92214 - A 9F at Speed

A little speed up video I've cobbled together using clips of recently re-liveried 9F no.92214, running at the Great Central Railway today. Looking superb in her new colours.

A superb video, I always find watching the small wheels of a 9F at speed somewhat hypnotic. I miss this engine when it lived at the East Lancs for some time. She was an absolute beast and a sight to behold. Still, I'm very happy she's found a good home on the GCR. Can't wait to see her doublehead with the Maroon livered 8F. Two freight engines looking stunning in Express liveries.

I watched a documentary about 9fs and there was a time they did a bit of a speed run with one when they were still under BR operation and I believe they said they calculated the valve gear rotated at 8 times a second or something like that. Astonishing 😲 🤯🤯

It's a shame that the real Star is a static exhibit, but I suppose also a blessing. They were often clocked at 90 on passenger trains,

It’s unlikely evening star will return to steam, as due to their flangeless center driving axles , the class is banned on the mainline

It's bizarre to hear the valve gear of a full size steam loco running so rapidly. It almost sounds like it should be a scale model.

If the 9Fs could run 90 mph as a 2-10-0, what if it had a 4-6-2 or even 4-6-4 configuration, how fucking fast would it top out at, I bet it would even beat Mallard’s record

Its good how you have sped her up :) how did you get the exhausr beat to match the speed? They should run them at mainline speed as it is a mainline raiwau

The GCR is permitted to run rolling stock up to 60 mph on the down line between Rothley and Loughborough for test purposes under special conditions which obviously include the railway being closed to the public. This arrangement has been in force for many years and is unique in the heritage railway sector.
