We have found it better to look at one state at a time because you drive less and more things closer together. A coastal lap of Australia is a lot of long driving burning up resources. Just spend 2-3 months in each state come home then at some time later go out again to another state.

@@fivedownunder It does not even have to be 2-3 months and remember that you have your whole life to see Australia and small bites means you will stay refreshed and not burn out and also have some home life to rest. 🙂

We also do one state a year, it’s the best way to fully see everything, and then we come home again for the summer months to spend with the kids and grandkids 😊

Thanks guys, great anecdotes to ponder. I work on the road so I need 3-4 days in one spot. Often, I only move 200-300Km from camp to camp, cutting down on fuel bills. I started out with a big system of 3 x 300Ah Lithiums, 800W of rooftop solar, a 2300W inverter, 200W and 150W blankets. Rooftop solar charges at 50A and DC-DC at 40A. I replaced my petrol genset with an iTech 2000P - 2000W inverter and 160Ah Lithium. It can 240V charge in the tunnel boot while driving. Looking forward to 2024!

That sounds like a wicked set up! 🤙 That's key isn't it... keeping those fuel bills low! 😁 Love it Stuart!

Hey guys, probably been watching your gang travel Aus for about a year now, my wife and I are loving every episode! Hoping to start our big trip Jan 2025. I have a question about your battery system, because we are worried ours isn't going to last long enough now (300w solar, 240ah AGM battery, 200ah portable panel). We haven't had a chance to take our van properly off grid yet to see how it goes. But are you guys running your fridge from your battery system as well? We have a 3 way fridge so we just run on gas when parked up, and are hoping because of this that our system will last a reasonable amount of time. Thanks for the great tips and gorgeous views across Aus - keep having a ball!

If you're only running your lights off that system you'll be fine, if you start running an invertor to run your 240 appliances, then it might not be enough. Our fridge is 3 way, so gas when we are off grid. Thankyou for following along our travels 🤙😍

Interesting and valid points that you guys make we just completed a lap a lot quicker than what you did but as we spend a few months each year exploring different states we didnt really need to revisit a lot of places on this trip. Totally agree with you caravan parks and fuel are the 2 most expensive parts of being on the road, what you spend on attractions is discretionary. You can reduce fuel costs by travelling at a sensible speed and tryiing to avoid travelling on days with strong headwinds but we tend to spread it out a bit by staying in one place longer which is important if you are working on a monthly budget., In terms of food the way we look at it is that we would be spending money on food at home so providing we dont eat out all the time and we stock up in supermarkets when in bigger towns we can live reasonably well without going broke. One thing we have found is the social life has changed to what it was prior to covid people dont seem to want to socialise as much as they used to. A lot of times they arrive, set up and disappear inside never to be seen again. I have the feeling that before covid there was a lot more social activity going on like happy hours and travellers were more likely to interact with each other. Maybe its just us as nowadays being grey nomads, we dont have pets or kids which often initiates conversations with people that have a common interest . We had this current van built with 400W of solar, 200AH of lithium, 3000w inverter, DC tio DC charger and set up with clearance, suspension etc, to allow us access to free camp areas that we probably wouldnt have taken our previos van. We still find ourselves staying too often in caravan parks and we really need to change that not only to save money but people in free camps tend to be friendlier. We also had our van weighed by a mobile weighing service before we left home they showed us how to rebalance our load properly its probably the best investment that we have made just for the piece of mind knowing where we are with weights.

Amazing points you have made! Very similar views... on our next lap we will definitely be slowing down and saving money that way, moving fast is a recipe for using up more money 😅 We also like to fill up when at major supermarkets and then only top up when more rural to save a little bit of money as it can be quite drastically more expensive can't it. I love to hear that you love to free camp and yes sometimes it's more of a convenience to stay at a caravan park, we got stuck in that cycle on our first lap, for us as a family it's stupidly expensive so we will be doing less of that on the next lap 😁 We totally agree with you that getting it professionally weighed was the best thing! Great investment, for safety and for knowledge too 😁 Thankyou 😁😍

@@fivedownunder Enjoy your time on the road the more you do it the more you find ways to do it a little better. We will be leaving from our home in Lake Macquarie in Feb heading for the Eyre Peninsular, the red centre then back into outback Qld via the 3 ways. Although I can imagine how busy kids keep you guys it a life experience that as a family you will never forget - stay safe.

cost - its usually a dollar a km to travel outback Oz. I went around Australia for about $6K using a tent. did lots of tours. had lots of repairs also (tip: always go the long way if its bitumen)

Wow so accurate 🤙 after our 4 month Reccy we averaged 1500 a week. In hindsight if we did more low cost / free camping we could have reduced that heaps…. Awsome ep guys 🤙🍻
