The side kick is a powerful and versitile linear-strike that is seemingly underutilized in MMA. In this tutorial, Shane shares 7 strategies on how to land the sidekick in sparring, including:
1. As a long-ranged sniper attack
2. Recovering after missing a roundhouse
3. Breaking rhythm with leg kicks

Plus side: Your kicks and slow balance have improved vastly, great to see. Negatives; your range is off in some instances, as you promote the upright torso, and omit to mention that the side kick is damn useful for going to those floater-ribs underneath a straight punch that's aimed at your face (which means you have to lean away from the punch). The common training drill for this close range, fast kick is to stand side-on to the bag with your outstretched hand just touching the bag, as soon as you retract your hand you lean back and kick as fast as possible mid-height.

Thanks for the tips. I've been doing martial arts for 24 years, practicing styles that mostly focus on kicking like TKD, Shao Lin, and Muay Thai. My avatar is literally a picture of my doing a side kick. Yet I was still able to learn something about side kicks from watching this video. That's why I love martial arts. Its a never ending journey.

The side kick is a vastly underrated technique in MMA. It can be both a great defensive and a vicious offensive move. It is much more powerful than a roundhouse and requires less space to throw. It can be used as an effective counter for lots of moves, including a roundhouse kick. I think a lot of TKD/Karate kicks are overlooked. Another good one is the hook kick and its variations. A proper spin hook kick to the temple can drop a man like a limp sack of potatoes and is very sneaky and hard to block. I’m glad to see more fighters realizing the value of these techniques.

Great stuff. I think one reason why you don't see the side kick so much in MMA is because it is harder to pull off than say the roundhouse. But it a good thing to have in the arsenal for all the reasons you've mentioned. I went from a trad karate school to cross train in MMA and got some good mileage out of your first example, the lead jab followed by the side to the body. I am also really fond of your lead-cross then rear side. It's much safer to kick full contact with a side than a front kick when you are barefoot. Got broke toes once from kicking to the body with a front kick.

Points of importance for a more powerful sidekick also. Try and keep your back heel on the floor as much as possible to be more enforced when the kick is landing. Try and twist the hips in also not just the leg extension as it’ll add more speed and just more power. Watch how joe rogan throws a side kick. Make sure the knee is high when chambering, if it’s too low you probably have to over turn your hips to get height and its more like a bad back kick.

I like the standing tall concept is something I haven't though of, but something I like to do and something that has been thought to me is to give it a little of shoulder, so instead of looking with your body straight you are looking over your shoulder when kicking. I feel that it gives more power to the kick wich can very in use I think

Great video, great form. But I disagree about the side kick to the leg not hyperextending the knee. If you hit the quadracept it may or may not, but to the knee it most definitely will. I used it a lot when I bounced in some really bad bars, and it most definitely hyperextend the knee. Also I think there have been "documented" examples in MMA fights.
