Good vid, just wanted to point out that those aren't stress fractures on the pump bracket, they are casting marks

Great video. Thank you. Local shop wanted $680 to replace this. I did it for $125 for parts.

I'm sure a lot of the guys that said use ATF recommend it if the pump is leaking because it's thicker so it won't leak out as fast. Good on ya for actually following the manufacturer's recommended fluid👍🏼 I was dreading having to do this on my truck right here in the middle of deer season but I should be able to pull it off fairly easily. Thanks for the info!

Thx for the vid! Good job. Yes, Auto Zone parts are NOT what they once were. Very frustrating to say the least. At least you showed more patience then me!!

Thank you. I watched this because my power steering has failed. I thought it was just a matter of removing the pump and putting on a new one, but I read that the system needs to be bled, and I don't know how to do that. Watching how you struggled with it, even just dealing with the pulley, I guess I'll just take it to the mechanic and rent a truck in the mean time.

This is actually really well explained and shown. It will be good info to take with me on my trip to the junkyard. Gonna see if the pumps are cheap enough to warrant trying

A few things I will never touch from AutoZone, starters, alternators, power steering pumps, mass air flow sensors, O2 sensors.. Lots of these parts will fail right out of the box, now if you just absolutely have to buy an alternator or a starter, before you even leave the store with it, have them test it. Too much work involved for installing the stuff only to have it fail right out of the box. Lessons learned, hopefully I can save you some heartache if you read this. Take care, Chris

Great video. Showed the pulley removal and installation clearly, that can be the daunting part of this repair for some. I watched your video before getting a harbor freight pulley removal installation set to make sure it would do the trick. Thanks for posting!

Dude, after you got all the new lines on and you filled up the reservoir, what you need to do is put a floor jack in the center of the chassis in the front and jack up your truck until your front wheels are off the ground completely, Then turn your key on to unlock the steering wheel, do not start the truck. Just turn the key to unlock the steering wheel and turn it slowly from lock to lock back-and-forth into you hear all the gurgling gone, there is air bubbles in your system there's nothing wrong with the pump. Turn the steering wheel from lock the lock two or three times, and then check the fluid in the reservoir, do not let it go dry top it off to the normal height and then keep turning your steering wheel locked the lock five or six more times until you don't hear any gurgling which means there are air bubbles in the system. Drop the jack and put the truck back on the ground, check your cap with your dipstick and make sure the fluid is correct, and go take it for a drive. I have a 2001 Dodge ram 1500 I just did that to my truck.

Thanks for your time.. appreciate how you let me know what size wrenches and sockets to use. I'm getting the p/s pump at autozone..can only hope it works the first time and no returns. removing and replacing the pulley seems to be the hardest thing to do on this job.

My 2001 Dodge Ram has a leak around the power steering pump. I am a weekend mechanic wannabe and do some of my own mechanic work and take my truck to the shop for more complicated work. I thought this would be simple, but there's no fucking way I am replacing my own power steering pump after seeing this video and the issues you had, especially with bleeding the pump. Thanks for the detailed video, I will take my Dodge Ram to my mechanic and pay him labor costs to do the job right. Thumbs up on your video.

Dude, you make too big an issue. That's an everyman fix. This guy just had Murphys Law step in. You know, "anything that can go wrong, does go wrong". That, and he did it backwards. Easy man, trust me. Try it. Ik women that could and has do it.

you have to use a vacuum bleeder sometimes to get all the air out. it can be a pain in the ass but sometimes that's the only way to do it. some vehicles you can't just turn the wheel 50 times to get all the air bubbles out. a lot of people think they got a faulty part from the store when really it is just improperly bled
@keithhaynes5348
@keithhaynes5348 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, not on Dodge Rams. I've bled 1st gen to 4th, all sizes of motors pushing steering wheel lock to lock.

Would be easier to pull off pulley and hoses when mounted to bracket. Then just 3 easy bolts to remove pump. Leave bracket attached to engine.

Definitely, always use CHERRY JUICE, ie ATF+4 ONLY. No matter what anyone ever tells you. Every Dodge ram until 2002 and maybe afterwards, transmission and power steering. Trust me, my truck has had 3 trans and 2 PS pumps.

Nice vid - a bit hard to see/hear you sometimes...some missing bits but overall good idea what Im getting into lol. a mech told me while back I got a bad leak power steering will need to be replaced - but so far still have ok steering? how long can I do drive like that? I have replacement (used) but in better shape rdy to go. yes it is quite messy under the pump/hoses n whatnot. also, can this fluid leak cause other problems? like killing a ball joint or something? or tie rod joint maybe

@drewtrailer681

Off at first w key in to not lock wheel. Then again with it on. Keep turning full lock until fluid level stops dropping then the air will bleed. Follow me for more recipes lol

About that light on the hood he unplugged, yea I unplugged it soon after getting the truck, one because I was testing off the shitty heat fabric shit that came on the inside of the hood from fabric, and two because yes a light is a light and it's better than nothing if it's pitch black outside but that little light doesn't work for shit in giving you enough light, could use a phone light flashlight, one of those shop lights you plug in and hang on the hood

Good deal, I thought I may have to pull the radiator like on some. I have to get the pulley off to replace the pump because the bracket can't be removed because of a bolt behind it type of engineering genius.

Not really enough room but you could take the shroud off, protect the radiator or remove it too then there would be enough room.

the shaft from the pulley tapers down to a very small size where it connects to the inner pump its self.....they are doomed to fail if your under a heavy load or towing a 5th wheel. 2 ways to tell....you lose power steering and there is zero turbulence in the res.........and/ or remove the belt and the pulley and half of the shaft slide right out of the pump.....65 bucks for a reman

Do not use ATF fluid in 2nd gen Rams. I have always use the clear fluid and never had any problems. A shop replaced my box and pump (a long story) but they bleww out my power steering that was replaced 2 years ago so had to replace it again. Then the one that is working is going out and it's only been a month since it was replaced. I looked in the pump and found they use the ATF. I'm guessing that's why they keep having problems. This truck has been in the family since new and came from the factory with the clear fluid. Tomorrow dropping it back off to the shop so they can replace the pump for the third time and I'm requesting they don't use the ATF.

Damn I came to see how to bleed the lines because I replaced my pump a few months ago and it had intermintant problems but now its not working at all. I had a friend bleed the lines but I checked it a week ago after it stopped working entirely and it was low, so it makes me think he didn't bleed the lines correctly. Anyway I guess I'll keep looking to see how to bleed the lines and see if I can find the receipt and if they'll take it it back / replace the pump.

Remove the power steering reservoir cap and with the vehicle turned on turn the steering wheel from the left to the right a few times. The air in the system should work it's way out. You can have a friend watch for bubbles for confirmation

Ah crap, not unusual for remanufactured parts, be it Auto Zone or their competitors, like Oreily's. Took 3 alternators one time and two compressors another from Oreily's to get it right. I am not necessarily blaming Oreily's but the rebuilders. However, good video

@alexsparks5596 the service manual for the tuck specifies ATF +4, I have a 2001 dodge ram and it’s leaking so this was a good video regardless🙏 the bleeding part does scare me but I might just buy a bleeder to be safe.

ATF+4 ALWAYS, just turn your steering wheel lock to lock about 30 times with the truck started. Once the whining goes away, it's bled.
