Process I went through to swap out the clockspring in my f150 after obtaining a replacement at my local Pullapart. Fairly simple and unfortunately for you, the viewer, no airbag explosion. LOL

So glad you didn't get a face transplant messing with that airbag without disconnecting the battery first.. Side from that, thanks for sharing! This helped.

Aaaaaa ALWAYS disconnect your battery and wait at least 10 minutes before working on the airbag. That could have blown up in your face. This is how people get severely injured or killed. I am not trying to be that negative guy but in this case you ALWAYS disconnect the battery and leave it disconnect and wait atleast 10 minutes before working on air bag.

Never knew my 97 Ford Expo with over 418K miles had a clock-spring.. Great video tho. I wish now I wouldn't have watched it. Now mines probably going to go bad... 😎😡😎

Lol. I wouldn't worry too much. Mine was fine. It turned out to be that all the bearings in the steering column had failed. Swapped the entire column and all is good. :-)

That clip for the dinger, is to remind you that the key is still in the ignition. So you don't lock them in the vehicle. My horn is dead in my 03 F150. It's the clock spring. Have to change it

@@inkdreaper874 that dinger is giving me problems in the 1999 ford ranger i bought yesterday. Also i can not turn the key all the way OFF to get it to stop. Had to disconnect the battery when i got home to get the dinging to stop =(. Going to replace the Key Ignition Cylinder and see if that fixes anything. Is it required for that little dinger wire to be connected to the ignition? Because ill just cut it if not, it would save me $100 for a whole new clock spring system.

The ignition cylinder should fix it. That said, I think I ran mine disconnected until I receive the whole column and it was no problem. Good luck.

@@aaronsrose just replaced the battery, added some WD40 to door s to fix a door adjam light, and it starts up fine! Hopefully the airbag doesn't randomly go off on me while I'm driving.

It would be nice to have included the size of the torx bit. everything else was very helpful.

Check the RAG JOINT on the steering shaft. That will cause your crunchy, banging, play in the steering wheel.

Would this possibly cause the fuse to continually blow for the turn and brake lights? I’ve changed the blinker and brake switches. Also changed the turn signal/wiper lever. This is about my last option. Getting frustrated!

I wouldn't think so. The only power that goes through the clockspring is the horn, Cruise, and airbag. If your fuse blows when you touch the brakes, I'd start looking for a chafed wire towards the rear brake lights. If it can be isolated with the turn signals to only one side, like it works OK on one side but blows on the other, that can help direct the search. If it blows when either signal is used, that's a bit weird. For that I'd start looking at the wire bundle under the truck to find a point that it's been hit with something and pinched. Good luck.

I have a used 2001 Harley F150 I just got a month ago. About a week ago the cruise buttons quit working, & then every so often while turning in reverse i'll hear a twang that reminds me of a spring popping right behind the airbag area.... would both of these issues be a clock spring?? Also, off topic... what model radio is that you have? I've seen another person with the same one & wanted to see if its still available.

Howdy! It certainly could be the clockspring. Mine was very stiff to turn and squeaked and ended up being the complete failure of the column bearings. Another common failure point of these vehicles is the buttons on the steering wheel themselves. I did a video when I changed mine out after they started flopping around. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g37ZgWelqalmo6s I’d pull the airbag out and look around at the wiring under it. If it looks OK, I’d then pull the wheel and look at the clockspring to see if there are visible signs of damage. Like if it had been installed too far screwed to one side so it tightens up. The radio is a Pioneer AVH X2008BS. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXyypIx6drN-a7M Only thing I didn’t like about it was the push button volume control. In my opinion, if you don’t need the video aspects of it, you’re better off with a single din unit. Thanks!

Hello Jerus. I have a Ford F-150 2017 XLT and none of the steering wheel controls are working. The radio controls, cruise control, wind shield wiper, turn signal, trip computer or phone answering. I changed the radio and A/C system with a different one a year ago, everything was working as it should be when sundelly this problem turned up two days ago. Do you think the problem is related to the car clockspring?

Hey man. Amazing content. My horn doesn’t work. The horns are new and the fuse it also good. Do you think it might be the switch where you disconnected the horn
@aaronsrose

Certainly possible. I think there may be a relay in the horn circuit as well. That would be the next thing I'd check before heading into the steering wheel. Thanks!
