Steel is 4145 H MODIFIED. Not your average steel.. quite tough but chips excellent. 93mm is the smallest tool I can use so I will make one to cut 74mm.

@@ntwadumela_ if you look at the trepanning tool, there is a wooden pad on it. He uses a chisel to make those marks, wich cut the wood.(wich is shown in the video) This way the pad fits the bore perfectly and keeps the tool nice and straight. Hope this helps

This brings back memories of my first real job working in a trepan shop in Houston back in the late 1970's. I don't remember the numbers, but recall the shop drilling over two miles of hole per month! They were running over 8 machines with two shifts. I didn't run any of them, I help build the trepanners they had, did a lot of design work, drafting, and making parts for the machines. The company was recently shut down and is up for sale. So sad!!! You guys are amazing. We could have used your help 2 yrs ago. We needed a copper alloy pipe 12.5 dia x 86 inches long. We sent it to a shop in Baton Rouge La. They finished the ID and left 3 inches on the OD for us to machine. What a beast to finish. It had a .25 wall thickness when done.

You do make it look easy Dave. I have machined 4145 plate on my mill, not sure if it was modified or not, but it was nice to machine. Didn't warp either, very stable. It's my birthday this weekend and with the restrictions here all the beer parlours are shut down. I guess I'll have to drink beer at home with the wife and kids. Have a good weekend. Ken

I would love to give this a try sometime on my big lathe. Not really worth building the tooling to do it with though to save 2 or 3 bits of material. I am not doing super high dollar exotics like inconel. Do you know what they are doing with those big pieces? Some kind of turbine work I would imagine.

Inconel 718 is used in the gas and oil field to withstand the pressures involved. It's always a bit of a joke when they leave as the workers guess which sea bed they will go to.

I've covered this on previous videos. Boring by Trepanning can not "run off" only cut a bigger or smaller hole. It's just another benefit of Trepanning.

Ok. Thanks for info. I was told by a respectable machine shop owner that gun drills very deep bores that the only way to keep the bore straight, with respect to OD, is to turn the work and turn the drill in opposite directions ( obviously ). Just not sure about if the equal rotational speed matters. If you are always getting straight true bores, that’s very interesting knowledge. Thanks for sharing.

First, AWESOME that you made those long tools. Cut at the same depth, very impressed. the rope made me laugh. I used to use magnets on the 96" vertical boring machine to cut the chatter. But now the question. How close is that match line on the bore ? and a follow up.. do you do any other finish work on the bore ?

But I'm disappointed you did not show the most important part, the set up and explaining that which your boring out procedure etc Anyone can watch a round with slight defects turning and a boring bar going into it, But you know the most important parts were left out, Besides the sound was barely understood, to much back ground sound effects
