kit, waaaay beyond the scope of this, not many need a 50x50cm plate to prevent jack from sinking in snow.
