Hey mike that's a nice grove of soft woods there. Beautiful with all the snow on them. I'm here in central pa and we only had snow squalls here. Barely even coated my lawn. I was hoping for 2or3 inches. I'm sure it will come soon enough. Great videos mike and melissa keep it up!!!!!👍

Wonderful....I love winter. Add 30 more inches of snow and subtract 5 hours of daylight and it will look like my back yard here in Fairbanks Alaska. I too have been cutting firewood (standing deadwood) this short afternoon. White (paper) birch / cottonwood / alder. A beautiful 40 lb. Lynx was watching me for a bit. Maybe hoping I'd scare up a bunny?

Hi Melissa and Mike. I am Jens from Denmark. I have been watching your channel for quite some time now and I love watching your way of living, quite envious of your lifestyle. Denmark isn’t bigger than Pennsylvania, I think your way of thinking is quite like us here in DK, embracing not excluding. What i especially like is your positive approach to life, no BS, you take it as it goes. The way you show your approach family life, the girls, Hunter - all the challenges we all are facing in life. Pad your self on the back, what you are doing is good, positive thinking is a good example for all of us to follow. Can’t wait for your upcoming videos.

I like winter, though it is a bit long in Northern Most Wisconsin. Working in the snow is at its worst , since everything is always wet. Gloves, pant legs, tractor seat and all make it miserable, but nothing happens on the couch. We had snow in October and it melted and we are snow free now. Cutting those pines will be a good thing and will make interesting interior finish. I approve of this message. Hope it is just a cold Motor Mike. Keep your pipes clean!

Great episode today Mike! I love your take on the environment. It is there, it will die, and so it should be used.....rather than left to the bugs! I live in Alabama, and so many companies, (Georgia Pacific, International Paper, etc.), go into an area of semi-virgin timber (hardwoods), mow them down like cutting the grass, then plant pines in their place, and call it, "replacing the forest!" They make commercials praising their replanting efforts! Bull-xxxxx! Down here, they cut hardwoods, and replace it with pines for the pulpwood industry! Paper! They convert forest....into paper! It breaks your heart. Properly managed, hardwood forest......should be harvested, and replaced with "hardwood forest"! My hat is off to you for using, and replacing (by letting nature takes it course) the environment that you live in, and cherish!! Keep setting a great example!! You don't have to replant it....., just let it replenish naturally without commercial interference!

Oh Mike that sure was a festive sort of day for you, and it also reminded me of something that my (now) late parents used to do this time of year, on a Sunday afternoon we would go for a walk in the local park and mum would pick some fallen twigs and some greater reed mace from a pond and would take it home and make Christmas decorations from them, but as you have some snow ❄️ and I have always loved woodland when the snow falls, as the woodland seems to come alive again if only for a short period of time. Hope you get over your cold soon and see you next time.

10:45 Nathan would put it on the mill to see what is in there. You might lose some at the top and bottom and even some on the edges, but there is good wood inside. Standing dead does not rot the same as on the ground. I have burned a lot as firewood and it is solid inside if it is standing most of the time. Now if all the bark is gone and the woodpeckers have it looking like swiss cheese, maybe not but yours looks good to me.

The original Christmas tree, the Norway produces strong, citrusy tips in the spring. They are large, plentiful and a natural choice for infusion or making spruce sugar. The tips are the true delicacy, but the tea is tasty as well. Strong, spicy and buttery, very rich in color and flavor. Another tip for what The Norway Spruce is good for. Also typically good for siding and dimensional lumber found at your home supply store.

That snow looks a little wet but a beautiful winter scene nonetheless. Hope we get some snow in January or February in Upstate South Carolina. In regards to the dead trees, if you can get them down safely, I don't think it would hurt to see if some wood is salvageable. If not, you can certainly leave them on the ground to rot. Less widow makers and potential damage to surrounding trees. Have a productive day.

Hey mike, I’m a forester in PA and yes, that was a Norway spruce. Cut that other dead spruce down and try to get something out of it. If you have any large maple that came down that would make some nice lumber as well. All those spruce will saw up just fine! On those dead ones, like you said 8 to 10ft up there should be some good wood! Best of luck. I’ll send you an email with a pic of the inside of my garage, I did the back wall in old reclaimed lumber that I got off a barn. Looks GREAT! You’ll love that board and batten look! Take care mike!
@heymakerphd19823 жыл бұрын
An Amish sawmiller told me that he could almost always get a couple good boards out of some really ugly logs. For all the harvestable timber you have, I'd recommend renting a small skidder. Lots easier on you, the logs and the woods. Make a log pile in a day or two that will last you months.- For all the dying pine, the state forester said probably a fungus. He said fungicides would help, but expensive. So he recommended plain vinegar sprayed on the bottom (5-6') of the trunk, to the ground, especially where the bark has been knocked off. I've saved 4 out of 7 pines, so far. Couple bucks, some time and a little pump sprayer. Seems gov't workers know stuff.- Love to watch your family interact, - peace, no drama. Blessings.

Well with the firewood as a back up, you have nothing to lose by taking out the dead timber. It doesn't sound like this wood will be used in structures that require massive strength so (as in bridge beams)I would harvest them, even the buggy ones as it will cut down on termites that are out there breeding and making it possible to lose all the standing timber. It happens a lot up here in Alaska. The bugs come in on the ships from overseas and migrate out into our forest leaving nothing living in our areas and ready for a forest fire cause they are so dry. I would rather cut one large one and let three little ones keep growing into large trees that will grow much faster once thinned
