I'm using silicone toe spreaders or a splint. Once the toes get use to it, the big toe toe will stop fighting with it's own muscle memory and begin to move back. It actually works. This will take more time to correct the damage already done over the years. Buy wide boots or shoes that fit comfy and the foot can move from side to side without any toe squeezing. Toe socks do not work for this method. Continue using toe spreaders or splint each evening for a few hours and remove if discomfort begins. Repeat process each night or every other night as your toes will begin to adjust. Try to catch this before it gets too severe and need surgery. Surgery cuts nerve endings in the bottom of your foot and causes a permanent numbness that is uncomfortable. Foot doctors may not tell you this and you will have to live with it for the rest of your life. Try to avoid surgery if possible.

😮 I imagine nerve damage in feet negates any benefits of good toe spacing that might improve balance, and just replaces that issue with a new one of lack of/inadequate sensation... Not to mention a long time with strange cold/burning electrical pains that can recur years on. Nerves take an age to heal or re-map, if not at all. I had experience of colectomy to remove a tumor. The surgeon thought "saving my life" was sufficient not to have to warn me about 45% risk of pudendal nerve damage, in my case, 5 years ago... nor the LARS that affects bowel cancer survivors for the rest of their life. It takes a long time to heal, manage and adapt to a "new normal". My experience of hip surgery at RNOH was much more positive. It depends a lot on the consultant, the hospital culture, and essentially their patient attitude. Their experience of your condition is often very academic, and they have little idea of how their intervention affects you long after you leave hospital. They assume you'll have read it in the pre surgery literature, or accept it when you sign consent forms

I see you didn’t mention genetics as a possible reason. My grandma, my mom and now I all have it. I can assure you my grandma and even my mom never worn narrow shoes. They grew up on a farm and back in the day in Eastern Europe shoes were very simple. Neither of them had flat feet or walked weirdly. I can only check the box for occasional pointy shoes. Yet we all have it…I believe genetics play a part too. All the advice I find very helpful and will try them all. Thank you so much for this video

He did say acquired flat feet, which I would say acquired by genetics. My mom overpronated, and my arches totally flatten and feet pronate. My mom's sister probably did too as she had bad bunions. My mother also had hammer toes and other foot problems. My dad's feet were great, and I seem to be in the middle between them for foot problems.

I went barefoot much of the time until my mid 20’s. Even with flat feet, I had no other foot issues and enough dexterity in my toes to tie and untie shoelaces. Now in my 60’s, after way more shoe wearing, my feet aren’t so good. The last few years I found the most comfortable has been quality sandals year round. I live in Canada so, yes, even in the snow. I’ve only recently heard of barefoot shoes and will be watching your review of the best ones for bunions.

I've had this for about 17 years and for the last 9 I've worn a toe spreader just on my big toe and it has absolutely stopped the progression. I just use the ones women use to paint their toes with from the dollar stores. If you should try this beware that for some time your foot will be MORE sore as your toe is being somewhat forced back the other way. It goes away.

Focusing on placing your feet straight helped me deal with back pain from my scoliosis. I've recently seen a newer surgical technique for fixing bunions. Instead of the older bunionectomy surgery, this new technique uses small plates to correct the unstable big toe joint. According to what I read, some of the newest evidence points to unstable toe joints as being a primary cause of bunions. As opposed to earlier beliefs that the pushing out of the big toe bones was the primary cause of bunions. Thank you for your information, as I'm sure it can all be used together along with the newest understandings of bunions to help curb and repair bunions. Preferably without surgery all together.

I wore great shoes in my teens, seldom wore heels and gave them up completely at 21. I never wore pointed shoes, I have a good arch in my feet, get plenty of exercise, been doing those exercises to try to get the bunion to lesson....I have done each suggestion except for the shoes as I have worn the right shoes since I was a teen. It took me to be 55 before the bunions that appeared some years prior actually hurt. I have tried each thing you suggest and none worked. My entire family gets bunions and all of us wear good shoes! For us it is inherited.

@@readingwithamy9397 I don't wear shoes much and that isn't what caused me to have bunions! Each person is different! My family were all FARMERS. They went barefoot and alot and so did I but all of us got them. It won't help my feet to go completely barefoot as they TROB terribly barefoot. Please feel free to not wear shoes but don't tell me what to do. My twin sister died last year from ALS. Her bunions were worse then mine and a solid year of her not walking did not help hers! I wear Altra running and hiking shoes. It's the only brand of athletic shoes I can wear. I am aging with little fat pads left on the bottom of my feet so regular bare foot shoes with little to no cushion are too painful to wear. Some Altra shoes are well cushioned so I can walk long distance in them without any issues. For casual and at home wear, I swear by Crocs. They have natural foot shaped toe boxes like the Altras but you wear them like sandals or slippers.

I'm so glad I found this channel. I have bunions, heel spurs, and had plantar fasciitis at one point in time. I noticed something was wrong with my ankles when I started practicing yoga and the same exercise you suggested to straighten your ankles was a yoga pose I was struggling with. After a week I was able to maintain balance but I will admit some weeks after I still have not perfected it. Now that you have explained this in detail I understand now how my ankles contributed to collapsed arches and how it exacerbated the issues I have with my bunions. I also think that my knees are a bit inverted which also contributes to this problem. I definitely look forward to your program.

I found this video before my bunion got bad. I just developed it over the past month. I'm very grateful to find this, I was told that it only got worse once you developed one. I'm also going to start wearing toe separators used for pedicures when I get home from work every night to help separate my toes. I bought some running shoes that I really liked a couple years back and have been wearing them ever since. And I think that's what caused the bunion. Also I wear too tight socks that push my toes together too much. And I work on my feet all day. I'll be back with a two-week update!

I just had to thank you for this video. Despite the fact that I just celebrated my 70th birthday, and have advanced bunions that have become quite painful recently, using the toe spreaders for 2 hours in the evening for just a few days has helped immensely. I was totally unable to separate my toes without using my hands, and could barely bend my toes at all. My toes were so tightly squished together that it was driving me nuts. Now 2-3 weeks later, there is a gap between my toes, small, but there, and my ability to bend them has improved. I'm so grateful!

excellent, thank-you. I've been wearing hand knitted (wide) socks, bare feet and birkenstocks (wide) for over 20 years. I also had a washing machine land on my right foot (big toenail blackened and fell off) and also a horse stood on my right foot. So poor right foot now has a bunion forming and I think a visit to a specialist is now in order and I reckon your toe spreading exercise is so innate and primal we all should be encouraged to do it from infancy as a fun and natural thing to do.
