She’s absolutely right, she was left to die simply because she didn’t want the gunman to hear her. This woman still feels bad about the dispatcher losing her job and that’s a testament to her true humanity. Heart breakingly evil if you ask me, that dispatcher needs to find a job in a different field.

I was a 911 operator for 5 years. You’re trained to deal with situations like this. We know a whisper means the caller is close to the perpetrator. We’re supposed to let caller know we’re there and pinged the call and send help. Never hang up.

I'll go you one better. I used to work in the complaint department of a business and our first and most important rule was never hang up on a customer. We'd be given a warning the fist time and put on probation, and if it ever happened again within that period, you'd be terminated. Thing is, those weren't even life or death call. Just the company's reputation for providing quality service.

Except I have been hung up on when a man was trying to violently break into my house at 3 a.m. - trying all doors and windows and trying to physically break down the doors while screaming. I was told to hide in a closet and he would eventually leave. Then they hung up and never sent the police to check if I was ok. If he would have been able to get in somehow, I would have been toast.

If the operator heard enough to say "they can't hear you", she heard enough to know that the caller was in danger. @@zulu3274 Like most jobs, I'm sure there is a certain personality type they try to hire. Sadly, 911 operators have one of the highest stress jobs and are underpaid for their work. @@zulu3274 we went through a series of different tests to weed out applicants. We had typing test, a reading comprehension test. Then there was a geographical test (they gave us a map with fire stations w/various equipment at each. Then they would give a scenario and tell kind equipment needed. You had to say which location would get to the scene quickest). There was also a hearing and vision test. Then there was a panel interview. I think it was one more test but I can’t recall what it was but I know it was some kind of personality test. Background check including education, employment, traffic and of course criminal. My training program was 4 months and that included ride alongs with police fire and ambulance.

@@soulife8383 It doesn't matter, every 911 call should be treated as an emergency. As a dispatcher, you are the first person on the scene and its their job to handle each call accordingly... sometimes that means listening if you have trouble hearing the caller, connecting a translator if the caller doesn't speak their language or TTY for a deaf caller, asking yes/no questions to find out why they're whispering, providing instructions if necessary, keeping the caller calm, and dispatching medics. Even if they couldn't hear the caller, technology is so amazing that you can see on a map where the caller is calling from and get their location, if its a landline you can see the exact address...either way you should dispatch patrol to check out the scene. Not coming for you directly, just letting people know that its not unheard of to get a call where you can't hear the caller, hang up calls, children calling, nonverbal callers, etc.. This dispatcher did not care and yes they should lose their job and possibly face criminal charges.

I feel any 911 Dispatcher who is negligent to their jobs and others life's, should face heavy charges. I can't wrap my mind around a person who can hear all of this horror going on, and remain so cold, callous and indifferent? Termination is a joke. The dispatcher needs to face both termination and prison time. An Officer or a Nurse would be brought up on charges, so should a Dispatcher...

When I hear stories of dispatchers like this, and the other one for a lady that drowned in her car during a flash flood. It hurts to think of someone suffering during an emergency and for the dispatcher to just add on to that stress and despair rather than actually helping. It must feel like the whole world is against you when stuff like that happens.

Really. In an emergency situation, clear spoken communication is not always easy, and on top of that, people who are Deaf or HOH need access to emergency services as well. I have heard of stories of people calling 911 and falling silent for a few minutes, and the operator would try to regain contact and wait for the caller to talk again. They wouldn't just hang up. I don't know how those operators are trained, but this must've gone against everything that she was taught.
