Flew a 172M in 1978. A very very nice aircraft to go anywhere in. They were fun doing Rock a By Babies in, causing your rear passenger friends to turn green. You are right about the fuel too. You could go a long way on a full tank depending on flight plan. This is a great video with lots of correct info and nice scenery. Thanks for sharing what I can't do anymore. I really miss it.

Gillespie Field in El Cajon, California is my home airport. That is the town that I grew up in. In fact, my grade school from kindergarten to sixth grade, is just East of the runway and we could see it from my school. I no longer live in California but will always have fond memories of that airport. An Uncle of mine used to have an airplane that was kept there. In the late 70’s or early 80’s, a teenage student pilot stole his plane and wanted to take his parents and maybe a sibling to I think it was Las Vegas. The kid lied to his parents and led them to believe that he had permission to use the plane and was also, able to legally solo the plane as well. He wasn’t and crashed shortly after take off, killing everyone aboard the plane, including himself. He crashed into a furniture store but it was fortunately closed at the time and there was nobody inside of it. I just found it. It happened in late December 1980 or New Years Day of 1981. Here is a link to the story. cdnc.ucr.edu/?a=d&d=DS19810102.2.31&e=-------en--20--1--txt-txIN--------1

Cessna/Textron, needs to face lift the high wing, single piston series of aircraft! Would be easy to make a few modern upgrades to the 177 by utilizing composites here and there to get useful load up/reduce drag...include a full fadec diesel option, a 180-H.P. and 200-H.P. power-plant and replace the old 172! Note: the horizontal stabilizer issue has already been addressed with slats. Get it done Textron! 🙏🇺🇲💪

Does the 180hp motor increase or deplete the payload of a standard 172?

There are different STC's for 180hp hp upgrade. 'Air Plains' STC has a gross weight increase of 200-250lbs depending on the model.

The 172N's were the best ones. They produced the most 172s in N version. The plane has a crappy antique panel with an ipad glued to it. Better to have spent the STOL and electronic ignition cash on a better panel. I am also suspicious about electronic ignitions. Nothing is more reliable than mags. The only thing that fails your mags is several applications of a ball peen hammer.
@aerolife16464 жыл бұрын
Anything with moving parts is less reliable than electronic or solid-state versions. All other types of modern engines use electronic ignitions like your vehicle. The aircraft industry is behind on this and beginning to caching up.

My idea of a better 172 , many call it a 182 or the Piper equivalent. Why try to beat a few knots out of an obsolete design.
@aerolife16463 жыл бұрын
The 172 is not an obsolete design. It is the most produced plane in the world and still in production with a similar airframe. The 182 is a good plane in its own way.

Not to be a “know it all” here but I’m pretty sure Diamond’s DA40 is the safest aircraft ever built to date. I flew both aircraft when I was training for my private and the DA40 is much easier to fly, more forgiving, handles better, flies smoother, and has more safety features built in to the structure of the aircraft.
@aerolife16464 жыл бұрын
DA40 is a nice plane. What is safer? Not to start an argument but considering the facts, 172 are inherently resistant to spins. Even if you put it into a spin intentionally it recovers by itself. That is a rare characteristic for a plane. 172 has better slow flight characteristics and lower stall speeds than DA40 as well.
