In this video I have a look at a 1995 Geo Prism that was dropped off with a customer complaint of no cruise control. Service data lead us right to the problem and it was a no parts required fix for this fella. Ivan would be proud!

I had Corolla 94 1,3i manual and it had 64 kW=88 HP, Ok no "torks". This 1,8 manual, if it's not detuned for US, should be quicker than Golf 3 Gti and serious sleeper which embarrases Honda boys at lights:)

@@2zer084 Given my 1,3 was 64Kw, I thought 1,8 could have been close to 100kW not HP. As euro 1,6 was already 84 kw=110HP. But US 1,8 was probably detuned for low end torque, and nicer drivability, not max torque at 4000 rpm. And I was talking about manuals, not slushboxes.

The fact this car is still going in upstate ny is blowing my mind. Looks great too. I guess the fact that this person is paying to fix the cruise means they really care about this thing and that’s why it’s still going. Crazy to me.

I had a 99 corolla (same as prizm) that was the absolute best daily beater I've ever had. Thing was super cheap and easy to do maintenance on. It had the 1ZZ-FE motor which was great. It had 200k on the odometer when I got it, and I sold it with 413k, still in great running condition. I see the guy around town once in awhile, thing is still kicking. I'd have kept it, but needed 4wd after moving to the Maine woods.

The first car I ever drove with cruise I had to try it, was an after market system, pushed the button to turn it on and the car immediately accelerated full throttle, hit the brake but it kept going...... sheer panic trying to work out how to turn it off, I was in town at the time, 30mph limit and the cruise was set to 80 I later found out, whoever fitted it bypassed the brake switches. It was years before I tried another one, now would be without it. Good fix Eric.

Once again, Eric shows why you approach diagnosing a failure systematically. I have a 2000 Porsche Boxster that the cruise control went out. Thought it was going to be a new module (for several hundred dollars) but as I worked through the failure, it turned out it was the cruise control indicator light bulb in the dash burned out which disables the entire system. Bulb was less than $1 (which I happened to have on hand anyway). Again, work and diagnose the failure. Don't guess. Thanks again Mr. O.

When I learned to drive manual transmissions were "standard" and you paid a line-item price for the upgrade to an automatic. My family owned three cars, Mom's, Dad's, and a beater for the two (then three) driving kids. All three were manual transmissions. Our house was on a street with three ways out of the neighborhood: all three ended at Stop Signs at the top of short, steep, upgrades. That was just the lay of the land. It was Michigan, deep in the snow belt. I, and my siblings, learned to operate a clutch with incredible precision and accuracy. We had no choice. Starting on a showy up slope is not a problem for me. I could steel this car in a flash.

Brings back memories. Cool driving there, holding a camera and shifting manual gear, all you are missing is a burger and a drink 🙂. That car looks mint, does not look like it is from your normal NY rust area. I had a 95 Corolla DX back then, gone now, brother-in-law totaled it. I still have the strut tower brace for it, to the owner of this Prism wants it let me know, you can have it for free.

My morning wasn’t going so well; just blew a couple holes in an almost paper thin meticulously coped tube, attempting to weld it to a heavy $30+ stainless nut. So I decided to take a break and was pleasantly surprised by another of your excellent diagnostic videos. I think my day has just gotten better. Thank you.

@@briandeschene8424 Thank you, you are correct, this is something that will require courage and perseverance. The two pieces separately want about a 50 amp spread to make a puddle. I think I’ll be spending most of my time on that nut hoping a little bit of the puddle will spill over onto the tube.

Good find! I probably would have replaced the switch anyway for good measure, honestly. I wouldn't want to risk the chance that the switch is indeed failing with an intermittant fault.

Eric, Great video/fix - thank you. Setup in my 05 Focus 5-speed is very similar. SMA#1 Paul (in MA) ps got to add frighole to the list of Eric O isms pps They have the wrong master cylinder. The one for ABS has the connector on the passenger side and the one for non ABS has it on the driver side.

I just had a similar deal with the Burke switch on my wife’s discovery. I thought I needed a new one but I just cleaned it up with de-oxit and adjusted the plunger and it works like new. Getting to it was an adventure. I didn’t think I could bend like that.

Owned a Kia Rondo first gen from 2008 to 2012. No cruise due to brake light switch was an issue. Great video as always Eric O. Learned to drive a manual on a 1985 Corolla. Not my favorite car ever but up there. Tough little thing, was my father’s and he took it care very passingly at best. Still lived well into 300km. The rust from Nova Scotia took it back.

My Mother used to smell natural gas often. We were on vacation on a Florida island in a condo and she smelled nat gas. My father and I checked it out and discovered that nat gas had never been piped to the island and everything was total electric. We never let her forget that.

A manual E10 Toyota is a rare bird these days! My first car was a '93 wagon, power nothing, SAME cruise setup though, and a bolt action. I wish I could find another one!
