900whp Subaru teardown!

Dave finds some interesting stuff as he inspects the heads and parts on this 900whp Subaru that came in after another shop refreshed it. After only 6 hits on the dyno this head already needs some love from HeadGames.

Thinkin’ that for the intake valve oiling, whoever needs to look at engine / crankcase ventilation and blow by, and the turbo plumbing. Seems to be a general lack of a systemic approach to the build of those heads, in the first place.

Interesting to see rust on the valve springs. I wonder if the valves were media blasted, that removed a coating or affected the heat treat that resulted in a lower spring force.

Valves getting blasted not an issue. Rust on a spring is bad.

@@headgames I meant, I wonder if the valve SPRINGS were media blasted. That might allow the rust. In your experience, is it common for engines running ethanol to cause internal components to rust?

Amazing video as usual! Makes me wonder if the people on forums were just having valve float blow up their motors versus GSC "eating" their buckets/wiping buckets. Another question for you Dave, would you recommend titanium retainers for street use?

Valve float or not clearancing the head for cams. Ti for street use is perfectly fine if the spring is happy. We have had heads come back from almost a decade of abuse with Ti retainers, no problems. Usually the spring wears before the retainer does.

How do you feel about the VK56 head vs other v8 heads out there? A VK56DE built for big revs and boost has been my dream build since i watched Smokey Nagata do it big with the VK45. I saw a vk56de get disassembled due to neglect once and the bottom end looks way stout with the semi closed deck and skirted 4 bolt + T's with decent register area. With a 1.68:1 rod/stroke should be set to spin. Do the heads have potential like the block seems to?

I’m not familiar with that engine. I’ve heard it’s similar to the VQ which we have went well into the 6’s and set world records with. I guess it depends on how much power you want to make. The block looks stout on the vq but it takes a billet oil pan and a lot of other expensive parts to make more than 1500whp

Thank you for the insight! I've been told by a coworker who was involved in some serious VQ development in FL that it takes the Dailey sump set up or a Mazworx's billet block to keep them from splitting. That really pooped on my realistic 10 year plan. It's great to hear the VK heads should be units. 5 Titans chilling in the scrap yard few miles away

I heard that a wrongly assembled Subaru engine tends to move, distord, can this be seen on the cylinder head, like fretting or rubbing marks, on the cylinder head studs.

Hey Dave! Hope your cat is doing well. If moisture in the oil from running E85 will cause the valve springs to rust. Do you have a recommend valve coating, more frequent oil changes or another remedy based on your experience?
