Fleet mechanic here. Excellent video. Just about every mechanic I know struggles with 5 volt supply and j1939 problems , including myself. Just applied the first step to a Cummins diesel I was working on today. I found the problem in 5 minutes. Same approach I use for j1939 issues , just never used it for 5 volt supply. Again, excellent video.

Thanks for the video! I am dealing with a rainstorm damaged system. Replaced fuseblock, gem, pcm, alternator, starter, and starter relay. Pcm was the last purchase and was not necessary. I replaced the alternator due to high frequency signal disrupting the CPS. After replacing I still have other codes for high voltage/malfunction for a few circuits. Turns out they all share 5v ref. All wires have .0, .1 ohms resistance. All wires show 5.05 volts. Chasing this down has driven me partially insane still love this stuff though.

Best overall view of this process I’ve seen yet. Thanks for providing a plan of attack. I currently am experiencing a cranks but will not start situation with no spark, and cannot hear the fuel pump running. Furthermore my scanner says “No communication with PCM.” Been watching ScannerDanner where I first learned of the 5v reference circuit. His videos are good but this video lays it out better. I will be applying this troubleshooting sequence today on my old 98 Dodge Ran 1500.

There are alot of viewers with mental learning disabilities and they really want to learn how to read, understand and comprehend electrical wiring diagrams but they struggle to learn it because it has to be broken down like if it was being taught to kids so the minds of the mental learning disabled can get a good grasp on it and comprehension. Excellent job. The PCM sends out 5v to each sensor and reviews the reply/returning voltage. Based on the returning voltage, the PCM determines something is wrong and issues a DTC & turns on the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT so the driver takes it to the dealer and gets fleeced.

Great easy to understand video, very helpful. I have a 09 Silverado, engine went into limp mode , P0641 code. Open circuit. After sitting overnight I took my scan tool and deleted the code. I started it and everything works fine. However I am leery about driving it home as I have to go on a main road with a lot of traffic and no shoulder to pull off. Could a sensor have an intermittent failure or is it more likely a wiring problem?

I just replaced timing chains on a 3.6L GM (09 Acadia) and now I have a cam/crank out of sync code. I was very careful about the chains being right on every tooth. I know it probably jumped a tooth at the first startup, but I wanted to check sensors before I tore apart completely and recheck the chains and tensioners.

@@ReignitedAuto So I'm finding out! I also did the cam phasers and oil pump while I was in there, but who knows. Totally agree, in fact, putting new parts on only aggravates the issue because now you have introduced new variables to the scenario. Also while installing new parts you might inadvertently nudge a connector that fixes the issue for a short time. No doubt about it these types of electrical issues are a nightmare!

Well, I did the testing. The first thing was that the Haynes manual showed two grey (5V REF) cables at the PCM, one going to the TPS not touching the other one. And the second grey cable to the EGR and MAP sensor. Oh, and the numbers in the manual did not coincide with the numbers at the computer plug, so I did a continuity test and the grey color was good to go. At first, I got the 5V on the first test, then I never saw it. Well, I went ahead with the other test and the continuity test came ok. So, without the 5V I couldn't verify if the sensor were bad..., I think. So, I should be the PCM, correct? I will give another try tomorrow on the first step, just in case. Any input at this point will be more than appreciated. It is a 1999 Suburban with a 5.7L Engine. Fuses are good to go, relays. Before all this testing, I got spark, fuel pressure, and compression. Still I went and changed things like Fuel Pump, Injector Spider, Distributor, Crank and Camshaft sensor. Battery is charged and I always keep a charger close by and check the voltage. BTW, this truck died in the driveway, for the lack us use, my best guess. I am wondering why the two grey 5 Volts Grey cables at the PCM. I also went ahead and checked continuity at the plug and there was none as the diagram. Anyways, Thanks for the great video. It really helps understand this. I am even motivated to keep digging.

Thank you for your video and i learn a lot from it. but there is one thing i would like to ask about it and i will be very appreciate if you can answer my question. so when 5 reference voltage short to ground as example #4 on the board, if we unplug every sensor i don't think this is the best way to check the short to ground for 5vref. what if there is a short to ground after that 5v reference voltage splice, for example. the 5v reference vlotage wire of the fuel rail pressure sensor is shorted to ground bewteen the splice and the sensor. after we unplug all the connectors, we still will have resistence reading from pin37 to ground. what i will do is disconnect each terminal from the splice. i will disconnect terminal for pin 37 in that splice first and check the resistence between that "main" 5vref terminal and ground. if i get the reading, that means i have short to ground problem between pin 37 and main 5vref terminal in the main wire, if i dont get the reading, i will put the terminal back, put one multi meter pin on the main 5vref terminal and the other pin on the chassis ground and start to pull out each terminal for the sensors until i loss the resistence reading. plz let me know am i right or wrong, i will be very appreciate for your help. thank you very much.

Hi, i have 2007 fj cruiser. The engine light are on and others light too. Have P-2743 code transmission fluid temperature or B circuit high. I change the transmission oil, filter and the whole wire thar has two tft sensor and the light continue on. How I can verify the wires and the codutuivity if the cables are under the car and the computer are inside the car.

Thanks for the video! I'm having an issue with my 2009 2500hd and have a 12v on the 5 volt reference circuit on the MAF. I have swapped a cammed LS3 into the truck and it ran mint after the factory truck ECU was tuned for the engine. Then I got poor idle and poor power and drivablity. P0102 code. Bad ground?

If you've got 12v battery power on a 5v reference circuit then you've got another voltage circuit shorted to that one. There should never be 12v on a 5v circuit. 👍

I’m a diy mechanic. This is my first time watching your video and I am very very impress, very collegiate. You made this complex code very easy and simple to understand, love your teaching method. What I love most is your teaching and explaining on the board instead of during a video and watching you do it. I wish you would have shown how to perform short to ground/power but other than that I really enjoyed it.

Did you say how to troubleshoot the signal/ground circuit shorted? I listened 3 times and still don't know how to check for that other than to see melted wires. My guess is to check the continuity from each signal wire at the harness side to the battery. Much like you suggested on 3.

What about when the 5v reference has its own ground through the ECM? What's a good indicator that the circuit within the board, from sensor ground in to chassis ground out, is bad?

in the next step for your diagnostic when you are talking about an open before the split of 5V reference , the reference pin at the PCM should give us the 5v on the meter ! am i wrong ? thanks

My 5v reference wire shows 12v when back probing with the pcm connected. If I disconnect the pcm it drops down to 0v. I thought it was a short to power but if that was the case wouldn’t 12v always be present regardless if the pcm is connected or not?

Awesome video, how could I learn more about 5V reference circuits? Also, is reference voltage the same as signal voltage? Thanks!

The reference voltage is the voltage that comes into the sensor, the signal voltage is what comes out of the sensor and goes to the PCM 👍

Nice simple electrical explanation. I hate electrical!! I'm the "shotgun" guy. Start replacing sensors and hope it's the right one 😁. I can't tell you how many times I've heard people say it's the PCM. Mechanics as well without even doing any testing. 🤦
