I had an '89 Pontiac Grand Am with the Quad-4 engine. You misspoke in stating the 442 had a V6. It had Old's designed (and GM's first twin-cam multivalve) four cylinder engine. Also, I had and loved my 1990 Capri XR2. IT was a blast to drive and many asked, "What IS that?" Lastly, choosing a VW Fox two-door wagon over a sedan to show would have been a better choice. And it was a Brazilian VW, not from Germany.

Best reason to have a VW Fox wagon was the ability to throw a few blankets in the back and get it on with the girlfriend. Guy I knew had one and that's exactly what he did with it.

@@catjudo1 Hah! I like them because they are two-door wagons and the engine is longitudinal. And they are rare. I drive an almost as rare wagon, a 2005 Volvo V50 T5 Sport with the six-speed manual tramsmission. And the one time, as a teen, we tried to "do it in the car" (a 1964 Chevy Impala), the cops showed up, knocked on the fogged window with a nightstick and then laughed at our response.

My husband bought a 1992 Mercury Capri in 2004 for $1000. $1000 for a 12yo running vehicle from a dealer. We took it to Fun Ford Weekend, entering it into the car show, and no one knew what it was. It has to be a Ford, and people weren’t sure until we told them it was a mercury. Over hearing random spectators, one guy thought it was a fiesta, and another thought it was a festiva. It won a random “class award.” “Best Import” went to a fox body mustang, which wasn’t even imported. The Mercury however was literally made in Australia using Japanese parts.

Many share your opinion. The VW Fox was a model based on the Passat B1 platform (from 1973) - so an already sort of old-fashioned design when introduced in the US (1987). Still it had great realiability and more than fair quality. The video also states that it brought up a cheap image for VW of America. That is not precise as consumers could pick up much more luxurious german VWs if wanted - other then the rather humble brazilian Fox. Cheers from Brazil. 🙂

The Acura Legend certainly applies. Honda was the top of the import luxury brand heap with those came out, but when they killed the car and the Integra, Honda essentially put the brand on life support. I'd also argue that the Chevrolet Caprice and the Ford Crown Victoria were popular too, and not just with cops. I drove a Caprice most days when I worked for the cab company and for such a large car, that thing would move and it would handle too. Always wanted one ever since.
