Always inspiring to see our seniors throwing down.

Wow if this granny can do it I can do it. I started CrossFit this week and I don't like people seeing me that I am a sick person or has an asthma. I want to boost my energy and stay healthy and fit.

Why do people talk to and about seniors as though they were slightly slow or not quite bright? The condescension is extremely off-putting. If we are all lucky we will get there one day. Do you want to be spoken to as though you were 5 years old? You see this everywhere. When there is an older person in line, they're spoken to as though they're not quite bright. They'll take out their phone to enter an appointment and the kindly condescending person will ask them "Do you need me to write that down for you dear?" as though they weren't in the middle of entering it into their calendar. That's an oddly specific example but I witnessed it earlier today. People who would never address others that way will talk to seniors as though they were cute toddlers. It is offensive and anyone reading this comment who recognizes the behavior should stop and encourage others to stop too. It isn't endearing and it isn't kind. It's dismissive and it grates on older people the same way it would grate on anyone. I talked to the woman who was spoken to this way at PT and gave her an opportunity to vent. She was gracious about it and I asked her how. She said it happens so much she had to learn to ignore it. That made me sad and angry on her behalf. Older people are people. They aren't toddlers and if they are healthy they're mentally intact and able. Treat them and speak to them the way you would like to be spoken to. No false condescending cheer, don't speak down to them and don't assume they aren't living in the same century.

@@PhoenixRain01010 I am Gen X too and a woman. I've gotten the very slightest edge of that behavior in the past and for that reason I recognized it. I'm also an attorney and originally from New York so the amount of BS I'll take is minimal! When someone asked me if they wanted them to write my appointment down when I had my phone in my hand I looked at them. I wasn't rude, I wasn't unkind, but I just looked at them with a slightly raised eyebrow until they said "Oh, I see you have your phone out, you don't need it written down" at which point I smiled.

@@Kyarrix This type of scenario is all too common with me as well, and it's very annoying
@Kyarrix Жыл бұрын
@@PhoenixRain01010 isn't it surprising that they do it to women in their late 40s and 50s and even early 60s? People who are still in the prime of their lives and presumably competent to use a phone to schedule an appointment? I don't think I have encountered anyone under the age of 70 or 80 who can't put an appointment into Google calendar or whatever app they use. I think it is a subset of sexism, misogyny in general. Unfortunately it also appears to be internalized because too frequently it is women doing this to other women. I understand why it happens but it is difficult for me to not call it out when I see it. It's a balancing act, if you call it out all the time, if you see it all the time it is difficult to not become angry and anger generally doesn't change hearts and minds. We have to keep calling it out and trying to (gently when we can) educate people. Don't put up with it. You deserve better, I deserve better, we all do.
