OK, I had to go down to the basement and dig out this LP record I bought back in 1980 when I was 16 years old. I started listening to jazz when I was 12, at night on KGU AM radio in Honolulu. They used to play this song in their regular rotation, but I could never find the album in the record stores. After several years of searching, I had one of the employees look it up, and order it for me. If I remember correctly, it had to be imported from Japan, and it took a month to get in. I've probably listened to this recording a couple hundred times over the years, and have never gotten tired of it. A few years ago I heard my (then 15 year old) son grooving to this song in his room. Surprised, I asked him where he got it from. Apparently he stumbled across it in a (very) old iTunes playlist of mine that was lurking in the dark recesses of my old iMac, and copied it to his favorites list. Album - CRYSTAL GREEN, by RAINBOW featuring Will Boulware Musicians: Mike Brecker: Tenor Saxophone Will Boulware: Acoustic Piano, Fender Rhodes Electric Piano, ARP Pro 2600 Synthesizer, ARP String Ensemble Cornell Dupree: Electric Guitar Eric Gale: Electric Guitar Gordon Edwards: Electric Bass Steve Gadd: Drums Ralph MacDonald: Congas, Percussion Recorded May 11, 15, 1976 at Vanguard Studio, NYC

This is the kernel of Organic Smooth Jazz featuring the gentler side of Michael Breaker, an Organic Real Jazz Aficionado of first class exuberance; he who took up the saxophone cudgel of John Coltrane and deposited safely in the hearts of all true music lovers.
@wyndhleodumegwu2538 жыл бұрын
It's regrettable that: 1) Mike had been given the slot herein to extend on his Organic Real Jazz improvisation in this cool, smooth, funky groove of a song. (It takes lots of skill to flavor a Pop song with Organic Real Jazz Improvisational fragments. Stanley Turrentine [RIP] was the best at this feat; and so is Nelson Rangel ) 2) Michael hadn't done much more of this commercially successful stuff - concurrently with his Organic Real Jazz purity.

Khurram Aziz, I DO ENJOY your vaunting [ I quote ]: " ...I had the best elite private education on the planet...and I was] top of the class in all subjects to the chagrin of my fellow alumni ...", although your vainglory strikes me as being "not merely somewhat" hyperbolic; it is gross self-adulation, narcissism and pedantry in the vein of President-elect Donald J. Trump, charlatan extraordinaire. "... never mind", I am overjoyed that you have arrogated to and for YOURSELF self-promotion to the "top-of-the-class echelon of poetic superfluities with your: pedantic, elite, chagrin, inept, alumni, misconstrued ... Consequently, Social Promotion is accorded you with "automaticity"! A bientot!

Congratulations for attempting, however! A 12-year-old Rabbi once said, in Standard English, "Practice makes Perfect." Be good now! @petesheehan and claragary 1). Michael always counted the money 2) He and his brother Randy were/are excellent businessmen with acumen. 3) most importantly, Michael always poured his professional and personal heart into every project he recorded. He stated many times that anything on recording was forever and he didn't ever like being embarrassed by something he was on. He did record a large number of late 70s disco tracks for various NYC local disco and R&B singers that were sometimes funky and sometimes cheesy but his contributions were always outstanding. This recording is a classic Cornell Dupree/Eric Gale groove. Very easy on the ears and Michael plays it very tastefully. Enjoy!

I had this album when it was new in 1977, Will Boulware's Rainbow "Crystal Green". Best track on the album, as I recall, a great Gene McDaniels' composition. Ironic that while Boulware is the session leader, in retrospect, he is likely the least notable name among this band of crossover jazz session aces.

Michael Brecker is one of my heroes on the sax, but this, out of strong beat timing, is not of my taste. Maybe once in a while, but I think it had too much of a laid back out of timing performance. Definitely, I'm no one to judge such a master musician, but sincerely, this is the only performance that I can't give all the stars to Michael. I do this with the an utmost respect, because Michael Brecker was and is still a sax master to all of us sax players and musicians, RIP.( Sorry for this one Mick)
@rolanddoucet4589 жыл бұрын
claragary Take yourself seriously much? This is perfect and your profound pretention at 'reviewing' this is beyond silly. "Out of beat timing"??!!! "too much of a laid back out of timing performance"!? What the f..k does this mean? Can you try to find out more about music and how the English language works and try again to say something that begins to make sense. It's funk, and the feel and tempo is perfect. Too bad you can't appreciate it.
@TheSaxmanrick8 жыл бұрын
+claragary Wow. You're thinking too much. Haven't you ever played a tune where you're not the prime soloist? And if you criticize this song then you're crazy. I say crazy because you obviously haven't heard the whole album because MB absolutely tears up 2 songs with long fade solos. 2 of my favorite solos ever. Early MB from the 70s.
