8700k (312,99€ from march 2018, now would cost 450€) delidded with Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut liquid metal on Noctua NH-D15 with 5,1 Ghz on all cores at 1,39 V here. BF1 below 70 degrees. Not possible with 9900k. --> 8700k is better for gaming than 9900k. 9900k (700€ Tray, 800€ boxed) only for multi tasking and with custom water cooling and not for that price. 9900k is worth 450€ and gets sold for 800€ boxed.

I'd still go for the 8700k. The 9900k shows that Intel has reached the limit of the ring bus architecture. It's far too inefficient for a slight core speed bump and a couple of extra cores. The 8700k is still a great choice, both for gaming and for productivity.

@@Dr.WhetFarts Stock maybe. But try OCing your 9900K to all cores at 5GHz using air cooling. Not gonna happen. Games don't give a crap about core count, only per core clocks. So while "out of the box" stats may be better for the 9900K I have to ask you this: why would you buy a K model and leave it stock?
@Alex11223l2
@Alex11223l2 6 жыл бұрын
A lot of people don't OC, or not to 5GHz. OC adds heat and may decrease stability, some performance increase not always worth it. Buying K and not OCing makes sense in previous generations because the price difference is often small and K has a bit higher stock clocks (and iirc a bit more cache sometimes?). And for 9900/9700 there are only K versions.

@@n.i.5381 you are clueless, many people hit 5ghz on 9900k on air. im running my 9900k at 5.2 ghz using kraken x62 which is barely better than noctua nh-d15. it's so funny to read comments about 9900k from people with absolutely no experience with it. i have overclocked 2x 9900k, 1x 9700k and 1x 9600k so far, every single one overclocks better than 8th gen without needing to delid. there's a 100% chance of hitting 5 ghz on 9th gen without voiding warrenty, the end. in every single review - air cooling or not - they hit 5 ghz minimum. that can not be said about 8th gen and the piss poor tim. remove it and warrenty is down the toilet. besides, i do tons of stuff on my pc, not only gaming and there's games that like many cores. hell crysis 3 is 5 years old now and scales well above 6c/12t. more cores = higher minimums / less fps dips. the 6c i5's have already started to show issues when paired with high-end gpu's, hyperthreading saves the 8700k, for now...

@Salt Maker You'll need to show me where I said that it would last 3 to 5 more years because that's absolutely not what I said if you look closely. 7700k would last me 5 more years from today because I have a specific use case (I play older games) and low standards. On that note though, 7700k will run games for the next 5 and more years, just not optimally and that's where everyone's personal standards come in, some will be fine with the performance, some won't.

@Salt Maker "Great cpu, it will play games for 3-5 more years easily" vs "it would last ME for 3-5 years". If you don't see the difference between the two, it's your problem. I added to explain exactly what I meant to YOU, because you didn't understand my message, not because I felt like my message was unclear. Just because it would serve me for 3-5 years, doesn't mean it would serve others as long, it's not mutually inclusive. I merely said I would be fine with this cpu for that long but you took it the wrong way and yet you seem to be somewhat condescending

@@christopherday3923 Very nice! Did you see any fps difference? (I assume you're running duel RTX 2080ti) I do more workstation stuff, so my main build is Threadipper 1950X (sometime I'll get a 2990WX or whatever thing they come out next) and soon to be 4x R9 Fury with 2x SuperNova1300w in a Halloween build (I'll have LN2 cooling for a fog effect on "ThreadREAPER" for the video). The 4x Fury will have hard-line cooling, but I kind of wanted to do copper pipes with patina finish so it matches the hand-made vampire style casket I'm doing for my case, but I think regular PTEG pipes will look good enough. This is going to run 4k and triple 4k gaming (haha, my Titan Xp collectors edition was a joke at everything besides Fortnite, which did 67 fps at 4k, hence I'm going over 2x the firepower). I like my crossfire builds, they are stupid powerful compared to any single GPU (and most of my games not only support it, but get amazing scaling, so hey, that works for me!)

i7-8700 non-K is what I have at the moment. I'm not into overclocking (I prefer to keep power consumption, heat, size and noise down) and it's a pretty decent CPU. Shame about all the price increases so I'm not buying any more Intel processors at the moment and reusing what I have. Built a reasonable gaming rig for my son for uni as follows. Gigabyte GA-Z77N-wifi itx motherboard - reused Xeon E3 1240 v2 - used from eBay - running at stock like i7-3770 but no integrated GPU so lower heat generation 2 x 8GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical DDR3 1600MHz Ram - reused Gigabyte GTX 1060 3GB mini - used from eBay Noctua L9x65 cpu cooler - reused Silverstone Sugo SG05 mini itx case - reused SanDisk Plus 240 GB SDD - reused Be quiet! BN227 400w SFX PSU - new from Amazon Corsair ML120 Pro magnetic levitation bearing case fan - new from Amazon ASUS VG248QE 24 inch Widescreen LED Multimedia 3D Monitor 1920 x 1080, 144 Hz, 1 ms - new from Amazon USB bluetooth dongle - reused He loves it. Well i would have a usecase for the 9900k. It has one thing that no other CPU has. It has 8cores 16threads while having an IGPU. So if i could figure out a way to cool it properly while being in a HTPC-Case i would try to use it as a streaming + "small editing" rig without a GPU, but not only cooling is an issue, i also dont know if the IGPU is strong enough as standalone to stream via OBS' Software Encoding (x264) without a massive performance drop or stuttering since it really takes up some GPU ressources aswell.

Sad that you couldn't get a 5.0ghz OC with a 240mm AIO with the 9900k. I can get my 9900k easily to 5.1 under air using a Dark Rock Pro 4. That's running Prime95 for several hours and staying under 80C. At 5.0 it barely breaks 70C at certain points usually staying in upper 60's... Also the wattage you are showing is a lot more than I am experiencing. You might want to try testing different voltages to keep your temps down. Also you aren't taking into account the fact that future games will start using more cores especially since so many people have adopted Ryzen which also now has 8-cores and 16 threads.

yes but at what speed are you running the ring bus on these chips. the standard for the 8700k is like 4ghz or so while the 9900k runs it much higher at stock. try both running at around 4.4ghz and you pretty much take the ring bus out of the equation. and the performance wont be that much difference with the lower ring speeds. but at the end of the day the ring bus isnt really responsible for why this chip is hotter. its just the fact that there are 33% more cores. soldering helps better than just having stock paste but really you could get better performance from the i9 if it had been pasted and only as thick as the 8700k and then delidded. they made the i9 twice as thick as the 8700k and the extra thickness is an oxide layer (maybe dioxide?) that doesnt conduct heat as well as pure silicon. this makes the cpu trap heat more. if the i9 had been made at the same thickness as the 8700k and pasted then you would see that the i9 only puts out about 33% more heat than the 8700k because it has 33% more cores. its the way the chip is made and the extra thickness that makes it seem hotter. not really the ring bus. and for the power figures the hotter a chip is the more power it draws even at the same voltage and clocks etc. the fact that the i9 is running hotter makes it draw more power. i saw large drops in power when i delidded my 8700k and the same would be true for this one, more so even. so its really not the ring bu. if the chip was made the same thickness etc as the 8700k and you set the ring\llc to the same speeds and ran the same clocks and voltages as the 8700k it would be only about 33% more power which it should be becasue there are 33% more cores. and yes it does take more voltage possibly for 2 chips of the same quality level but how do you know they are the same quality level for one thing and for another the higher voltage is needed because of the heat trapping effects of the thicker chip\solder. the real problem with a ring bus is that latency increases past about 8 or 10 cores. its fine for 8 or 10 but more and you start to see higher latency. and the answer is either to add more rings or run them at insane clock speeds. both of which make the heat and power go up. thats where the ring bus really started to get a rep as being more power hungry. for an 8 core chip its still within the meaty part of the efficiency curve for the ring but, just at the upper end of it though. just my 2 cents take it for what its worth. im fine with the 8700k delidded for awhile. in a couple years if i can find an i9 cheap then sure why not. just drop it in my current system which is nice. i just wish it wasnt soldered. i was never one to be complaining about it. i delidded my 8700k with a shaving razor in about 30 seconds. it was stupidly easy and as long as you just worked it in slowly and didnt gouge the pcb. work it in each corner and then a bit on each side and then twist.

Ringbus scales well. I have E5-2696v4 and its just fine, completely cool, high gaming IPC thanks to 55MB of cache, turbo is working fine, all is dandy. I also had 2696v3 where you can use the microcode trick for limited overclock and I was running it on 10 Cores 4Ghz 18cores 3,4Ghz and that did fit in to 250W, which is for 22nm CPU really good. The only problem was Broadwell and its lack of high clocks, but ringbus has nothing to do with that, even the 4-core one had the same issue. So, please, don't buy in to the Intel marketing BS like "it does not scale" cause ringbus CPUs go up to 24 cores and there has never been one that did not scale. The only reason why Intel moved away is the L3 cache ringbus packs, with tons of cores you have to use much of the die space for cache, and very few apps benefit from it, games do for example, but most of mass multi-thread apps do not, aka it will not help you break cinebench records. Simply put mesh in SK-X is bad, the IPC went down and the only reason its there is that its cheap and the die can be smaller now.
