95% Hydrogen Peroxide - Vacuum Distillation!

In this video I demonstrate how to preform a vacuum distillation to purify 35% hydrogen peroxide to around 95% concentration. This is a very powerful oxidizer which may be explored as a liquid rocket propellant in a future project. If you enjoyed this video, check out some of my others and drop a like and subscribe for more!
Some activities demonstrated in this video may be dangerous to replicate and should NOT be attempted by individuals at home. While chemistry is very enjoyable, safety must always be number one concern and doing research is very important before trying the reactions themselves. This video is solely intended for educational purposes and should not be replicated in any way shape or form at home.

I am sure Tom Us not too afraid, I mean he made liquid O3. But Tom makes explosive compounds and none of the organic peroxide variety, he likes the nitros and azide energetics so no real use for 95% H2O2

Great demonstration, and glad you're still putting out content. I've achieved 65% from 3% by just pouring several liters of dollar store peroxide into shallow plastic gladware type trays and evaporating at room temp for weeks. Less decomp. I do it in an unoccupied room to keep the dust down. It still has the stabilizers, but you could evaporate it down to 1/3 the original volume, which is still only about 9%, then distill it safely to remove the stabilizer, then evaporate it the rest of the way down to the desired concentration.

To enhance evaporation considerably, get a plant seedling warming mat and place under the container. It doesn’t affect temperature appreciably, but accelerates evaporation quite a bit.

Holy crap you're back!! Nice to see this man, I love your content. Also this terrifies the f**k out of me - I haven't even hit play yet. But a couple weeks back I distilled some isopropyl that had H2O2 contamination (that I was unaware of), and had a pretty hectic explosion in the lab. Very curious to see what your approach is when I hit play!

Ok, just watched, still incredibly terrified haha. My issue definitely came down to heat I think - the iso/peroxide mix wasn't boiled under vacuum, and the hotplate I used not only gets incredibly hot and had a pretty faulty temperature control, but also had a 15mm thick ceramic plate - which held a lot of heat for a while after turning it off.

Hey, awesome! Glad to see a new upload, great timing! I am starting to do "Super Science Sundays" with my 7 year old son and nothing holds a kids attention better than vigorous exothermic reactions. It sure is a pain not being able to get the reagents that are banned for various reasons here in Canada, how am I supposed to inspire a life long interest in chemistry without things like potassium permanganate. I barely know enough chemistry to make soap but I can follow instructions and I only need to stay a week ahead of the kid for him to think I know what I am doing. I hope to see more videos in the future but thanks for the library of content already here, it will be essential for the next few years.

If water freezes first up until about 60% then the ice should be removed as it's water But if it's past 65%, then the hydrogen peroxide freezes first and should be placed in a separate container Along with the liquid from prior enrichment.... Perhaps I'm not understanding it correctly But could this be used to enrich it the rest of the way to 95%?

why sulfuric acid to grease the seals? would other substances oxidize?
@Leadvest
@Leadvest Жыл бұрын
Yes that's possible, but sulfuric acid is used to seal glassware joints more generally than just in oxidizing atmospheres.
@synthesizer8026
@synthesizer8026 Жыл бұрын
Part of the reason is if sulfuric acid get into a reaction, in most cases it will do nothing as it is used as a catalyst in many Organic Reactions but greases even the DuPont stuff will affect your reactions, it has a boiling point if over 300C and most reactions specially under vacuum like in this case are far below that temp, many greases will be useless in higher temps, possibly dripping into your reaction flask. In the case of this reaction, the mixture of peroxide and Sulfuric acid will produce Caro's Acid which is minimal risk as water boils at 100C well as well just a drop of the acid is needed per joint

Why the x2 condensers? Is it to increase the surface area ?
@synthesizer8026
@synthesizer8026 Жыл бұрын
The second condenser isn't absolutely necessary since he is likely not keeping the water, but it ensures all the water condenses helping to track progress allowing him to see how much water has passed over. In theory, no condenser is needed, not even the vigreux, however you will likely lose some H2O2 to evaporation the vigreux will allow it to fractionated, as well, having an open vessel could allow dust in which may decompose the peroxide and possibly at higher Conc. cause explosion.

Glad to see you back, doing your thing. When someone disappears ìts sometimes just not good. So I'm glad you are okay. Keep it up!! Hey btw, one thing NOBODY else has done is enough different kinds of transition metal complexes. They all do nickel hydrazine nitrate or perchlorate or copper tetraamine or tetrazoles (on the energetics). But I read you can do magnesium, manganese, Cobalt, zinc and even cadmium hydrazine too. also, I just want to see what all the colors might be with that and even all the other amines, even hydroxylamine and ethylenediamine. It would be interesting.
