9 REASONS WHY YOU SUCK AT DRUMS

HI friends! This video is much deeper than what the title suggests. I used this title to get peoples attention. (Well anyway....i think we musicians kind of talk like this anyway haha. )
The real things we are talking about here are issues every one of us face. Things that REAL life as an artist brings us. Why no one talks about this is a mystery. But I am tired of an online scene that brushes over essential things like this that absolutely need to be talked about. We all need encouragement. First, I’ve got all the equipment I would ever need. I’ve got all the time in the world to practice when I want. I’ve got all the Drum books, Modern Drummer Magazines and all the best Instructional videos. But, all those things are completely worthless if your dealing with Anxiety and Depression like I do. Anxiety and depression as of recently has been making it very difficult if not impossible to practice and stay motivated. Some times I can’t even look at my drums cause it just makes me sad. I just can’t seem to find the courage to start playing my drums again. And I know this is what I’m suppose to do. I was born a drummer. I’m about to turn 47. All I’ve Ever known is music and the drums. I just finished watching your video and you’ve shared something I’ve been desperately been needing to hear for a long time. So thank you. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, that if you’re going through any type of pain, use that pain. Use that pain and put it into the drums. Thanks Phil for your words of encouragement and hope. Thank you for writing Cesar! It means a lot to me that you wrote and shared this situation. Trust me....YOU ARE NOT ALONE. I have seen this happen to cats all over the world. So if you can slowly get back in it....with the right reasons in your mind. Enjoying each simple moment, taking your time and developing that love again....You will be fine. @@philmaturanodrums My Tai' Chi Gung teacher often says, "start now, go slow". For me just watching a great drummer play music inspires me 100%, live concerts are great to catch that spark of creativity that even a great CD or DVD can't do!

Embrace simplicity. Be kind to your drumming self. Be humble. That piece of music is in your care for just a moment, then it's gone. Don't beat on it, do not try to bend it to your will by imposing yourself on it. Let it come to you. Your muse will love that.

How did I miss this. I just sent this to many great young college drum grads. Expressing the Commitment to Risk your life’s outcome is TRUTH. When I was in high school & I said I wanted to play drums, everyone thought it was cool. When I was in college and friends bragged to me about their new high paying jobs and why was I still living with my parents. When I left college, many friends asked why wasn’t I married and didn’t have a “real” job. I kept playing. When I became an adult, I briefly questioned my decision to continue playing drums but I was (& still am) hungry to learn and play more. When I started making financial strides, many of those “friends” who initially questioned my decision to play drums were now divorced and in therapy . I eventually married someone who loved music. Our children play drums. My life is simple, play drums everyday, learn or improve something each day & Look for gems of truth like your video. Un Abrazo Brother. Al 🤘🏽😎

My Tai' Chi Gung teacher once related that his Master Bo Yang told him, "Rasaji watch what the world does & do the opposite." Many times we have to do the opposite of what most of our contemporaries are doing in life & in drumming. It's OK to be different & follow your own path!

Okay so about 10 minutes in you said that we shouldn’t do it for money. But what I want is to just make a living off of drumming. Music is the only thing I like. I hate school, I hate 9-5’s, and I hate other people. I just want to be able to make enough to live off of this.
