I knew an old Kwik Way salesman. Its too bad hes been gone for many years, he would have known everything about your machine. I was 18 - 20 at the time, and he ran a machine shop and parts store. Im 67 now, so that was many yrs ago! I have used Kwik Way valve grinders, but I own a Sioux machine. Interesting! Good luck!

Your valve grinder also is for refacing rockers and cam followers… That’s a nice old machine I like the old machines built to last

Those stoppers are for setting the centre of cam followers/lifters to grind them and for grinding rockers

What a mind of the people that designed all these attachments / machine must have had. And this was all done without computers, just imagination and a hundred years ago. People were brilliant even back then.

I couldn't agree more! I heard a good joke the other day,,, "So you think you're smarter than people 50 years ago? Back then your car manual showed you how to adjust the valves. Todays manuals tell you not to drink the stuff in the battery"

Eagle belting sells many shapes of urethane belting that you buy in 100 foot box and there’s a melting tool you use it. You cut it and melt it together. The beauty of using their belt is you don’t have to disassemble the whole machine to install a one piece O-ring belt, and they have v belts and square belts

every cool machine possibly a belt may go on around the outside of the roller with the little handle and holds tension on the valve stem. Also you can cut the round rubber belt on a 45 degree angle then heat both ends between the a flame an melt the seem together I have a small lathe that uses a similar round belt.

I had serviced a similar valve grinder in here in the shop awhile back, that round belt was leather and held together with a single hog ring. I have a very similar machine for reamer grinding, probably around the same age.
@LappemountainlivingАй бұрын
Interesting! I had no idea. Kind of makes sense though. There is a leather flat belt on the machine. I've ordered some 6mm round polyurethane and seeing how the skipping rope did so well I'm hoping the poly will be a permanent solution. Thanks for watching.

There is flat belt maker in Wisconsin that will custom flat belts for machines. I forgot their name.
@rickhand8228Ай бұрын
Regarding the "mystery device", Is there a chance the belt could go around the outside of both of the fixed pulleys AND around the third pulley? The idler pulley does appear to have a lot of travel. That would explain the discoloration on the pulleys and still trap a valve stem between the three rollers without interference from the belt. Not the most elegant setup for sure!
@LappemountainlivingАй бұрын
Brilliant! I had the same thought after making the video but still wasn't sure. Then a viewer sent me a link to a picture of a complete unit showing exactly that. Good on you for solving the "mystery device"! Link to pic below. Cheers! www.picclickimg.com/images/g/LxAAAOSw9nlmkqlO/s-l1600.jpg

Andy. The placard on the machine says something about backing off reamers (whatever that is) so probably good for sharpening various machine cutters.

I would suggest finding overhaul manuals for very early 20’s 30’s 40’s engines and look at how the valve and lifter specifications are worded. You will find that some engines had multiple valve head angles and matching multi angle seats ground on both the valve and the seat in the head or block. The tappet/follower face of the valve would also be faced to a slight angle, usually less than a .5 degree angle to rotate the valve. Also the cam follower face was angle ground to .5 degrees to rotate the follower with the cam being ground to the matching angle. Assuming this was a full service valve facing machine, as one other commented grinding reamers for valve guides and lifter/follower bores would have been a function, along with a not seen attachment for facing/regrinding rockers and lever style cam followers, I also suspect that with some imagination valve seat cutters could be re faced on this machine as well. Sometimes the various engine manuals of the periods showed the valves or sundry components being serviced which is far more informative than the machine’s manual. This is a true gem, and I hope you can fully utilize it as it was intended. This also with care could perform a lot of other functions, let your imagination go wild. Take care and play safe.
@theoldstationhandАй бұрын
@@pebrede good suggestion, I'm gonna dig out some of my old manuals.
@jacquespoirier9071Ай бұрын
it is an cylindrical grinding machine with a provision for valve grinding, To what I see, the use is limited to your imagination, you can have to fabricate some attachements to widen the use but it can do it never scrap that machine.

@camillosteussАй бұрын
The 3 wheels mechanism looks more like a centerless grinder attachment of sorts... Not 100%, but it damn sure looks intended to hold and likely power turn a ground shaft between the 3 rollers by the friction of the grip and the apparent drive mechanism that feeds into the casting holding the rollers, regardless of the reason behind it`s current ``stationary`` condition... A damn cool machine to be sure... Me likey! Not that i want one, i have quite a few different grinders that need service and an overhaul, so until those are done, i`m good on grinders... But it is a cute little machine! Best regards! Steuss

If you need / want to replace some of those flat belts; I've bought belts from this guy, great guy to deal with and quite reasonable pricing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHuXeXuVa7J9mas Mystery attachment, just a guess: may be for re-grinding the crown on a valve lifter - crown runs on the cam lobe, makes the lifter rotate - it is a wear point.
@LappemountainlivingАй бұрын
Thanks for the link. Good to know where to find flat belts at a reasonable price. Thanks for watching!
@phlodelАй бұрын
I know one thing, those belts do need guards, I'm not a safety guy, I'm the guy who's lucky to retire with fingers after a life of playing with machines. A lot of these fine, old machines have to be scrapped because they don't meet safety standards.
@LappemountainlivingАй бұрын
Good to know. I plan on making some guards once I figure out what they looked like. I would like the guards to look as original as possible. Thanks for the comment!
@phlodelАй бұрын
@@Lappemountainliving Many years ago, I worked fabricating machinery. My boss, Bob Williams, used to say, "Guards are like clothes on the machine Good guards make the machine look good." Face it, no matter what the machine is, we want it to look good. I'll bet the original guards were just lovely.
@normcameron2316Ай бұрын
What a great old machine. I'm thinking that besides grinding valve face: - you would also grind the end of the valve stem to clean it up. - maybe grind the valve lifter face a bit crowned - maybe grind the curved rocker arm faces Just looking at the machine and all the moving parts and actions, a gut feeling. As for the drive belt, a big rubber O-ring of the right length and cross section made of 90 Durometer nitrile is a suggestion. 60 Durometer is softer, more flexible. They can both be bought in bulk, cut to length and end glued together with crazy glue. Good luck. amazing machine.
@LappemountainlivingАй бұрын
Thanks for the great comment and suggestions. I've ordered 10m of 6mm polyurethane. They claim it's meant for drive belts. Thanks for watching! Cheers!
@normcameron2316Ай бұрын
@@Lappemountainliving 10m should be enough. I don't know what glue to use on polyU. Whatever glue, use a scarf joint to increase surface area, might help. I will bet originally that machine had leather cord, like my Grandmother's Singer sewing machine. Probably about same vintage.
@LappemountainlivingАй бұрын
The manufacture recommends welding the ends together with a soldering iron. They claim the joint is right strong. They recommend a butt joint but I can see the advantage of a scarf joint.
@normcameron2316Ай бұрын
@@Lappemountainliving Go for the weld. What is the worst can happen? You have lots of material.:) Sometimes we just need to play...I mean experiment. Something in the back of my head says poly doesn't take glue well. A welded scarf joint would be rigid, wouldn't go round pulleys well. Let me know what happens please. Fascinating machine.
