I used an 18mm Crows foot on the PS fittings too. This is a great video and I wish I’d known to let the box pivot off one bolt to access the PS lines. Great shortcut. Here’s a little info that may help my fellow Dodge truck owners. Power steering o-rings MOPAR 5205254 (5/16 ID x 7/16 OD x 1/16“ thick) Thru frame (3) bolts are 10.9 class M14-2.0 by 110mm Dorman 460-895

Excellent video! The only comment I would add is I found after you have added power steering fluid, I raise the front end until the front tires are an inch off the ground and gently work the steering wheel back and forth, with the power steering pump cap off to work out any air that might be trapped in the lines. Otherwise Len you did a great job on this video like your many other videos. Thank you!

How would you be able to diagnose if it were the steering box or the shaft needing replacement? I don't want to bring it in and would like to diagnose myself, if possible. Thank you.

Public tip for anyone coming back to this video, if you're having trouble disconnecting the pitman arm from the gearbox, remove the drag link from the pitman arm first. In my case, the added weight was too much for my puller and ended up stripping out the puller (twice). So before giving up, destroying it, and just buying a new one, try this first.

Planning on doing steering gearbox soon but makes me happy I did pitman arm awhile back, was the original one im sure and i tried pitman arm pullers just like the one he's using and one I used an impact and spun it so fast I welded the threads on the rod to the body of the puller and then used a rachet on a different puller and bent the puller and pitman arm wouldn't move still, ended up taking a grinder to the side of the arm carefully till I was almost touching the gearbox with the grinder blade then stuck a chisel in there and whacked the chisel pretty good and it split the metal to where it came right off no problem

Are you supposed to center the pitman arm shaft of the steering box? I saw a guy spin the shaft before installing the new one all the way one way and the other way as well counting the turns then splitting that number in half and leaving the shaft there before putting the pitman arm back on?? Thanks

Scary as hell watching you try to loosen that rusty fitting with an open-end box wrench. After having worked on a number of old vehicles, I'd never go near a fitting without a line wrench.

Would the steering box also be a cause of power steering fluid being sprayed all under the front of my truck? I have fluid all over the place on my tie rods, stabilizer bar, and all my front suspension. I’m at a loss right now but I know it’s not my pressure line tho.

If someone could help I would 100% greatly appreciate it.
@taylorvw95772 жыл бұрын
Try and clean off the areas covered in PS fluid with brake clean and then inspect for a leak. Due to gravity fluid is going to leak to its lowest point, this may mislead your diagnosis. Yes, the steering box could be the cause. However you could have a leak anywhere thruout the PS system causing the drip down off the steering box. Good luck with your truck!
@The_Baker_Social2 жыл бұрын
When my pressure line from the pump had a pin hole, it wouldn't leak or spray until the steering wheel was turned to full lock in either direction. Have someone turn the wheel to full lock while you inspect. I see your comment is 7 months old, but hey. Never know when someone with the same issue will see this!

1 5/16 works- I couldn't find any metric sockets except a 32mm which is too small, & a 35 which is too big. 33mm should be just right if you can find one, but 1 5/16 works fine

So, you said after filling reservoir to the cold level, start up the engine and let it purge/burp out the air.....do you turn the wheel lock to lock several times like all the other videos say to do? or just let the engine run....do you do it with the cap on or off?

very helpful video as I have to do this tomorrow, and I know it's easy to criticize others but one item you didn't mention and please if Ian wrong tell me so, when removing the shaft you are hitting the steering column but never mentioned disconnecting the battery so that the air bag does not deploy, or am I wrong ?
@The_Baker_Social2 жыл бұрын
The airbags receive a signal from the computer, which communicates with the impact sensors that are generally behind bumpers and body panels. A direct blow to the steering wheel area shouldn't cause deployment. It's never a bad idea to disconnect the battery prior to working on the vehicle however. Never know when you might accidentally ground out the terminals at the starter with tools or parts as you're maneuvering around under there 😬

I just put my rack in and when the steering wheel is straight the tie rod threads are extremely uneven. One side has over an inch of threads showing and the other has no threads showing. If I loosen the steering coupler at the rack, it only goes on one way. It’s like my steering is half a turn off. When I turn the steering wheel, it turns farther one way than the other. How can I correct this? 2003 dodge ram 1500 4wd

@@1AAuto I'm always working on old rusty stuff here in PA and I always turn to the youtube for tips and tricks on projects! I watched you guys before, definitely do a good job explaining stuff. I had something weird going on with the second gen, lost steering on bumps and at speed ( witch was terrifying) but who ever did the lift, for whatever reason cut the crossmember off that holds the track bar for the axle for side to side movement, put a spacer in it and welded it to the frame, probably for the lift. Anyway it broke , O and they had the pitman arm a quarter turn off lol
