#selfsabotage #stopselfsabotage #personaldevelopment 9 ways you're screwing yourself over and might not even know it. Self-sabotage is often the result of subconscious faulty thinking and until we awaken to how we are sabotaging our lives, we repeat what we know, even if what we know is negative.
If you are looking for ways to end self sabotage, becoming aware of how you might be engaging in self sabotaging thinking and behaving is the first step.

My mother was an adult child of an alcoholic and my father was an alcoholic. My mother and I lived with her sober alcoholic father and his angry codependent wife, my grandmother. How do you think I faired? Well, thanks to you and others, I am coming out of the darkness and into the light after 59 years. Better late than never! Thank you for all your hard work. You are saving us.

1. We let our (subconscious) fears do the choosing. 2. We depend on others for our sense of purpose. 3. We use distractions instead of dealing with our stuff. 4. We look to be rescued. 5. We become addicted ourselves (thoughts & others as well as objects & substances). 6. We stuff our emotions. 7. We push people away that challenge us (sign of trauma bond). 8. We lie to ourselves (why should “I” never change). 9. We falsely believe we can FIX OTHERS.

Dating men the same way, my whole life. My mother married someone she thought she could fix, over 50 years ago. She spent my entire lifetime complaining about him, raging, comparing herself to others, and feeling sorry for herself. I think she was jealous of the affection my father had for me. She doesn’t take responsibility for her part to this day. I now realize how much this has impacted my development and my relationships with men, in particular but with female friendships too. she involved herself in my love relationships and sabotaged me when I was below the veil and lived to please her. I’ve worked very hard to understand and change my part of the dance in relationships with men and also friends. I’m Feeling proud of that and am working to forgive myself for the mistakes I’ve made in relationships. You are right, you do manifest healthier people manifest in your life if you do the work on yourself and get healthier. It a silver lining toa very painful and lonely childhood and young adulthood. Enjoy and learn from your videos. Thank you.

This video is so true! I was always the woman set up with men with "problems," because I'm "nice," and can "fix," him. Not anymore! How many times have women heard: "Well, he just needs a good woman to whip him into shape!" Immediately the man's accountability and responsibility is put on the woman's shoulders...and they haven't even met yet. I am raising my son to be self sufficient and respectful. Women are being raised a lot smarter nowadays.

A while ago, for the first time in my life I took criticism from someone I was dating and looked at it objectively. I am proud of myself because it's not that I can't accept criticism. It's that I struggle to accept that I made the mistake that led to the criticism. I'm trying to work on that but in childhood I had to be perfect. I struggle to know sometimes whether my thoughts and feelings are valid.

You have a real knack of explaining everything in such a clear way, so it becomes easy to identify the results of being a co-dependant and understand why we have allowed ourselves to be trapped in the self sabotaging situations we have unwittingly entered into. Your unfailing commitment to your work has enabled so many of us who wouldn’t normally have had the chance, to break free from self destructive relationships. My parents were older than most. They were both born in the EARLY 20th century. My mother raised me to believe that when a man came into my life or if I had the opportunity to have nice date, EVERYTHING was to go on the back burner. I was told that my friends would all understand if I canceled plans with them at the last minute when a man was in the picture. So much so, that when I explained this to my boss, after having a late night date and needing the time off, she flipped out and I was left feeling completely confused. I was only 20 but God only knows how utterly screwed up I was trying to navigate the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. She did the best she could with what she had. Forgiveness can be a lifelong process. 😳🌺 Thank you, Lisa! Thank you for all your sound wisdom. Late in life for me as it is, these are still extremely valuable truths; those that I want to embrace for the rest if my life. I am very very grateful. 🥰

I manifested my ex husband and first major narcissistic relationship (outside of my mother) at the age of 11. He was the uncle of my then best friend and absolutely gorgeous. I remember telling my friend I'm going to marry your uncle when I grow up. Sure enough I married him at age 22. He was 35. An alcoholic. Drug addict. Extremely physically and verbally abusive. Cheated on me constantly, etc.. when he was nice he was very very nice and when he was mean he was a monster. I'm 51 and been divorced for 16 years. I'm still recovering from my mom, him and a slew of narcissistic relationship in between ranging from family members to casual acquaintances. Sometimes it feels I'll never escape the effects, tho I know I will because I feel my purpose is connected to the experiences I've lived thru. I appreciate your willingness to help us heal from these experience. You're a blessing 🌹

Thank you for another banger, Lisa! I was definitely taught it was bad to express “negative” emotions, i.e. anything narcMom doesn’t want to hear. I’m in my 40’s now, and i don’t know if it’s because i’m getting over the flu& am too tired to care, but yesterday i did something small and simple that felt very freeing, maybe other commenters can relate? In the checkout line at grocery the worker kid said, “and how are you doing today?” And i bravely pushed all my midwestern conditioning aside and instead of my standard “pretty good, how bout you?”i felt like speaking true, so i replied “NOT good”. He looked up surprised to say the least 😂we both paused, then we giggled. It was a pretty fun and harmless little baby step, like for anybody who maybe wants to practice voicing their truth in a low-stakes setting. And the kid was very nice! He gave me my change and said “well i hope whatever’s not good goes better for you soon”. So thank you for all the hard work you put into all your videos, Lisa you are a Gem. The comments section helps me a lot, too. Hope this comment helps someone else! 💕🍻🤗🌈✈️

Dear Lisa, you are amazing, I learned so much from you and I keep on learning.... I am wondering: could you maybe make a video about as a codependent always wanting to talk about her feelings and thoughts to her loved ones? Maybe because she thinks she needs them to process the thought, or she feels the need to be understood, of for another reason? The loved ones can be are so bothered by this and I do not know what to do to stop! Much love!
@vocals7693
@vocals7693 3 жыл бұрын
Brilliant insight Lisa! You hit the nail on the head on so many levels. Arguing to stress a point is about as useful as trying to sway someones religious beliefs, unless as you said, they're open minded and have the ability to appreciate other points of view, but that's rare. Another thing that is rare is the ability to be able to cchabitate in a new relationship after 40. So many are preconditioned by negative input from their past that they shut the door on their future. It's a subconscious defense mechanism to keep people away no matter how nice they are or what value you hold in their life. It doesn't matter to them. So when you speak of the subconscious it resonated because people don't have the ability to step outside themselves to see how they are and how they behave towards others and therefore are unable to recognize and fix it. I myself can't find my way out of the neverending relationship hole. I'm a lead rock singer in bars and I have a bad habit of going with the first woman who shows interest and it's never worked out, because like you said, some people are rescuers and problem solvers. That's me. Here I am thinking I'm going to be the night in shining armor to save them from their past, but every time I fail. I feel like I'm running on a treadmill to nowhere and it's ruining my life. I'm as emotionally drained as the ones I'm trying to fix by being the 'nice guy'.

My soon to be ex-husband always told me that he wanted to divorce me every time he would become angry with me but then when he would come down the next day, he would tell me that he loved me. He did this for 35 years and would also give me a heads up to what his intentions were. When my oldest daughter moved out of the house, then he would tell me..."when we get divorced, I only have to give you child support for two". Then when my middle daughter moved out then he would say the same words again..."now that our middle daughter is gone." "I only have to give you child support for our smallest daughter". He had played this pattern for 35 years that when I told him that I was done with our marriage. Then he cried crocodile tears. You are so right about my narcissistic abuser soon to be ex-husband was pretending to love me but he didn't truly love. Your advice is so helpful and is going to help me heal my soul.

thanks for your heart. i am glad you saw my comment. such terribly hard won knowledge isn't it? i am 60 and these issues have utterly blighted my life. i am at the point of despair now finding myself utterly rootless. i have no homeland (it was pathologically toxic (racist)), no society nor community (i cut away from that, from my colonial origin, and from it's original source (england), no family of origin left because of their toxicity nor family of my own having been maliciously abused by my ex. all related issues i have truly struggled to comprehend, but this place it leaves me in ... now in a new country i have found to be so unwelcoming contrary to all expectation (sweden) ... it is truly devastating. what hope can i now have? can you see any? can you help me? kindly mentorship? i really need it. 🙏

I have watched so many of your videos Lisa the last few years which have been a great help. I have watched certain videos over and over, I just cannot seem to get the information stick in my head for longer than about an hour after watching! I know the theory how to get over codepdendacy, but boy puting it into practice feels so hard. Never going to give up. Thankyou.

What a powerful message, Lisa! Your insight allows me to assess my situation through a secondary thought process. One that aligns with my default understanding yet one that allows me to stop and process new thought patterns and healthier awareness. I hope that made sense. The other day I was reflecting on self love. If we can harness a love for ourselves, at a level matching our love for another human being. We will then be free of seeking validation. We will love ourself enough to walk away from an abusive individual without falling into depression. Does your love for your partner match the love you have for yourself? I

When a person is in need of help and support especially if the person's health is declining and I am in that inner circle giving the person their basic needs.I noticed alot of openings for other people to help and what I experienced was helping with complaining,in denial,had to work (but they had vacation pay), friends are with their significant others, medical team hiding in the shadows about certain topics brought up. So unfortunately and it's unfortunate that grown adults have to show their distain even more when I was there. They just hated the Jesus in me and was blinded by the light only to go back to there routines hopefully with conviction of how rude they all were

Wow. I just want to say, I love watching your videos. They give me so much hope! I am an aspiring psychologist & this is giving me so much insight. I’m not even half way through this video but I just had to leave a comment. The jaw dropping moment when you say you’re driving & reciting license plates. That’s something that I do so often, it’s bad. I didn’t realize it was a emotional mental thing 😪 thank you Ms. Lisa Romano. I appreciate you more than you’ll know.

In my case it was completely different as it comes about friends. While I saw red flags and wondering, my so-called friend said; oh no, you are sensitive, he is probably ok. When he did the horrible mess of my life and I finally cut him off and was in state of shock, she was like; - oh he wasn't that bad, maybe if you should have been different. ... and later, oh come on, get it over with, turn the page (in the moment I just discovered connection; my narc mother, couple of narc exes..) . Well, she is the ex friend with the reason.

One of the reasons I chose my second boyfriend was because my first boyfriend had cheated on me. I was subconsciously thinking that the 2nd one could never cheat on me because he was ugly and uncharismatic. Turns out that he was a covert narcissist who used his nonthreatening facade to lure in and abuse women.
