I know. This was around the time where I was watching Nickelodeon and SNICK all of the time and these commercials feel recent.

Super Mario Kart started as an experiment to see if a 2 player F-Zero would work. The developers were having a hard time getting a good idea together. Eventually, they settled on go karts, which were smaller than the futuristic hover cars of F-Zero. The Mario cast was added, and what started as a simple tech demo grew into its own franchise.

Fruity Pebbles- I owned that Comic Book that came on the cereal box that was featured in this commercial. The plot of the comic that was contained in the book, as I remember, was that Fred and Barney get transported into a video game and they use the Fruity Pebbles cereal to overcome various obstacles to complete levels to reach the door that would lead them out of the video game. When it looked like the final door couldn’t be opened with a key, they accidentally discovered that they could simply push the door open and they get out of the video game. Wilma buys Fred a new box of Fruity Pebbles, Barney steals it and Fred chases him, ending the story.

04:07 - It’s crazy to think I was around when Nickelodeon used to air all sorts of cartoons like Yogi Bear, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Underdog and Muppet Babies! They would continue for a while with others like Heathcliff and Inspector Gadget before going full NickToons! It was honestly really great!!

11:31 - The original Nicktoons block was a big deal at the time, as they were all creator driven. After animation in the 80s being dominated by half hour toy commercials and corporate greed, the early 90s really was a big time for creative success in TV animation, and Nickelodeon rode the wave.

It originates from Japan and was localized here, and seems to have played in heavy rotation during the summer of ‘93.
