The snow is melting again as I continue with building the kitchen and installing plumbing and electricity. I bake for the first time in the masonry heater, go for a hike to the ghost town and stack fire wood.

What I like about Martijn, is that he got all the old school skills like manual labor, but still is up-to-date with technology and quite tech savvy, the combo brings us a glimpse from the past with a touch of the new world tech.

Suggestion: design a wood cover for the basin … to be used as cover and cutting board. Add “legs” so cover may be moved to fit over gas stove area. Gives more usable space.

Most tiny homes or caravan homes use this strategy to add counter space. We built our own travel trailer and travelled extensively with 3 children for 15 years. The sink and cover made life much easier👍🏻🥰

We were able to purchase a wood insert cover for our sink. I am sure with his skills he could do that. There is one little hole to stick your finger through to pick it up. I also use that hole for juice to drain in sink. I love it.

true it´s very relaxing and beautiful. i have seen other KZbinrs do the same as martijn, idk if they got inspired by him or what, but it´s just not the same and the process is very slow. and also people tend to make everything more modern for a build like this. they don´t enjoy the nature like martijn. and i bet those people will just move after it´s done. living remote is hard unless you are pepared for it and enjoy nature

Martijn, your videos are always superb and I greatly enjoy them. About the white chicken's back of neck- I raised chickens for 40 years, and that is a sign it is being pecked by the brown chicken. Chickens sense weakness and her being attacked and weak causes the brown one to do this. You need a couple more chickens, preferably white, so the brown hen won't pick on this one.

Great episode, as usual, but today came with a special gift and I thank you for it. Towards the end, you were doing some sketches of your sink and kitchen lay-out and it flashed in my brainknob that I used to watch my dad (a civil engineer) doing some sketches dealing with hydraulics and being so impressed with the clean lines and perfect arcs. Since I was only around 5 at the time, it was quite amazing to me. Your artistic bent brought that back----albeit, 75 years later, lol. Love the fireplace and am still so pleased with your stonework to make it an intrinsic part of the house.

Yes - I thought it was extremely honest of Martijn to show us the redo of the kitchen - how many would admit to needing to do that ? And yet we have all been there at one time or another ! It also shows the best reason of all to use screws rather than nails to fix things together - you can always just unscrew that connection - it beats trying to get bent nails out of wood ! So many projects have little changes made because something didn't quite work out !

@@veronicaroach3667 FYI, Veronica, you "have to use screws" when affixing wooden cabinets to stone and masonry walls. You first need to drill holes into the stone wall for each screw to go into either a metal or plastic "Expander Sleeve" that you have to hammer into each hole you've drilled into the wall. Then, you attach the wooden cabinets with screws that go through the cabinet and into the expander sleeves that were hammered into the walls to receive the screws. As each screw goes into each corresponding expander sleeve, it "expands outward", locking the whole screw and sleeve into the stone wall. Martijn could easily use most of those same expander sleeves after he moves each cabinet over to make room for the Fridge. I hope that makes sense? Cheers and Happy Christmas!

Hey Martijn, I really loved this video. It’s so nice to see you pottering around the house after having worked your arse off for nearly two years. Last week you said you still had to do this and that, and then... decorating... I thought, wow, how fantastic is this, that you are finally at a point where you can actually say that! The stove is brilliant! I remember Johannes telling that at his house it’s a constant 18 degrees... that’s all you need to be comfortable! Central heating is so different from a woodstove, and by having worked outside all year through, I’m sure you got much more used to the cold anyway. It will be interesting to see how it’ll be when it really starts freezing. Great kitchen, the sink and the tap really fit in the baita. I’ve seen several nice modern rebuilds of baita’s, but your style really suits it so well. The books from the architect look great, you’ll probably find some usefull stuff in there (for future projects? :) You must be looking forward to going home for a bit... I just had this picture of you having friends and family over for Xmas, and making oliebollen and ouderwetse appelflappen... who knows next year...? Take care Martijn, as always already looking forward to the next video! 🎄

The sweet white chicken definitely does not feel well. She needs more contact to her human friend. She needs beeing hold and touched and talked to. In the house of my grandfather injured and ill chicken were allowed to come inside the house sometimes. They feel loved and accepted then and can heal easier. Those animals are are attached to their humans and are very sensitive and intelligent creatures.

You should add ventilation vents to down and upstairs. Vent for fresh air to downstairs, in worst case while you use the fire place the exchange air will be sucked in through the sewer pipes, also possible cracks in the walls will bring air inside and with that particles inside the walls will be in the air that you BREATH. Then another vent to upstairs to get the "bad"/moist air out of the house. Otherwise over time you will have problems with mold and also your own health is at risk, bad air quality can cause symptoms to your eyes, skin, heart, and respiratory system

Although you may already be planning to do so, I would recommend that you put a backsplash on the wall behind the kitchen counter, primarily to keep oil/grease from the stove splattering all over the stone walls. In time splattered grease would become unsightly, not to mention the staining of the wall. I would also put in some cabinets and use a LED light strip beneath to provide light for your food preparation and cooking endeavors, but I am sure this is on the list. Being in the cabin sure beats another winter in the tent huh? Be safe!

I don't think that I can find the words to tell you how completely perfect the stove is. It looks like it has always been part of the building, and that is no easy task. I am so glad that it's keeping you warm and that this year you have a place to live for the winter that isn't always threatening to fall in on you. It must be a huge relief to know that that massive chore is done. Kitchens and things like that evolve but that stove is a massive accomplishment. Kudos! May you and yours have a blessed season!

I enjoy every one of your videos each week and the way you produce your videos with minimal talk is also appealing. You must spend much time placing your cameras and editing your content. The sounds of the wind, cow and goat bells along with your chickens clucking makes your production so superior.

Martijn, you are an inspiration. You have probably become inured to hearing that. But know that the inspiration I have drawn from you over the past 8 months has had marked practical implications in my life. So this is how I will thank you: with a simple KZbin comment. Keep up the life changing work!

After two joy filled months of binge watching your channel most evenings, my husband and I are now all caught up and feel slightly bereft that we'll only able to watch one (wonderful) new episode a week! We've still got your specials to watch over the Christmas period like the first year recap and stone roof. Thank you for sharing your life with us through KZbin. I hope you have a safe roadtrip home to the Netherlands for Christmas with your family.

Good day Martijn, been with you from the beginning you should be really proud of what you have achieved. Love the exposed stone which brings me to a concern I have. The wall behind the cooktop will inevitably bet fat splashes etc on it which will be almost impossible to remove. If you installed a hinged cover it would cover the cooktop when not in use and protect the wall when cooking. Keep doing what most of us wish we could do.

Love everything about him and his channel! I learn and get ideas with every episode. I would however like to hear his reasoning why he chose to put the kitchen upstairs when the oven/fire is downstairs. I am absolutely NOT criticizing, I just love how his mind works and am sure that his reason will have me smackin my forehead! I grew up in Switzerland so this landscape makes my heart ache and I am so so thankful to have this channel. Thanks Martijn....

I'm just guessing, but carrying groceries - there are probably less steps outside & inside by having he kitchen upstairs? Another thought- the old "hot air rises, cold air falls," the lower level may be cooler in summer, where he plans to put the bedroom eventually, but probably nice to have a fire in winter ? 🤔

Dear Martijn, from my experiences (heating of houses with several types of stoves more than 20 years) it is really short time to heat the cabin with 2hrs fire. You need much more time to accumulate and absorb heat into the all walls (not only stones and walls around the stove). It would be better to close the air intake and do a longer fire, for half a day atleast (better longer), not so intensive... And then much more heat will be "stored" in the walls. Then, in next days you can do a shorter fires. But I think you will never heat the cabin enough with 2hrs fire 🫣
