My takeaway is that all these tracks already sounded really good and wide. That seems to be the actual battle. I would have felt good about the width before any of these techniques.

Thank you for the great content as always! 23:52 yes, this is something big I’ve noticed: putting situation (or a bit crush) before/ after reverb create such a different effects. When I please situation after reverb, it emphasizes the tail. In the way it’s hard to expect if you haven’t done that in the past)

Very good video! Many helpful tips and without any silliness or huff, just straight up great and informative. About the Beatles exercise at the end: this might be why I have a hard time widening my tracks, I mean, the starting of that song just sounds awful to my ears. More or less just sounds as if the right side died unintentionally (and I'm listening in AKG 701:s). It's ok as an intro like that I guess, but way to hard panned imo. Matter of taste I guess. Thanks again!

Subtle and nice changes, but feel fooled as soon as I see u also add gain with that tremolo when u compare A/B. Tremolo is movement, and any small change adds up. so nice. Less is more and make small changes to spice things up.

probably one of those questions when you overthink, but when mixing comes up there is often the tip of mixing in mono, when trying to mix and working on what is covered in this video, should this be done in mono also? Is mixing in mono only useful for the static mix and once the effects start getting added we no longer mix using mono? Either way great video/tips.

Problem that i always have is when I watch the ozone imager vectorscope of my and some pro track, the width is pretty much the same, but when i listen the tracks, on speakers or even better on the headphones, pro tracks are always much much wider, like a lot. Even the drum section is super wide.. That really bugs me.. Any advice.?
@TommyBelval
@TommyBelval Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it is a wierd thing. First, you can compress the sides transients so you control it more and after you push the stereo image. If you see that the sound is super dynamic, it can be wider if compress on the sides. and you can limit the stereo to a maximum correlation value and it will sound wide. Use correlometer and look at all the frequencies and their sides values!
@jorriffhdhtrsegg
@jorriffhdhtrsegg Жыл бұрын
I've noticed the ozone meter is reading different to other ones i have used. I am sure sure what this is because of, but there is a difference between panning a track (its not out of phase with anything) and having 'stereo fx' or mics that have something to be out of phase with. a mono track equals +1, panned full = 0, phase flipped one channel (i.e. sides) = -1...in theory. It seems to be something to do with this difference. Try melda stereoscope.

Clever mid-side sound design/processing/editing, and phase-manipulation of channels. Knife Party were making wider & louder EDM than anyone, already in 2012. You can listen to their stuff with center-channel muted on the master, and it's not long reverbs and panning that you'll hear. Bob Katz talks about stereo-image in his book, also 10 years ago. Noisia showed on a video how they envelope mid, and side of drums separately etc. This topic keeps looping around, because people who know rarely share, or don't get the visibility.

when you a/b tracks please try not to talk in between. write off and on on the screen and just flip between them. it'll help us pick up on the difference much easier. Thanks.

You can get away with it if it's a sound which doesn't need to be prominent in your mono mix but which adds some depth and interest to your stereo mix. As always, do a mono check so you can determine exactly where you want that sound landing in your mono mix.

I think getting wide mixes is pretty easy. Throw stuff all around the room and you will get quite a wide mix already, just by having a very little amount of sounds centered. And you can get crazy too if you want.

Some interesting but also controversial information (widening under 100Hz for example). But the talking in the A-B comparisons makes them almost useless to follow. At one point there is a big fat ON and OFF on the screen and in the moment where we have to get a subtle change you say „here is ON“, „here is OFF“. That’s a no go!
