In central Texas, if you don't have anything but curtains covering your windows, your power bill will be thru the roof in summer with 100+ temps for 4-5 months. And it's a good bet that the curtains won't last long. I have 2 1/2 inch faux wood white blinds but add drapes for softness and accent.

We sold our dream house and moved into our smaller retirement house. Left the countryside and moved to the suburbs for easier and more convenient living. Year one we hired the entire interior of the house painted, put new carpet in all the carpeted areas, replaced the front porch, upgraded the electrical, upgraded the plumbing in the laundry room, replaced window blinds with new blinds (blinds work well for us). New door hardware on all the exterior doors. The house is old but not in a charming way. I still have the cheap wood panel interior doors, I have sheet vinyl in my kitchen and laundry room, my living room has painted over wood paneling, my bathtub/shower are plastic and that works well for me. I was tired of cleaning grout. I added a couple of ceiling fans because I really like to use them. I am a retired interior designer, age 70 and even though my house wouldn't win any awards I have made it my own and we are very comfortable here. The really nice thing is that when we sold the bigger house and moved here we put a big chunk of money in the bank to use in our retirement. Design should fit your life and that changes over time. And as you point out, there are many things you can do to update your house. Choosing which things are important to you is the key.

I thought for a minute (in previous home) we could remove the popcorn ceiling ourselves. My contractor laughed and said, “You can try but I’m going to charge you more to fix the mess and gouges in the ceiling when you’re done”. 😂. I paid him. Worth every penny.

My grandparents home, build in the 50s, has wood paneling. It is not the wood paneling of the 70s. This is actual wood with actual knots, etc. There is no way that I would ever paint over it. It's what gives that house character.

I despise window blinds. So much. Now we do have a 100+ Victorian and even with the new windows those windows get spicy set fire to an ant in the summer. But I hate hate hate them so much.

I live in a fish bowl. I love the mini-blinds! They have versatility with the lighting. They can only let the light in in many different ways as opposed to other shades that are either open or closed.

I'm with you. I still love metal mini-blinds. I like the versatility of them but I also like how the look from the street. I hate those dang plantation blinds and shutters that used to be all the rage. Especially at night, curtains / draperies don't always provide the privacy you need.

I have blinds in the bedrooms and the bathroom on the main floor of my house and guess what? They have the option of being open all the way to expose the entire window. Imagine that. I also have sheer curtains on the bedroom windows to soften the look and a light weight valance over the blinds in the bathroom window to soften that look. In the 'master bedroom' I have vertical blinds on the double window and the single window. They are perfect there. The versatility for privacy and light (and darkening) is great. That also opens to expose the entire window for view and light. They look fine. Versatility is not something I am willing to give up.

Same. I live in a split level and the whole front of my house is windows. I have the wider nicer blinds, but no way am I having that many curtains. I feel like curtains gather so much dust and absorbs smells. The upstairs gets the blasting afternoon sun and I want to be able to quickly adjust what light comes in.

I've never understood why popcorn ceiling is SO hated!? I mean, if i had the choice I would install flat ceilings but it doesn't bother me that our house has it. If it comes down to being more sellable I might take it down then but for now I'm saving my money and living with it.

Eh, I hated the way it darkened the room (so many shadows!), how it was impossible to clean (I’d look up and see spiderwebs snaking through the spikes), and how it would rain material down if bumped. My ceilings are low, so this wasn’t as uncommon as it would be for some. And it had 1-2% asbestos. It also had dark areas on it where the previous owner hadn’t maintained the roof well, and some visible cracks due to poor taping. It’s been wonderful to have the popcorn gone. My parents’ house has popcorn and it isn’t a big deal for them, but they don’t have the cracks or the stains, either, and their ceilings aren’t quite as low. It probably has asbestos and spiderwebs, though.

Same here. Our house is relatively new and isn’t dated in any other way. I definitely wouldn’t choose it, but it definitely isn’t worth the money and mess to remove it. Although I will say that I have seen certain popcorn/textured ceilings that do look old and crusty and gross-but paint would probably fix them.

We have luxury vinyl tile in our kitchen. It's 11 years old and looks literally like it was just installed. And that's with 2 dogs that have destroyed all of the hardwood floors in the rest of our house. If I was building a new house, I would use LVP everywhere.

Brass!!! I just bought a house and it was FULL of 1995 era brass. It was EVERYwhere. Light fixtures, light switches, towel racks, kitchen cabinets' LINING, cabinet pulls... it was everywhere. Removing HALF OF IT has made all the difference in the world.

We ripped out the old carpet and added commercial grade wood grain luxury vinyl flooring in the basement. It’s waterproof and it’s perfect for the basement. The manufacturer said it will outlast all of us.

We've just put it in most of our house too and I'm loving it. I'm the end our deciding factor was the animal planet that is our home, and the way my last exotic hardwood floors were so gouged and damaged when we took them up. Just needed something a little more water and animal proof!!

This! She only showed pictures of extremely cheap, super old and ugly vinyl flooring. Meanwhile, the options for wood grain vinyl are great and easy to install. Had ugly tile floors and putting in real hardwood would have meant a costly ripping out. Vinyl is thinner and can be easily added on top.

I just put Graber 2” white blinds in my beach house. Serves the purpose, clean and sleek…also did LVP by Mannington flooring. Waterproof and wears well. Just perfect for a beach house. Low maintenance and easy to clean up. I do what works for my place and budget.

our house is a 1972 house that looks very Scandi mid century. We have the hollow core wood... but I think those are soooo much more preferable to the current composite white builder grade doors. One thing we did do on one of the doors was to paint it a rich dark brown and put a black European lever handle on it.

Laminated hardwood is used a lot here (WI) in our area. It’s durable and looks really nice. A good one doesn’t look fake.

Totally agree with you. I also live in Wisconsin and in our cray cray seasonal weather, we need floors that will hold up to water, snow, mud, dogs and kids and constantly being washed. I have water resistant vinyl plank tiles in my kitchen/dining area that are open to each other and they look the same now as when I moved into the home 8 years ago when they had been newly installed.

Video idea: Safe designs that don’t date. I’m guessing items like: real wood floors, Mexican tile, real wood walls like your pics. Would you say white or cherry kitchens? We're building our forever house next year and have just been through the choices with that in mind, thankfully I'm not a modern contemporary person so to me a house that doesn't date is items that have been around forever, white profiled doors/cabinets, wainscoting, medium warm toned wood floors, white subway tile. While I'm young at 33 I have a disabled husband and disabled young child so there's no reno in my lifetime or upgrade so I have to get it right the first and only time around

I think everything is out at least some of the time, lots of real wood floors got covered in wall to wall carpet when that was all the rage. Less trendy things hold up better because they have a more neutral basic look, but personally I don't believe anything is truly timeless, they just come in and out of fashion.

I agree with pretty much everything you’ve said! Re: older furniture, I would be more nuanced. I have a couple pieces of antique furniture from my parents’ home and it does work great with my more updated pieces for an eclectic, cozy, lived in and highly individual look. I don’t much like a look using *only* furniture from contemporary furniture stores (RH, CB, Pottery Barn, etc.).

Regarding antique furniture; I‘ve inherited an old Voltaire armchair from my grandfather. It‘s an amazing piece - it was kermit green though! 🤢 So I had it re-upholstered in a zebra pattern (back in 2003 way before zebra was in, haha). It‘s fabulous!!

Lol on the blinds. We live in AZ, we need something to let some light in but not all the light. I had to put some on my office window. I had Roman shades, but they weren’t practical. I need some light to work in but don’t need my neighbor staring at me for 8 hours a day. We also have them on the back of the house so when the landscapers and pool guys are in the back yard they can’t see all that we have going on in the home.

Miniblinds: if you have windows on the ground floor where anyone can walk up and look in (like the living room by the front door), it's hard to find a solution that keeps people from looking in but let's the sun in. Sheers that let the sun in often also let people see in.

I agree. Mini blinds still has it’s purpose where you cannot consider roller blinds, roman blinds or sheer curtains. You can tilt it to get daylight but still ensure privacy.

We had a neighbor who would LOOK INTO OUR PATIO DOOR LOOKING FOR ME.... not kidding. We put Gila window film on our patio doors and front windows. (The privacy reflective one) Problem solved. The light can come in, you can see out, but noone can see in during the day -however, at night, you can see in if the lights are on, but windows are covered at night. I love this stuff. It's somewhat challenging to get the backing pulled away from the film, and patio sized windows you need a helper if possible. It cuts the heat that pours into your home drastically but not the light. We've had it up for years with no issues.

I built a new home in a subdivision. The houses ate close together with no trees so i love my 2" white blinds. I like the privacy. And tilting them changes the color in the room. I did put vinyl white floors in my bathrooms, and they work. Ceramic tile seems to date itself quickly. And I hated tthe grout. I also put a imitation oak vinyl floor in the basement, worked well with a dog. The vinyl plank flooring seems to be holding up. No scratches from the dog. My wood floor in the last house was so scratched up. I would prefer a lighter color than what I picked out in this house.

We do some changes every year. I always see something we can make more beautiful, by renovating or just buying a new. It's an ongoing process. We donate or sell the things we don't want/ need. When I see the dated homes you show, it makes me feel a bit sick. I can't imagine living in one I hate. Even with small changes like paint, and second hand things, you can make the home beautiful. Having a home you love makes you feel so much better than living in something you feel is ugly. So even if it is "just things" I find it very important for the well being. Love your home and channel!

We scraped our ceiling this month before doing the floor. It’s not hard! But we just knocked down the texture and didn’t completely wet it. Still looks drastically better and it went pretty fast! But it leaves a layer of dust on absolutely everything even if you cover it up

Can’t keep up with all the trends unless you have lots of money. Sometimes you have to live in it, especially now with the inflation. I hate those metal blinds too. I did plantation shutters in my new house but they cost tens of thousands of dollars. I won’t be replacing them….ever.

Getting rid of a popcorn ceiling was easy for me. It usually is on plaster board opposed to Sheetrock. Scraping plaster board is much easier than scraping sheet rock. BEWARE, though, that it usually contains asbestos, so definitely spray it with water first and as you go. So many great tips, thank you so much!

My house was built in 1989, so not old, BUT I love the look of an old cottage like home. I’ve decorated with that vibe, mixed with modern pieces. I don’t know what style it is, but I like it, lol. Anyway, we have these huge bay windows in our two front rooms and there is no way I’m putting blinds on them. I hung curtains so if we want privacy at night we can close them. Plus I feel like having curtains gives a finished look to a room, I can’t really explain why. If I bought blinds I feel like it would be a waste of money because we honestly wouldn’t close them ever. They had these weird sheers on them when we moved in that were blue and pink (yuck). The kitchen and bathrooms in the house need serious help though. Very 90s down to the shell shaped sinks. I’m saving my money and I’m very excited to see what it can become. We have paneled wood doors that are pine I believe? They are stained a dark color and they are in really good shape so we’re going to change the hardware and freshen up the stain with some oil or something. We’re also doing little things like changing light switches, changing out air vents. Changing small things makes a difference.

My husband and I purchased a 50's home and because we don't care for 50's decor, we have filled it with antiques from the 20's. So, we have also changed out the doors, window coverings and light fixtures, paint and kitchen, everything but the floor. It looks like a nearly new vintage house inside and out. We love it. I think when we use the word “old” we actually mean dated or the house stopped evolving. When you walk into a house and know exactly when it was built (within the last 70 years) it looks dated or old. Someone could argue that we’ve been slowly conditioned to consume faster instead of adding to what already exists.

I’m curious if 2” wood blinds fall into your mini blind category? I really like mine… they offer privacy to the bedrooms and front of the house, are easy to open and close, filter in the light and views, and look like a shutter from the outside but don’t take up as much space on the inside. The back of my house is blind free and I love it, but I don’t need privacy to the back.

I love your videos …… I built a new cottage with a cathedral ceiling which I love. So far I’m really enjoying the tough, cushioned effect of thick vinyl wood look planks in my lounge room. I have tile in the bathroom, laundry and around the wood burning stove. I chose the closest colour to ‘dirt’ I could find for all flooring and so far it’s going great!

I did a brass delete on my home when I purchased it 4 years ago. Bathroom faucets, towel racks, all the hinges and handles on the doors. Even the fans had brass trim and they came down. It looks so much better! I also paid someone to come in and take down the popcorn ceiling and lots of floral wallpaper too. It cost $10,000. It is expensive! I also replaced the flat panel doors with raised panel doors and the flat panel closet doors with mirrored doors, with white frames. I agree with everything you said in this video.

I always love your tips and decor style. I watch you all of the time. But I just can't part with blinds. We are moving into a new construction soon. I tried to picture only using curtains to survive the privacy issues along with the uncontrolled sunshine. That adds unwanted heat, excessive light to fade materials in the house, and the view of dirty glass window panels (our windows are pretty big). So we are going with 2 and 1/2 inch white faux wood blinds on all our windows "again". And use some curtain panels, as needed to add decor elements to some rooms. I think the idea of using curtains to shut out light and use for privacy is too high maintenance for our household.

Always love your tips to improve my home, it’s just the little things for me in making a difference to my already lovely home, I think as a home owner you really never stop making improvements as time goes by, even for us who not long ago renovated our home and now I’m making just a few small changes that I probably should of done in the beginning, I love to decorate our home but have to be strategic with it Lol 😂 and make the changes when my hubby is away working, that way it’s already done and he probably won’t even notice Lol 😂, I’m wanting to change out a fan light to just a nice light for our small little sitting area, we never use this space in our home so why have a fan light there when we have our home fully air conditioned for both summer and winter months, I’ve already spoken to our electrician to do the job once Hubby goes back to working away 😂, it will be done before he gets back home 🏡….Shhhhh don’t tell him 😅. I had those honey oak hollow flat panel doors.....that trend went well into the 90's and aughts, lol. Doors are expensive for sure! We painted them white, installed new hardware and trimmed them out so they looked similar to our shaker-style kitchen cabinets. A huge improvement visually.

question about vinyl flooring: What about "luxury vinyl flooring" that looks like wood? New homes in our area are putting them in (my friend just moved in to a brand new home less than a month ago) and even an architect put them in his modern home which made it in a local parade of homes?. Thoughts?

I have the same question. Upscale homes, restaurants, doctors offices, etc., all seem to be installing LVP flooring. The only reason I can think of that a contractor would tell you not to install them would be that they (contractor) doesn’t make as much money on the install as they would on other types of floors….maybe?

I love my white mini blinds, because a little one curtains can sometimes imagine them to be vines & no child needs to swing from them like they saw in a Saturday morning cartoon. Lol. As for brass, nope. I like stainless, brushed nickel or matte black for everything. I'm not big on shiny finishes unless my hardwood floors. You have to try hot Carmel apple cider with a sprinkle of cinnamon or cinnamon sticks. Best winter drink.

Louis is hilarious! Boy did you nail it with this one!! My biggest pet peeves on your list are brass, faux wood paneling, heavy drapes and vinyl. Saw wayyyyy too much brass in the 1970s. Suddenly there was that cheap shiny gold stuff EVERYWHERE. It has been 50 years and I am still not over it. And you are right that faux wood paneling MUST be ripped out. You can tell when it has even painted over. Just bite the bullet and tear it down.

We bought our house 20 years ago, built in 1960. Updated over the years. It came with solid wood, beveled interior doors everywhere. We have replaced flooring, repainted, new mechanicals, windows, updated baths and kitchen, but the doors are gorgeous.

Agree with everything except “old” furniture. Most seasoned interior designers will incorporate vintage pieces. Some of the most iconic furniture is form the Mid Century. Eames, Kagan, Noguchi, Knoll, Baughman… I could go on and on. There are also amazing Art Deco pieces. A home with everything new has no soul.

I would add: not only cheap wood paneling but also cheap, dark-stained trim and doors. I had mine painted white and it made such a difference. In a previous house I did paint the wood paneling and it was fine. It was knotty pine- not the flat 4x8 panels, but actual wood with some significant dimension to it. and I used KILZ to cover the knots, and I filled holes and cracks before painting. It was great- the dimension and shadows added interest. I agree about heavy drapes and valances- I agree and replaced with lighter curtains hung wide so that when open they do not cover the windows at all. Such a difference.

We bought a 75 year old house just under a year ago and I swear, every room was a different time period. We had 70's, 80's, 90's and some weird "looks like it belongs in a Star Trek episode" attempt. The only thing with doors is, you'll have to pay someone to fit them into your door trim cause in old houses, they're not standard. I had to do that with my old house

I will have to disagree a bit on the wood paneling in mcm home. There was an over use to be sure but eliminating all traces of original style and materials is what gets you into that you house is constantly chasing a trend and will become outdated. It’s honoring the best of what your home’s authentic envelope is as you make it your own!

Yeah on thee “acoustic ceilings”. It was meant originally used to keep the sound on the room quieter. Over the years they were renamed to popcorn and the purpose was lost. Unfortunately before a certain year the ceilings had asbestos in them.

As Valentina commented quality real wood paneling is fine. It’s that cheap thin fake wood type,that was never installed in quality homes even when it was widely used, that must go. Great video👍🏻
