Hollie: "Memory Cards." Me, looking suspiciously at my PS1 and 2 memory cards. Never lost them, but the fear is still real. When I was a child, I broke my arm and tried to hide it. But when I was playing Tomb Raider on my brothers PS1 (and I was far too young for it), every time an enemy showed up I pressed the shoot button so hard, my arm hurt like hell. Seeing the expression on my face, my mother got suspicious and I had to confess that my arm is propably broken. So it was. Today I'm 29 and still scared of the original TB games. And I love playing horror games...
@Kiku915 жыл бұрын
mechaguess It’s not impossible. I don’t know this person’s childhood experiences, but usually kids hide things like that if they don’t want to be a burden, or they don’t have great experiences in the hospital or doctor offices. (There could be other factors but that is another discussion on it’s own) Again I’m not saying I know their situations but it’s not impossible.

I remember my parents not buying a memory card with my PS1. My bro & I's first game was Gran Tourismo. LOL for almost a month straight we never turned of the PlayStation cause we would loose our progress & my dad knew the min we changed the thermostat temp he would freak out if he knew the PlayStation was continuously runnin while we were at school or friends houses for sleep overs. We had to shut the tv off to fool him lol & cover the green light with electrical tape. Fun times!

Oh my gosh, I had the same thing happen with the memory card that Hollie did. I got my ps1 as a Christmas present when I was 14, and with it came Final Fantasy 7. But, I didn't have a memory card, because neither my mom nor I knew you needed one. I spent the first week replaying the first 5 hours of Final Fantasy 7 over and over again until I got money for a memory card. Good times.

FFVII changed the way I thought about games. I remember I used to get Playstation magazine and read reviews, and it was one of the first games to get 10/10. I played a demo of it in HMV, didn't like it; but then went back a week or so later as I was after a new game to play and so got it half-heartedly. I started it up, played it for a while, still not impressed. Following night did the same, and the same outcome. Over the next week I did this, then I found that I was becoming engrossed in it and that it had sunk its magnificent claws into me, and I was becoming hooked! Then I played as Sephiroth and thought he was the coolest thing ever, and it was then I began to realise the scope of the game and that I really was playing one of the best games ever made. I hated having to face him off in the end, and I completed it. When I told my mate about completing it he said, did you do this, did you do that, and I realised I had missed most of the side games and stuff you could pick up on the way. I played it again and got everything and was still hooked - and that soundtrack, oh my! Its still in my top three games I've ever played.

Too many memory card woes to name them all but the one that still haunts me nearly 20 years later is the original Gran Turismo. I had all the licenses most of the limited edition cars and over a million in the bank. My friend wasn't doing as well so I agreed to copy my save to his memory card. Went into the memory card manager and accidentally chose delete rather than transfer. Luckily I noticed my mistake at the confirmation screen and pressed circle to cancel... only x was cancel and circle was confirm... Remember PS1s' Controller plugin Boomerang? For those of you born post 2000, the PS1 had only 2 controller slots but there were a lot of games that allowed more than 2 players. To help with this problem, Sony created the Boomerang, it added 4 new controller slots to the system, but at the cost of taking up one of the systems 2 controller slots, and as you probably guessed, was shaped like a boomerang. It was awesome back then, but it makes my grateful we have wireless controllers now.

The memory card bit hits hard at home. I remember playing ffx and after spending a month playing the game, I finally got to the final boss. I spent enormous amounts of time trying and failing to kill that boss. I took a break for a couple weeks. Then one day I resolved that I would beat that game finally. I personally much much prefer gaming nowadays as compared to gaming in the so called golden years of the 80s and 90s (I'm 39 and I'm gaming since I was a kid). The level of depth that the story aspect has evolved with much of modern gaming is amazing. I still love so many of the games I grew up with and they'd were certainly generally much more difficult than modern game, however, i definitely do not see any of them as being better in so so many other aspects. To each their own though.

Compared to today's cost it would be around $70-$90. It didn't matter much to me because I was 12, so I and sister saved l all our money from cutting grass around the block and chores. And that game was only a bunch of blocks and squares and we would play for hours on the huge 28" Zenith TV in the living room. There is so much to do for this generation. I must've had 5 or so PS1 memory cards. I had one dedicated to Resident Evil 2 because you had your A & B scenarios with both Leon and Claire. I also had one dedicated to Xenogears because that one took 3 blocks a pop. Then there was the fighting game and Tony Hawk card. There was a Squaresoft card for Final Fantasy games, Parasite Eve and Einhander. Remember when Square and Enix were different companies? Pepperidge Farm remembers. Finally there was one misc card for everything else, like Silent Hill and Puzzle Fighter. The worst thing about the memory cards is that they were so easily corruptible. Take them out too early and your stuff was toast. And that definitely happened to me on more than one occasion while in college. With friends like these... These really are some of my favorite videos from you guys. I appreciate the candid and sincere responses. I like that the jokes aren't scripted and we get to see what you guys actually find funny. Playing the original Pokemon Red and Blue (or any game really) on the original Gameboy... Never mind that basicly half the game didn't work as intented (Much like the first 6 Final Fantasy games). The biggest problem was finding that crucial angle during the evenings in front of a lightsource so you could even see the screen to begin with! Now, you get the backlit screen, making it possible to play simply by turning the game on...

Oh the memory cards! >.< You totally called it on that one. Didn't get a memory card with my PSone or PS2 when I got each of those for Christmas. For the PS2 I was living so far away from town, in the mountains, and of course it was during Christmas so we were snowed in. I played the beginning of Kingdom Hearts so many times that I could do the beginning island with my eyes closed. I had also received FFX that year and my mom got so sick of the "heavy metal" playing during the blitzball cutscene that she made a special trip and risked wrecking the car so my sister and I could get a memory card and move past that part.

I once got a free PS2 memory card because of the way the blister packs were stuck together, the guy scanned it and I was on my way, got home and set about opening it only to realise there were two stuck together. Thanks Electronics Boutique staff member!

So many memories ! I still have my 2 PSX memory cards (along with the console and games) and I remember gaming in the 90s fondly (Holly and I are the same age).

Memory cards were the worst, lost count of how many times something went wrong and I lost all my save data

Legend Of Dragoon. Work and grind to raise your party. Alister, the green one level 13, gets killed in story, and replaced with Arthur level 8. : { Then later Rose, your go to powerhouse, just up and leaves for... reasons. Both things thought I was gonna lose my mind. Damn near wrote a letter.

Hollie’s bit about memory cards reminds me of the time my dad who had travelled to the uk bought me a n64 without a memory pak. They didn’t sell the n64 in my country back then so I played games on my n64 without a save for the better part of a year. And I had no idea about the memory pak until I read about it in a magazine. So when my dad went back to the uk I made him get me a memory pak. It was a lot further than Cardiff that’s for sure. That being said I’ve finish games like goldeneye and fifa 98 in single sittings. Only much later could I enjoy mario 64 and ocarina of time.

It's funny that we all have USB sticks kicking around everywhere but after this video I realized that I still have a bunch of my old memory cards around my gaming area.

I actually really miss memory cards. I liked being able to go to a friends house and just pop in my card and pick up where I left off. Didn't have to sign them out and sign myself in (or when they have a PS4 account and I didn't).

You can skip the entire first level of Tomb Raider 3 with one well placed jump! You can also get on the roof of the mansion and access the quad bike without getting the key.

Eyyyy I’m from Cardiff too! :D The worst was when you had a memory card but your parents wouldn’t buy more and it was full so you had to sacrifice your game saves!

Oh wow, I had forgotten all about Koudelka...such an underrated gem of a game. I think the most horrifying moment for me was that sinking feeling when extended family have been to visit when you're not home and someone has said "oh it's fine, just play a game if you want to"... Also known as the reason I restarted Final Fantasy 8...got home to find my nephews had used ALL of the high level magic I had junctioned and somehow managed finish the Garden vs Garden section and Sorceress fight at the end of disc 2! Also the reason I obsessively have 10+ saves for all my RPGs now...

I completely understand Hollie's pain: my brother and me had a PS2 for, like, two months before my uncle bought us a memory card. We must have played the first section of Onimusha 3 five times before being able to save :)

There was so much innovation in the 90s though. New things were being made, not just slight remixes of pre-existing games(looking at you Battle Royale). Game design has been so streamlined nowadays and it shows how stangant the pool is right now. Now that isn't to say that there aren't gems, I think we've refined many things to their perceived fullest potential but I don't think saying we're "luckier" nowadays is completely accurate.

My mother put my pants in the washing machine with a memory card in it. I had over 70+ hours of Final Fantasy VII, 50+ hours of Grandia all the characters unlocked in Tekken 2 . I brought it to a friends house for Tekken 2. That memory still hurts. lol

Oh my god Shockwave Assault!!! I definitely played that and forgot it existed. It's like you just described a dream of mine but then it turns out it wasn't a dream, it was a random PS1 game haha. How surreal! I learned where Cairo is as a kid because of that first level.

Had a lot of great PS1 memories of my friend and I starting a Final Fantasy game either without a memory card or with a memory card that had no space to save.

The memory card thing hit home. I was heartbroken when my card with my BoFIV save died. These days I could have just downloaded my cloud save. But at the time just pure despair.

The limitations in control in RE2 made it so great and intense, you really had to decide how to move and then execute properly, no fast reaction twitch out of a dangerous situation. Try the remake of RE1 on PS4, you can choose modern controls, but it destroys the tension because it doesn't fit the game and makes you superhuman, like no need to turn around etc.

Memory cards... Dial up broadband.... FLOPPY DISKS! Ah, the ancient entries on the technological ladders. Love 'em. Anyone remember the Dreamcast?... That was a thing too for all of a year or so.

I remember my friend inviting me over to show me his PS2. When he started searching through memory cards for a save file, as an XBox player, I thought he was having a laugh... It made no sense to me. It's also why I wept tears of blood when my PHAT PS3 bricked and took all my PS2 saves along with it (including 150+ hours of Persona 3). Then again, when I was a kid, most of my games were saved on 5 1/4-inch disks and cassette tapes, so can't complain too much XD

I just finished a 90's game not that long ago. It was the Original Breath of Fire for the SNES. Anyway I'm enjoying my time going through it, then I get to Carmen and Tick Tock tower. Getting up the tower is hard enough but then the bad guy kicks you out once you reach the top and separates you from your party. So not only do you have to find your way back by yourself but you have enemies that know an instant death spell. And because this is a 90's game you can't save anywhere so if you die you have to do the whole thing over again. So the entire trip back I kept thinking how I played Ni Nu Kuni 2 before this and just remember how fortunate games have reached a point where we not only have auto saves but the ability to save anywhere without having to worry about designated save points when exploreing on the world map.

Ah, memory cards. How I don't miss needing them for every game. I use to have 3 or 4 PSOne memory cards, of which I only have one anymore. The rest got lost. The multi-page ones that could act like 5 or 6 memory cards in one were AMAZING... And frequently would end up erasing everything on a given page. Was so amazed when I got a PS2 and the memory card had eight whole MB of space. Despite all the games I have, and almost never deleting any saves from it I've never filled that sucker. Unlike my PSOne cards which I was constantly having to micro-manage which game saves I kept, and what card I used for what game.

I grew up in the 80's when the only way you could continue a level (in some games) was by making it to the end and writing down a long code (like in "Punch Out") only to find out you screwed up and wrote OLXB6-04GYH-12OOP where all the O's were actually zeroes and the "B" was an eight or an "l" was a one.
