I have a 1996 GMC YUKON.and I had to replace the gearbox , pitman arm , inner tie rod end, stabilizer bushings and I still had wheel slack. I found that the intermediate shaft joint or also called rag joint was worn and their was about 1/4 - 1/2 in. slack at the joint. I replaced the rag joint and also adjusted the gearbox adjusting screw on top of the gearbox clockwise no more than 1/2 turn max. Adjust by 1/8 increments until it feel right to your truck. Hope this helps anybody reading comments.

You have made this job so easy for me to do. I was worried considering all the struggle people have had switching the gear box out. I took all your advice, especially using the voice grips to tap the rag joint back in place. I will say that I am doing two jobs at once. Power steering pump as well. Saw that another guy removed the ac compressor from its bracket and set it out the way, removed that bracket itself, and then the PS pump. So I did have a lot more room in the engine bay to reach things. Well I have the great box in and tightened down. Now I gotta do the pump and the rest. Hopefully my reman parts work and don't leak. Just want to say thank you for this video. You helped a guy with a fresh nerve injury in one hand so this job with confidence and without incidence (knock on wood)

32 mm is a 1-1/4 inch. divide millimetres by 25.4 to get inches. Good tip about dropping sway bar. Good tip on getting spline on box to engage the steering column with vise grip and hammer. Good tip about getting spline bolt out then realign column to straight ahead. It's going to make my job a lot easier. I'm sure I'll manage to find all kinds of other ways to get crossways but your observations are priceless.

It's a 33mm or 1 5/16 nut. I wouldn't recommend beating a socket on. Just went to Oreilly's and found a 33mm socket. They called it an axel nut socket. Had to do this yesterday. That nut is supposed to be torqued to 180 ft/lbs.

When I first bought my 140k 97 suburban, I replaced all of the steering joints and alignment and still had slop in the steering! Replaced the intermediate shaft and adjusted the steering box and still had slop. The jerky steering was still there. I bought the GM steering reservoir fix to replace the variable ratio steering sensor/valve but after looking at my truck someone had already done the conversion. They didn’t unplug the steering sensor on the column under the dash. Once I unplugged it, my steering isn’t annoying anymore so far. I always seemed like I had to constantly correct the steering while driving!

I'm replacing my 95 box tonight (it was a reman. that was leaking), I found if you take the bolt off higher up on the steering connection and use the same process of vise grip, you can drive it down then the whole unit comes out. Replacement is just opposite. It does help with that dang plastic cover alignment.

Rag joint can be purchased separately from the lower steering shaft, but you'll have to drill out the original's mounting to get a new one in there. The Dorman replacement shaft is probably the best fit but it's $200, so you might consider just replacing the joint. It's something that is easiest to do when replacing the gear box, and then you can attach the shaft before reinstalling the box and save a headache from trying to fit them together after the fact. Just get a helper to guide the lower shaft back into the upper shaft while you grunt the whole thing into place from below. Better yet, get them to lift the thing into place so you have a free hand to hold your beer.

I have a 97 GMC Yukon. Thanks for the video. I’d like to see your actual work, rather than a cutaway and you returning when it’s done. For me, a novice, trying to better understand the mechanics of my vehicle, and determine whether I am gonna attempt the fix myself, or buy the parts online and have Dave, my trusty mechanic, do the job for me, seeing the done ... and even chuckling at your F-Bomb count would go a long way towards helping me with that decision. Good job. You have a new subscriber (i know yippy!) Have you ever wiped out in a snowstorm driving a humongous , rear wheel drive, early 70’s Cadillac, Oldsmobile 98 ... or the like, where you feel like you are suddenly floating or otherwise disconnected from the frigg’n car? Its gonna go where it wants to. In another second , it will smash into that snow bank and the steering wheel you have depended on is now like a kids toy steering wheel, or a prop in a Laurel and Hardy skit. This is what my truck is like all the time. It’s only been a few days. Previously, this steering malfunction was random and rare. I think I’ll buy the 2 parts and give Dave a call. I’ll look for your affiliate links below.

So if my gearbox timing is off can you explain exactly how you get it back like the one you took off? Do you have to turn the shaft all the way one way until it stops? Then back the other way? This is my main concern about doin the job myself is my steering wheel is gonna be off real bad...but I’m not paying a shop close to a grand to do it. Thanks
@512kjt4 жыл бұрын
You nailed it! Turn it all the way either way until it stops. Wrap a piece of tape around the output shaft and make a mark with a pen or marker and correlate it with a spot on the gearbox or use the marker to mark the gear box. Then, turn the input shaft in the opposite direction until the output shaft stops going in the other direction and mark it. At that point you have lock to lock on the gearbox. Next, rotate the input shaft back until the mark is halfway between both marks and you will be very close to centered on the gearbox. Your steering shaft and steering wheel will be very close to straight up alignment once all is connected. Good Luck!

@512kjt3 жыл бұрын
Hey Kortney, it could be... depends on mileage. There is an adjustment you can perform to the box on the nut and bolt on the top of the box that will sometimes allow you to tighten up the mesh between the worm gear and the follower, but if you've got high mileage it could be that there is no more adjustment to the gear mesh and the components are worn beyond adjustment. Check out this vid. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKnVi4N9j9iVZ5Y Be patient and watch the whole thing and then read some of the comments. A lot of information being shared. Good luck!

I've replaced every component in the steering system on my C1500 97, including replacing the gear box 4 times (Autozone). Still 4 inches of play very loose. Parts I've replaced (Power steering (deleted electronic orifice), Power Steering box (4 Times), rag joint and gear spline that holds the rag joint, Pit-man arm, Idler arm, inner and outer tie rods, lower and upper ball joints, upper and lower a-arms with bushings. Play seems like it's in the box, I grabbed the rag joint and rocked it back and forth, pit-man arm doesn't budge all that much, I've done a lash adjustment and it just made it worse, wish I didn't touch it. Is it just because autozone gear boxes are complete shit? Wouldn't surprise me, where can I find a quality gear box? I've looked at all the local autoparts store and all of them are re-manufactured, not brand new. Very frustrated, makes me want to go buy a newer truck that's not a chevy! Rack and Pinion would do nicely lmao
@512kjt4 жыл бұрын
Chevy eventually went to rack and pinion, but we're stuck with the old gearbox on these models. Man, you've replaced literally every component and the thing that probably isn't new is the gear box. I replaced a MOPAR reman on my Ram 3500 and the damn case had a crack in it. As much as it sucks, I think the only option when replacing the gearbox is to keep returning the crap ones until you get a good one. QA/QC is shit when it comes to reman parts. I hope you've solved the problem by now!
@justin64094 жыл бұрын
@@512kjt Yea I gave up. All of them are remans from the auto parts stores. The only place I've found that sells a new box is orilies. I forget the name off the top of my head, but its like a $400-500 box with wait time. read a comment somewhere that a Chevy dealership replaced this guys gear box 8 diffrent times, he eventually bought one and had them eat the labor to put the box in. They admited to poor quality and mentioned exactly what you said there, playing latto with gear boxes. Since I've already replaced it numerous times, and quite frankly jut tired of the pos truck, I'm just going to drive it till the wheels fall off. I'll go buy a Toyota tundra instead when my wallet permits it lol. My family has owned all American brands, Ford, Chevy and Dodge. Quality is just poor. My dad has had a Toyota tundra now since 2012. Only thing that has really been done to it is a alternator change, other than that, normal matinance (belt, oil, tires). I just wish they offered 2500 and 3500 trucks.

Just bought a 98 GMC Sierra. Steering wheel is real sloppy & gets worst when I get down on it. Steering pump?
@512kjt5 жыл бұрын
If by sloppy, you mean you've got a lot of play side to side before the truck turns, that would likely be your gearbox. If it's difficult to turn one way or the other or growling, even with a full pump, it could be the pump. Also, check out this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZXPi4R8htpgb5o These trucks have a power steering assist systems that works off of how fast you're turning the steering wheel and it varies pressure to help with feedback and counterpressure for different driving conditions.

@512kjt7 жыл бұрын
Hey RobtJude, typically the steering gear boxes won't fail hydraulically. It all depends on the symptoms (how's it's behaving). If it just stopped working and it's really hard to turn, it's likely the pump. Fluid level okay? (check while running)
@RobtJude7 жыл бұрын
512 Thanks for the reply. Yes it just stopped working. Fluid level is good. No whine, no leaks, no tugging, no indication of any problem, just stopped dead. Is that the pump? Thanks again Rob

Look I have a 98 tahoe that shakes something fierce I've put tie rods in it and I know it's not a wheel bearing or balljoint does the steering box cause this issue or is it the Pittman arm
@512kjt6 жыл бұрын
It could be either, if there is a lot of slop in the steering. It could also be the tires if they are mismatched or oversized. Also depends on when it shakes, like after you hit a bump or irregular road surfaces, etc.
@damienboyce78116 жыл бұрын
Well it does from 40-50 after 50 it stops the tires are slightly oversized 31s it does when I hit the brakes when I hit a bump it does when I turn right pretty much when it feels like doing it lol
@512kjt6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like it might be the Pittman arm of the steering gear box. I forgot to ask, 2WD or 4x4? If you've got the bigger all terrains, you might want to look into a steering stabilizer. Otherwise, if the steering gearbox is original and it's got a lot of mile on it, I would consider a replacement there.
@stacyk27915 жыл бұрын
Warped rotors, if it's when you press the brakes. Unbalanced tires if it's at certain speeds. If it's anything involving the steering, get under the front and pull around on the steering parts, if anything's loose, its probably broken.

How in the heck do you get the plastic steering arm cover back around end of steering arm and gear box? Had my steering gear boxed changed recently, but that plastic cover is up high on steering arm and loose. Thanks!
@512kjt3 жыл бұрын
Use a pipe wrench or large crescent to close up around the shaft and then hammer it down with something to drive it down to the steering box.
@crazeyspivey2 жыл бұрын
Yep, I also had a hard time getting the steering column coupler to slide down on the input shaft of the gear box. Like you, I was getting pissed, and came close to cutting that plastic shield off. The plastic of the shield fits so tight that it actually hits the frame and does not allow the steering shaft to go low enough to line up truely straight to the steering box. So, I was able to slide that darn accordian rubber steering column protector upwards. Then I could push that stupid plastic cover upwards further, and that then cleared the frame and the shaft slid right into place. Poor design by GM. Question for you: With that "flat" spot on the input shaft of the steering box, does that mean that the steering column will only go on 1 way? Is there a flat spot on the steering shaft that matches up to the flat spot on the box input shaft? I can tell as I did not remove the steering column, and the stupid shop manuals do not show anything, and none of the other KZbin videos mentioned it either.

I replaced mine (97 k1500) and the steering is now nice and tight but it is difficult to turn now. Almost like the new power is not working! What next?
@512kjt5 жыл бұрын
Mine was stiff at first. After driving it for a hundred miles or so, it started to loosen up. There is also a switch on the back side of the power steering pump that bypasses the pump's hydraulic pressure at higher speeds to give you more feedback and reduce the "power" effect so you get a better feel of the road. They can go bad, giving you less power assist while not moving or moving at low speeds. If you disconnect it, you will have full power assist all the time. There is also a steering sensor in the column that monitors if you are turning the steering wheel while the engine RPMs are low and it will speed up the engine slightly, to provide more pump pressure to help you turn. Either one of these could cause the issue. *Disclaimer- I am only offering my understanding of how the systems work together, not advice on what you should do. ;-)

Way to go Kenny, I have been thinking of buying a pitman arm puller but they are free to use from advance auto but their tool are pretty ratty from all the people who use hammers to adjust the pitman arm when they pull then lol, You know I am being sarcastic lol Good seeing you bro ;)
@512kjt8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Cary! And I did use their Pitman arm puller. It was new right out of the box so I didn't have to worry about it being beat up too bad. I've done the whole loaner tool before where the damn things were beat up so bad they were almost useless! LOL Take care, my friend! TRUMP2016 :-DDDD

I replaced the steering gear box on a 95 Sierra,but it doesn't work, I took it off and returned it and got another rebuilt one, it's not working either, it seems fine when jacked up, but on the ground there's no power steering, pump is pumping fin, any suggestions?
@512kjt7 жыл бұрын
Weird. There's really no possible way to hook them up wrong. If you've change the gear box, all things point to the pump. I would make sure I have the level topped off and if it wasn't working, that would be my next step. What caused you to replace the box in the first place? Did it just stop with the steering assist or was it a steering issue?
@chrisadams03247 жыл бұрын
Actually, the reason I replaced it is because it was leaking bad, it's my dad's truck and he wanted it replaced instead of replacing the seal. I m stumped,, it's the second one and having the same problem.
@512kjt7 жыл бұрын
The only thing I can think is there may be air trapped in the pump or the gear box. Have you tried jacking it up, starting the engine and then turning stop to stop, full left then right while the engine is running? If it's air locked, that may bleed it enough to get some of the fluid moving.

Did the play in your steering go away?
@512kjt7 жыл бұрын
Yup, sure did! It was a little stiff at first, but seems like it's broken in nicely. There's still some slop but I attribute it to the original rods and linkages, with 218k miles on them. LOL Thanks for stopping by!

hey 512kjt i live in maryland they have the worst inspection ever he said my steering box is leaking could this be because of the pitman arm or the box itself has sloppy play but turns and comes back no problem dont have to force it back or anything i have a 97 chevy suburban k1500 5.7 with about 216,250
@512kjt7 жыл бұрын
Hey Bigbeardedpothead420! I love that channel name LOL! Well played. About your "leak." Damn, y'all have some picky inspectors up there! The Pitman arm connects to the steering gear box and does not hold any fluid or grease. If you're leaking fluid, it's from your gear box output shaft (the one that the Pitman arm connects to) or it's from a leaky hose connected to your gear box. The pressure hose that comes from your PS pump is the one that has all the pressure and is more often the culprit when it comes to leaks. It has pressed hose connections on the ends. The fluid return hose is not under pressure and has some light duty clamps on it. I would buy a couple of cans of cheap brake cleaner or some soap and water and clean the hell outta everything the get rid of the residue, then drive it around and recheck it to see where the leak is coming from. The pressure hose assemblies are pretty cheap and the clamps on the return hose are cheaper. If the seals on the gear box are leaking, you're in for some more costs and labor to replace or rebuild it. I would recommend replacing instead of rebuilding it. Good luck!

Ok np Yea I've had this channel name awhile lol Yea the inspectors are ridiculous I guess I'm gonna have to get my hands dirty lol don't mind it have a good day sir so basically it's the gear box leaking then
@512kjt7 жыл бұрын
Gear box, or one of the hoses. Hoses are cheaper and easier to replace than the gear box, so I would pick on them first. Giver a good cleaning to make sure where the leak is coming from and let us know what you found! Take care! And you have a good day too!

It took me about four hours, but that's because I had to modify the rental tool to remove the pitman arm and take the time to set up my camera for the steps, etc. It shouldn't take more than a couple of hours, three at the most. Keep in mind that the shimmy could also be caused by loose or worn ball joints, tie rod ends or control arm bushings among other things. They should be able to tell you up front of these items are bad, before tearing it all down and forcing you to pay extra for the parts and labor to get it all back together.
