Will it still make ice cream?
Restoration of a very old White Mountain Freezer hand-cranked ice cream maker.
White Mountain has been making ice cream makers since 1853. This style was patented in 1923 and this particular machine was made sometime in the 20s or 30s. The mechanisms are made of cast steel. The bucket is made of New England White Pine and painted with milk paint.
Here is a link that explains milk paint: en.wikipedia.o...
The 4 quart container and the mixers and lid are all tin-plated. The tin has worn in a few places, which is where the rust was coming from, and the whole thing needs to be re-tinned.
This restoration took about 3 weeks. The ice cream only took about 15 minutes of churning.

Oddly enough, One of the 'Christening' gifts to my Grandmother was a White Mountain freezer in 1900. I remember using it in the 60's before cheap 'store bought' Ice Cream was available. Thanks for making this one. When I was a kid my brother and cousins used to get together during the summer for various events and holidays. My uncle had a crank operated ice cream maker and the rule was that everyone had to take a turn or two at turning the handle. He used to say, jokingly, that if you didn’t turn the crank you couldn’t have the ice cream. Learned some life lessons through that process. Also, the crank got harder to turn near the end as I recall. Anyway, thanks for the memories.

White Mountain is the Cadillac of Ice Cream Makers. Cranked on those bad boys for hours when we were kids. Not 100% sure on your dating of 1920's or 30's. From the design and patina I'd put it more in the 50's to 70's, but that takes nothing away from value or all the hard work to restore it. Excellent job!

Thanks for posting this! We had one of these when I was young in the 60's. It was old then. Don't know where my parents got it. I have no idea how many tubs of ice cream we made in that thing. Thought it was so cool that the dasher went one way while the tub went the other. We used it up through the 70's but after I moved out don't know what happened to it. Parents died and brother and I could never find it when going through everything. I remember after it sat during the winter and dried up it would leak water from the wooden seams for a bit the first time we used it in the spring then didn't leak the rest of the year. Wow! That was so long ago!

First, I will say that if this is trollbait, then well played. Second, the word you attempted to type is restoration, which is the process of taking something and returning it to new, or even better than new, condition. The process you are attempting to describe is refurbishing, which is using what is available to make something functional again. This project falls somewhere between those two states, if we're being honest. Renovation is the process of removing something and replacing it with something else, and only applies to large scale projects, usually buildings or significant portions thereof, or other real property. Third, to Acme, sorry for ranting. It was a lovely project to watch, and I very much appreciate you sharing it.

@@lucyxchan6808 three languages is very impressive! English is the only language I actually can claim to truly know, and only really American English. I am woefully ignorant of German, though I do know just enough to pronounce Volkswagen the correct (German) way. :-) thank you for your lovely response, and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Great Job,Excellent craftsman ship. My Aunt and Uncle had one of for years kept patching up and made ice cream. I was very fortunate to find new White Mountain Freezer in the box at a old hardware store. I still have and works prefect. Throw a feed bag over top and have kids sit on it while churning. Quantity made.

"firstly, I admire the painstaking restoration, secondly, young people should watch it more often so that they know that bread does not grow on trees, thirdly, I am surprised how much has been invented in the past for the household, fourthly I improve my English, respect to the master !!!!! !! As a baby boomer when I was a kid this is the only type of ice cream my family ate. Watching this brings back memories and now my shoulder, arm and wrist are starting to ache.

This was a pleasure to watch. Combine an interesting restoration of a familiar and comforting object with nostalgia for those childhood memories of making ice cream. This ticks all the boxes!

OMG, we had one of these in the 50's. Maybe the ice cream tasted better because we worked so hard for it? We visited some relatives in Kansas in the early 60's and they had an electric one...thought that was so cool.

I grew up with an electric one as well. We were spoiled; this hand cranked one is some work!

You can't get those types of Ice Cream makers any more. An even if you only restore it to sit on your shelf (which I doubt) we had one growing up. About the same year. Mom an Dad would always set it up the older Children were in charge of keeping it going Memories are flooding back. All I can say is Yum. Well do . Hope you an yours are staying safe

I am from Egypt. I have a machine that is for my grandfather, but I want to renew it, as happened in the video. It is one of the greatest machines for making ice cream. It really tastes better. I hope I can work on it and renew it.

Awesome! I'm old enough to have cranked one of those. Summer days when the family all gathered, me and my cousins would take turns cranking and adding the ice and rock salt. Man, we thought we were walkin in tall cotton when that electric maker showed up.
