I am not very flexible (I began Kyokushin Karate at 48 in January of 2019 with no prior martial art training), so I have a hard time with kicks like the Mawashi Geri and the Yoko Geri (I cannot kick higher than the waist of an opponent of my height.) However, I'm able to hit up to the shoulders using Soto Mawashi Geri and Uchi Mawashi Geri kicks. Those kicks are useful to break your opponent's guard, then to quickly hit with a Mae Geri, or an arm strike (fist or elbow).

Number 9 also looks like a Judo sweep: Kouchi Gari (Inside Minor Reap). That would be a nice one for you to look into as well. I actually did both a couple years of Judo (when I was in Elementary School) and a couple years of Capoeira (in my early 20's) and Judo made me feel more comfortable in taking risks and not be afraid of getting in the pocket when training/sparing Capoeira, as that was Judo throwing range. I never used Judo in Capoeira sparring, but I often thought "I could use this Judo technique here or there". Speaking of Capoeira sparring, I went to two different schools of it (and one guy told me about a third one); they had very different aproaches to intensity. Actually, "intensity" isn't the best word. There was the so called "fitting game", where you tried to fit your moves into the other's moves gracefully, just like a dance; and then there was the so called "malice game", where you tried to trick your partner into thinking you were going to fit in something one way, but actually did something different, trying to clip them. In the first school I went to, we did both fitting and malice (it wasn't the instructor who called it, we did, on the spot), but we pulled back on the strike. On the second one, we only did fitting (boring, but the instructor never told me off when I did a little malice, so... :D ). The other guy (who I'd met in the first school) told me of a school where they actually went hard on the hits, and tried to hurt each other. If you want to try Capoeira, look at one of their "Rodas" (circle inside which they do their sparring) beforehand, to get an idea of what they're about.

I agree with your definition of inside vs outside. I have had karate instructors say inside starts on the inside and Kung Fu instructors say inside ends on the inside. I look at what part of my foot is connecting with the target, outside crescent hits with the outside of the foot and vise versa

The crescent kick is one that I trained regularly yet rarely ever had a chance to use, I have landed it exactly one time, fought a guy with an exceptionally wide boxing stance. I disguise it as a low roundhouse and snap the hip back at the last second much like Seth shows, caught him right on the point of the chin, not one of my knockouts but it did leave him stunned and more then a little confused as to what exactly just hit him.
@marklaughlin12903 жыл бұрын
Sensei Seth, @3:28 the "Hatchet Kick". I teach that kick too but call it a front leg skip ax kick. If you add a little skip forward as you do it, you can start the kick from further away, knock away their defensive hands and follow-up with a job/cross/elbow/etc. It helps you to gain a lot of distance, really quickly. Just my 2-cents. :-)

I love crescent kicks I think they are underrated, I like to fake the outward one with my front leg deliberately coming up a bit short and then wind up with a rear leg turning kick off the back leg as they look to close the distance. I'm not as keen on the inward crescent kick though.

I have always loved crescent kicks. And im glad i have always specilized in this kick, because post injury (and with age) my hips struggle with high side kicks and round houses. But front kicks and cresent kicks are more anatomically favorable to our natural range of motion. Its easier maintain flexibility in this direction because its the knee and toes point in the natural direction they do for walk-in and running. I hope i explained well. But yeh i can only do mid side kicks, and round kicks now.

I also love that reverse roundhouse where you swing to inside like a regular roundhouse but switch to the opposite direction. I used to hey my friend with that all the time in sparring, cuz I'd also switch which leg. And sometimes to opposite order. Going outside change to inside. Also love the Booker t shout out. And at 5:55, its literally a move in TKD Poomsae (forms, basically TKD version of Kata). And when I first time tried this one while practising forms, my kick had enough momentum to give a strong jerk to my arm and hurt my elbow, lol. Not disrespecting or comparing any other martial arts, just wanna say the point that sometimes TKD is really slept on. May be because of the point sparring.

In taekwondo honestly in my class we use the Cresent kick as more of a way to set up spinning kicks or to back up the opponent to open them for another kick. Not so much as a real knockout or striking technique. Although you can land them in close if you are good at them. The outside Cresent tends to have more power and hits with the blade. It can land hard if they are just wide open for it at that moment. Or even as a sorta reverse roundhouse to the ribs.
@The31st4 жыл бұрын
I’d say there’s a difference between that inside to out crescent kick and a twist/swivel kick (tkd vocab) where the crescent kick is hitting with outside of the foot, the blade, footsword bit and you’re swinging your leg and keeping your hip square, and the twist kick hits with the top of the foot so you turn your knee outward and snap the kick. That can have some pop on it as is a fun kick to use, the crescent kick is a leg swing

Crescent kicks are good for checking your opponent. If you're about to land one..sure.. turn it into an hatchet kick or what have you, but I think the most devastating use is the crescent kick as a set up for a Muay Thai hook kick/knee. Because you can utilize the momentum from the kick into your second kick whilst your opponent has ideally lost their footing due to avoiding your crescent kick set up.

6:00 that's so weird because in suparenpei kata we hit the hand and spin all the way around. Might wanna take a look at the bunkai. Also I'm gonna get in so much trouble but the way ScOtT aDkInS teaches it and the way is to first lift the knee, twist this hips out and torque back in to throw the kick. Its kinda elusive and confusing, and I like to use them to set up other kicks like roundhouse, question mark or my favorite- turning side-kick(which obviously doesn't work. Also not sure if you've seen it but Jesse-sensei does a super cool tornado cresent. Edit: I made the tornado comment in relation to the initial point mike made

I think one nice thing about the outside to inside crescent is for a shorter fighter to head kick. Icy can head kick seth with it easily. Idk if he can roundhouse him in the head but even if so its easier. Also faster and less telegraphed. And the closer range allows you to mix it with punches.
@mattbugg45684 жыл бұрын
Well these kicks work but with gloves on without hand holds your better off using frount kick round kicks. Reason why is the set up is different. If you just grab the wrist like the first inside crescent kick you showed its very easy to counter. The actual technique is if you grab the wrist and twist it and throw a punch over it so the opponents arm is twisted forearm up, then you bring your punching hand down on the elbow joint so that there structure starts to collapse. There opposite hand would be in guard and you take that arm and bring it up grab the opposite wrist start turning it over and bring your opposite arm forearm down into there elbow and throw a inward crescent into the back of the head. Or when you switch sides you raise the arm and start to turn the wrist over and stretch them out with roll back or a stretched out arm bar you then apply outward Cresent kick to the back of the head. So the set up of being able to turn the forearm of your opponent upward is the actual setup for this kick which in boxing gloves doesn't work. So doing a round kick to the head would be the correct usage because you can cover up your members when the actual hand trap with the forearm up is the cover of the crescent kick. When you do this kick with the arm bridge the correct counter is a upward block and opposite side strike to the members while jamming the opponent. When your stretched out you can't jamb because of the twisted arm you have to move the direction to undo the twisted arm not against it.

That kick is just less powerful than a regular round house because your leg has less room for charge up from this motion. But if you do a shorter version of a aroundhouse (mawashi) they become the same thing anyway.

So should I chamber a Crescent from a front kick chamber or a roundhouse chamber? Or just not chamber at all?
@jaxonroberts82803 жыл бұрын
I feel like this my answer for the roundhouse kick. I'm pigeon toed so my hip sockets are screwed up and I dont have the best mobility. I can do this pretty well at least. Do you have any other suggestions for techniques for people with limited hip mobility?

Don't you think lateral pressure against the knee joint could be bad?

Sure, but usually I’ve you’re hitting the head it’s not much pressure

I always called it a crescent/axe. I guess maybe I'll call it a hatchet kick from now on.

Hatchet kick is a cool name, huh?

I was always taught the crescent kick is exclusively for disarming a weapon held in an attackers hand, if getting away isn't an immediate option.
@daniel-san8363 жыл бұрын
or if there isn't a chair or something you can grab and use to disarm them with if getting away isn't an option.

I was taught that originally the crescent (inside/outside) were disarming techniques. Kicks to the head were not the original intent, but at some point they began to be head kicks as well. Probably dude to sports competitions where head kicks score high. But they were also used for striking the knees and heels for sweeping techniques.

crescent kicks are bitchslaps done with your foot. With speed they can catch somebody off guard if otherwise to close for proper roundhouse et al. Still pretty dangerous regarding balance. I use front leg crescent kick for advancing opponents. But only in TKD ruleset.
