Hi there, I love your expressions, and just getting into this myself, having a blast! Can you please share with me in your opinion, what sets the ice dye and liquid dye apart? And what is the difference between dying a piece when wet or dry?

Liquid = color bleed/blend between the dyes. Ice Dye = color bleed/blend between the dyes and within the dyes. There are about 20 "primary" dye colors that are used to create the remainder of the colors that are available in Procion dyes. If you ice dye with one of the "primary" colors, you'll have similar results to that of liquid dying a dry shirt. If you ice dye with any of the other colors that are blended, the dyes will separate at a different rate of speed/distance as the ice melts, resulting in a greater variation of color/depth that you can't achieve with liquid dyeing. For example, some of the black dyes include various yellows/blues as base colors , so you'll actually end up with some yellow/blue separation with those black dyes.

Thanks for your input! Yes I'm loving the mystery of ice dye so much since you don't quite know what your going to get. I have yet to blend the 2 techniques. I'm using Darma procion, I'll see if I can find their primaries, since the results with ice are incredibly different if they are mixed into one color. Can you please share any tips on dyeing colour where it would be white where tied? I love this look but not sure how.. I'm thinking it would involve looser tied fabric, then soaking to get the dye in there, and then proceed to add the other colour to the other areas?

The outer design of that shirt is tie dyed. The rest of the design looks like it's air-brushed.

How would I create the marbled effect without the accordion? Thanks!

The easiest is to just scrunch up the fabric and hold it in place with rubber bands. Possibly dye the top with a liquid light grey color and it in a container of black dye to let it soak up the dye for 12-18 hours. Rinse, wash, dry, and you should have a marbled effect across the whole shirt.

You can, and many people use twine, dental floss, etc.; but, it's much easier to use sinew and the results are far more consistent.

How do you thicken your dyes?

I use guar gum; but, most people use sodium alginate. The ratio's vary depending on the thickness you're trying to achieve; but, it's generally around 1/8 tsp of guar gum to anywhere from 4-8 ounces of water.

It's sinew. I use flat, waxed, artificial sinew that I buy in 300 yard spools from Amazon. The price varies between $12.00 to $24.00 depending on brand/seller, color of the sinew, etc.

How come your dyes don't bubble up on the fabric and then run everywhere. They're so controlled. Do you use thickened dye.

I dye fabric that's damp - so it wont' "bubble" due to surface tension. In the case of this video, the primary colors are thickened as well to be able to maintain a narrow line. If it's any consolation, the washout uses less than 2 gallons per shirt - less than what's used by flushing the toilet twice.
