Please be aware that sometimes that one of the water pump bolts also goes through the pump, but also the timing chain cover which can develop a leak if the timing chain cover gasket is old. This occurred on my '97 5.2 ZJ forcing me to tear it back down to replace it, but I also chose to replace the timing chain and gears. So I acquired a full kit that contained a full set of gaskets and new front crankshaft seal. But was able to lower, but not drop the front of the oil pan to replace the seal there also. Do yourself a favor by dismounting the alternator, air conditioning unit and mounting bracket to make it easier to work. The AC unit can merely be seat off to the side without disconnecting it. Not moving them out of the way merely doubles the work effort of replacing the hoses. Great video for not being a studio production. :)

Hey didja do it... Cos I now have to do mine after payday which is Friday... Does not seem complicated... But Im a girl doing this, I could totally screw something up... Any pointers? Im a newbie at working on cars. Been working on my jeep for 4 years now. Ive changed axles, the, starter IAC valve ya know? Is this water pump job going to kill me?
@CameronDC-Grimes Жыл бұрын
I will never go back to the 01-04 WJ hydrolic fan system. That giant fan and shroud gives you under 1" of room to work on cooling system. I poked a hole in my radiator but I have an Electric fan conversion. No power steering fan or giant shroud. I have over 1 foot of working room to put in the new rad and fan. I plan on installing fan on radiator outside of Jeep before I drop in the radiator.

I have a 96 5.2 and did the same thing about 7-8 years ago. I was just changing the waterpump then figured the age and replaced radiator, upper and lower hoses, thermostat and also all heater core hoses which are factory molded at the same time, years later no problems, yeah don't skimp on a new thermostat or cap I see you have an Optima battery, I have the same, also replaced the entire battery cable harness, which includes both cables, starter cables, alternator cables, etc. and its factory MOPAR so perfect length and wrapped. Ongoing project as I just replaced both front axles recently along with hub bearings after 8 years, hub bolts and backing plates, hub bolts should be replaced if rusted because 13mm 12 point can strip then you're in trouble, at 21 years old and 146,000 miles I doubt I will be replacing again. Common failure on the ZJ is the power steering bracket that's made of white metal and eventually cracks. Tomorrow a complete tune then next weekends project are 4 hole injectors which are already shipped, all in all its an extremely dependable vehicle- probably more reliable than these MB ML and easier to fix.

Thank you for taking the time to write your comment. You are much more ambitious than I was with the heater core. I just put up with it. The V8 engine is strong and will easily go over 300,000 miles. The transmission on the other hand only goes 120,000 - 140,000 miles. Good luck with your Jeep, we certainly enjoyed ours.

Thanks. I'm considering whether or not I can do this myself - unfortunately I'm not a very good mechanic. At least I'll have some knowledge of what it takes when I talk to a shop. Also, considering whether its worth it - my 97 GC 5.2 has 243,000 miles but the engine still has nearly stock compression and runs well.

***** This job was a bit much. My '96 Jeep Grand Cherokee is at 249,000 and counting. This daily driver's V8 engine is the best. Notice that I have no repair videos on that engine.

Great video, I'm about to be starting the same job on mine and after watching this it reminded me I forgot a few parts like new hoses and Tstat. How long did the whole job take you to do?
@A_Renaissance_Man9 жыл бұрын
billy mccabe Well ... I wasted a couple of hours taking some parts off that were not necessary. The condenser/radiator separator strip tricked me and I thought I had to a lot more work to do than necessary. Once I ran my hand down the strip to separate them the job went quickly. I could do this again in about 4-5 hours.
@mcearl80739 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I'm gonna probably do mine next weekend, I'm going to do the starter while I'm at it since it occasionally requires a tap to the solenoid to start. Thanks again for the video, KZbin has made car repairs a lot easier than they used to be.

oooHH I am so new at working on my car... Ok so I have a 94 jeep grand cherokee v-8 ltd.. Am I understanding you correctly when I say that I dont have to take off the radiator condenser and separator strip to replace the water pump? Ive only been doing this for about 4 years. and I really need the jeep to run after I do this ... So is there anything I need to watch out for or just a few pointers..:)

Hey brother! Your video was amazingly helpful. I am having issues getting the lower radiator hose off of my 95. It's way underneath of a bunch of stuff kind of like your bypass hose was. Any advice for getting that off?
@A_Renaissance_Man8 жыл бұрын
I recommend buying a new one and cutting the old one off. Take a straight edge and cut along the length of the nipple and peel it off like a banana.

@@noahbasara8529 climb underneath, there is a plastic shroud that is held in by 4 plastic push in things, get that off and you will have easier access to that clamp. hope you have finished this repair by now but in case anyone else was wondering. also i didn't have to take the fan off, i am only working on the radiator. once you get the shroud loose you can kind of finagle it out of the way.

What website did you order your radiator...and what tools are you use...?
@A_Renaissance_Man4 жыл бұрын
Radiator.com was the web site. They delivered from a local shop within the hour. Ended up just calling them. That was quicker like I said, one hour. No special tools were needed. Sockets and pliers. I changed the water pump too. Because the system was drained and it gave me more room.
