I have a 94 Toyota Pickup with the 22RE with 167,000 miles. When in bought it, it had an overheating problem and it overheated all the time. I eventually fixed it after replacing the water pump but the engine still runs like brand new. No blown head gaskets, no warped or cracked heads, no nothing. The 22RE is one of the most durable engines ever made, and arguably one of the best engines Toyota ever made. Sure they are not too powerful, but they have good low end torque, they can take abuse and still run, and they still return decent fuel economy. I manage to get 26 MPG cruising on the highway. The transmission in mine is a 5-speed manual, which are about as durable as the engine. I'm betting you could probably hook a 350 Chevy V8 to it and won't have a problem. It shifts smooth, and it is easy to drive. I did have to replace the clutch and flywheel with a more heavy duty Marlin Crawler clutch and pressure plate since I use my truck to haul heavy loads. Working on the car is very easy. There is a ton of space under the hood to replace components and parts. No need to pull the engine out to change a spark plug. The interior is much like you would expect from a 90s Pickup truck. It is pretty plain and it's not the most luxurious vehicle in the world. It has the basics like a radio and AC but that's pretty much it. There isn't some computer holding your hand and telling you how to drive, no unintuitive and unresponsive touch screens and a million buttons all over the dashboard. It is a very simple basic truck, and honestly, that's how I like it. It has the bucket seat that is on par with the era, has manual windows and even a smoker window which is something you don't see anymore unfortunately. My truck is not 4WD but I know they were a favorite for off-roaders. The outside is actually made out of metal. Yes, I said metal. If you get a ding here and there, it's easy to pop a dent out and pound it back into shape. The bumper is a real steel bumper, not some plastic foam thing bulging out the front of the vehicle. The drivetrain is simple. There are very little electronics in the car and what is there is very basic and easy to fix. The only real electronics in the car is the computer for the fuel injection. That's it! Everything else is completely analog. When you use the turn signal in a modern car, there is no electronic relay switch clicking away that lets you know your signal's on. Rather there is actually a speaker that makes the audible clicking sound to tell you it is on. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The are only a things I don't like about the old Toyota Pickup trucks. -the engines are pretty underpowered. By 1994, these trucks with the 22RE only made a measly 114 HP, which is quite low for a 2.4 L. But these trucks were never designed to be powerhouses. They were also never designed to tow anything over 2000lbs. They were designed to work and work and last forever. And although they aren't very powerful, they can do a lot more than what many people think a little pickup truck like this can do. -Some parts are getting hard to find. This is just a fact with older vehicles in general. The old brittle plastic parts tend to snap like glass and can cost a a lot to get a replacement part, assuming you find one. -The ride quality isn't the best but is tolerable. You must understand that this is a pickup truck from the 90s, so don't expect luxury like the cushiony trucks made today. It handles pretty good around corners for a pickup truck and has a stiff suspension, but the bench seat isn't really the best choice when it comes to comfort. But like I said, it is still tolerable to drive for extended periods of time. All of these issues should not all be a deal breaker as these issues are pretty negligible. The things I love about the old Toyota Pickup trucks...there's a lot of them. -It is a rather small narrow truck, and parking is really easy. -The visibility is outstanding since there are no giant columns around the windows abstracting your view. The steering is so easy and not very numb and the turning radius is very good. Combined with the great visibility and you can back the truck up anywhere. -the durability is the truck, the engine and transmission. They don't have problems often and when they do, they are usually pretty minor and easy to fix. The durability of the truck lends its hand to having a cast iron bock with aluminum heads, a very simple SOHC valve train, timing chain (no timing belts to worry about, a simple distributer ignition setup, and probably a whole bunch of other stuff I can't even think about. -working on this car is very easy. Lots of room under the hood and you don't need fancy tools either. Even the interior is held on by Phillips screws. -making adjustments to the car is easy. Even something as simple as adjusting the headlights is a no brainer. Try doing that on a modern car. -Everything is simple. No needless electronic bells and whistles to get in the way and distract you from your driving experience. No more electronics that can potentially fail and cost a fortune to repair. -I can scan the car's trouble codes without a scanner. All you have to do is connect two leads on the terminal and it blinks the codes on the dashboard. The codes it gives are pretty vague but it at least gives you a general idea of what to fix. -It is a very forgiving truck to drive. It is easy to learn how to drive stick. I taught my sister how to drive stick in this truck and now she can do it with her eyes closed (not literally. Haha). -It has decent fuel economy. I am able to get around 23 MPG city and 28 MPG highway with an average of 25 MPG. That is very good for a truck. -Handling is good for a pickup truck. It can corner well without feeling like you are going to roll over like in a lot of pickup trucks. -There are no electronic systems that get in the way of the driving experience. There is no ABS, no traction control, no airbags, and no fly-by-wire systems that don't always obey your commands. It is just you and the truck, and the driver is in full control over what the truck will do. Sure not having safety systems can concern some people, but as long as you drive defensively and logically, you should be fine. This is not like your modern truck that has to hold your hand and tell you how you should drive. I love my old Toyota Pickup. They will last forever if you take care of them. I plan on running mine until it literally falls apart, and even then the drivetrain might still be working! The only issue these trucks have is rust. The frames on these trucks tend to rust from the inside out, so it is really important to keep a close eye on the frame and patch bad spots as soon as possible. It is well worth it since these trucks are getting increasingly harder to find and their value is increasing.

What about parts on these? I bought a 2001 Nissan and finally sold it because I kept dumping money in it but then I needed a new engine. Nissan dealer said you can't get them anymore. I called Jasper they said they don't do those engines. Called a local Nissan repair center and they said they can't even get those engines and rebuilding is an issue and advice dumping the truck. I can buy a 95 Toyota Tacoma 5 speed that has been in our family since 97 but has been sitting for the past few years. The seat is worn slap out but there is no rust on the frame. I just don't want to run into part issues and having to go to the junkyard. It has 250,000 miles on it and is the basic trim level with roll-up windows manual locks the whole basic set up! Any advice on this?

I had a 91 Toyota pickup with the 22re in it, it was a manual, and it was the strongest truck I’ve ever owned. I’ve pulled a 2003 Chevy 3500 with a duramax lifted on a 12 inch lift for over 13 miles and there was no hesitation. I drove over 635 miles on two fills. If I could do anything to get my truck back I would. My advice is to never ever sell your 22re.

I have a 94 Hilux 4X4 with a V6 that I purchased new in Guam in 94. It has about 96K miles on it. Drove it in Guam, Hawaii and now in Florida. Still starts every time. Has the original Forest Green paint and, since it was manufactured in Japan, the large Toyota decal on the tail gate. Came standard with 31" wheels, single cab. Before this one I had a 90 Hilux with a 4 cylinder but a typhoon in 93 chewed up the paint so I sold it in Guam.

I just purchased a base model 22RE with an automatic transmision, 187,000 miles. It runs well, shifts as it should, and the body is pretty good. I am changing out the suspension bushings and the exhaust, and it should ride very well and sound even better once all is completed. Thank you for the video and the encouragement.

I bought a 93 pup in 2004 151k miles, gave it to my son 2013 and traded it back a month ago for a f150. 225k now but still rips! I am currently working on all the little fixes like a new seat belt, door latches, and window cranks, but it really held together well with abuse from a spoiled little shit. Love my truck!

I bought a 94 from a buddy after he wrecked the front end about 6 years ago. I have gave him a grand for it with 165k miles on it and have driven out since up to 297k with nothing but scheduled maintenance. The 22RE with 4wd will pull a house down or climb the walls if need be. I've been offered $3500 for it but won't sell since I know I'll never have a real Yoda again if I do.

Giving my daughter my 2009 Honda Accord Coupe for her birthday and I’ve always wanted a Toyota Tacoma. It’s my dream truck but no way I’m spending a small fortune on one. Mine was not well cared for so there was a need....I am upgrading a lot if stuff with sr5 / 4Runner parts, and also modifying the engine > stroker crank ,headers, better cam, heaby flywheel and stsge 3 clutch...and yes mileage will still be good but much better torque and excellent power going thru the Texas HillCountry on I10....

Best if the best little trucks I own 3 little 22R right now. A 1988 Toyota pick up extended little cab long bed carburetor and a 1992 Toyota pick up with camper and I just got another 1991 Toyota pick up for $500 runs like new but body is kind of bad shape. I've had a Dodge, a Ford, and s 94 toyota. The Toyota wins. The fit and finish, the quality of the body steel, stellar. Torquey and well balanced motor (slowly) revs to the moon. It's just fun to drive. The 80s era spaghetti tangle of vacuum tubing and smog hardware is a bit annoying. Hard to go up against the next generation though. Same light weight with an extra 50hp in those early Tacomas. (I prefer the 94 body style) The 94 has an eager personality.

Toyota followed what they thought America wanted from listening to fools who wouldn't even own a mini truck to begin with, that's why they gained 1000 pounds in their second generation Tacoma's. I've owned my 1994 pickup since 1999 and yes it will haul just fine. I've hauled campers across the entire coast. My fuel went down to about 19 mpg hauling a camper but I get 32 mpg with out the camper but not until I started using Mobil 1 and a K&N air filter. It did get 28 before those two changes when I first got it. All of my maintenance was routine, like 3 sets of tires, 3 batteries, many oil changes, couple tune ups, timing chain, water pump, master brake cylinder, and the only hard item was a head gasket at 200k because a head bolt broke. Not a lot of maintenance for having it 20+ years but I do intend to have it for the next 20 years as well. My 2014 4wd Tacoma only gets 21 mpg which is a bit of a disappointment after 32 with my mini truck. I usually get bored of a vehicle but not my 94 pickup, it is the greatest truck ever built.

I’ve owned 3 Toyota trucks all with the 2rz or 3rz. A 96 Tacoma regular cab auto little pickup and a 95 standard 5 speed. Then a 5 speed 3rz four cylinder T-100 regular cab built in Japan in 95. All those trucks are great but here’s where it all goes down hill. Size the trucks are great on gas because they’re light. Lightness is great for gas but not for being run over by a full sized Tundra. Safety is and over the years been put ahead of fuel. Then comes gadgets. Plastic everything push button start..tv screens, navigation power everything when can I drive not the computer lol... the future killed the little taco so find yourself one and take care of it and never sell unless it’s to a friend

I'm 18 and have a 2001 Silverado and I'm thinking about selling it and getting one of these. Definitely not as big or powerful as the Silverado (don't get me wrong I love the Silverados) but when I getting started off on my own the difference between 17mpg and 27mpg is huge.

hard to get good gas mileage in a pickup. These old trucks were pretty good on gas. Either one of these or a diesel. Diesel does pretty good for the weight they are but these are much better on gas.
