If I may assist. The German suffix "-burg" means "-castle" rather than "-town".

A missing plot point: how was Lenin even able to get from Switzerland to Russia? The Germans gave him safe conduct there by “sealed train”, hoping he would destabilize Russia, or better still, take it over, and Russia would sign a peace treaty with Germany on favorable terms (which did happen; the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk). Thus, Germany would no longer be fighting a two-front war and could transfer the lion’s share of its troops on the Eastern front to the West and hopefully force a breakthrough there. Of course, I realize that there’s only so much you can cover in a 15-minute video…

When i was a child with 14 or so; in school we learnt the story of a russian revolutionman who was in Switzerland and Travelled Secretly with the enemy help to start a Revolution in russia....after we read that book our teacher told us that this is a fiction ...a story..not more... I was shocked when i was 21 and my History teacher told us that this Story is true and it was Lenin....whether the german Kaiser knew that or not is still a secret...

@@scepticmuslim it’s common knowledge Lenin was supported by Wall St sorta covertly in NYC. The dialectic of the 20th century was Germany and Russia could never come together or the Anglophile east India construct would be screwed so communism (Frankfurt school predominantly Jewish intellectual social theory) became the fire that’s burned down almost every apartment in the 21st

The 30 pieces of silver represent thirty moons, i.e. thirty nights. That’s the no of days from 22 November to 21 December. That is, the Sun (Jesus) is killed by the backstabber Scorpio (Judas) and dies 30 days later on the winter solstice, only to be resurrected 3 days later… Now you know.

Thank you Dr. Abramson for another lecture on Jewish life on Russian Empire 😃. Question relating to Jewish life in Russia, not as much to this lecture per se; You have in the past talked about how the Cantonists were often sent by the Kehillah from poor families, or families who were not learned or potential future rabbis (*certainly not out of genuine choice but rooted in a coercive Tsarist policy.) Which is related to my question - are there good resources to read about historical clerical abuses by the Kelillah in Eastern Europe? I wonder if you have read "Confessions of the Shtetl: Converts from Judaism in Imperial Russia, 1817-1906?" Certainly coercion had always been a force in Russian Jewish history that resulted in many apostasies, but the aforementioned book shown there were cases of abuses or conditions within our community in history that also pushed some to see conversion out as a way out. I wonder if you have any insight or resourced? Thank you!

30 pieces of silver... if memory serves. 30 pieces of gold would be an awesome amount of wealth, back then as well as today. An ounce of gold costs $1,800 today. An ounce of silver $22 only!

"Lots of non-Poles living in Poland.. Including Ukrainians, Lithuanians, Jews, and a number of other peoples. " - Arguably the most notable group of 'other peoples' would be the Germans. The backlash against Germans in Poland was the main pretext for Germany's invasion in '39. (I know this isn't a WW2 history lesson today. I'm just throwing that out there.)

St. Petersburg was not named after the tzar Peter but after Saint Peter. That's why it has St. Just like its main fortress - Petropavlovsk is named after Peter and Paul. Bolsheviks were always OK with Peter the Great, or with Ivan the Terrible for that matter but not with a saint.

Nice counter revolutionary summation but a few corrections: the Soviets or workers and popular councils were originally in the Menshevik or counter-revolutionary socialist camp with Kerensky et al but after the July days when the workers and the soldiers et al lost patience with the Provisional Government and Kerensky and friends refusal to end the war and to carry out land reform and labor reform the masses here in Petrograd demonstrated against the government. Then the government began to round up and arrest revolutionary leaders such as Trotsky and attempted to arrest and murder Lenin like they did in Berlin with our comrades Luxembourg and Liebknecht in 1919. After that the masses started to gravitate to the Bolsheviks and especially after the attempted coup by the Russian Pinochet, Kornilov, the overwhelming majority of the country galvanized through the Soviets, the popular councils, to the Bolshevik party. Then as now the question was combined and uneven development. That is you had the greatest concentration of workers in the world here in petrograd where the country as a whole was 80% peasant and backward but even the peasants were ready for land, peace and bread as Lenin put it so at that point having overwhelming support especially in the cities the Bolsheviks leading the workers the soldiers the sailors the peasants walked in and took power with very very little violence. If you read John Reeds 10 days that shook the world basically he went to the ballet at the marinsky here went to bed got up in the morning and the government had been overturned and the Bolsheviks and the masses were in power. The capitalist the intellectuals sponsored artists small businessmen yuppies office workers almost to a man were against the new government but even though so-called public opinion the best in the brightest were against the Bolsheviks the Bolsheviks we're actually the best in the brightest and they had the overwhelming majority of the population on their side.

Solzhenitsyn emphatically denies that Jews were responsible for the revolutions of 1905 and 1917. At the end of chapter nine, Solzhenitsyn denounces "the superstitious faith in the historical potency of conspiracies" that leads some to blame the Russian revolutions on the Jews and to ignore the "Russian failings that determined our sad historical decline."

It was 30 pieces of SILVER, rabbi. And maybe people would stop making the same allegations about your people if your people stopped doing the same tropes. Just bc it’s a trope doesn’t mean it’s untrue - it just means it’s unoriginal. It is unoriginal, because the behavior never changes. Gross.
