The thing about the P90 and the SG teams is that SG-1 (and others) where a diplomatic/exploration team. They needed a defensive weapon that didnt look scary enough to cause problems with negotiations. The SG teams that were combat oriented carried ARs and SAWs.
@brucea31032 ай бұрын
The only issue I had about the P90 with Stargate teams was that they also carried a Baretta 9mm as a sidearm. Why would you use that when FN makes the Five Seven which uses the same ammo as the P90? If I was stuck on some hostile, alien world, I would want all my ammo to sync up. That could of also been a story point where someone runs out on one platform, then cannibalizes ammo out of the other to get out of a tight sport. Kawalsky: "Colonel. We are out of ammo on the P90's." Carter: "We have a box of sidearm magazines in the Tel'tak. Transfer the ammunition into the P90 magazines."

The Gold Dot isn’t rated for the P90/PS90 because of the bullet profile. Without the feed ramp, magazine presentation of the bullet needs to be on point. There’s no collet crimp on a vast majority of 5.7 large scale commercial ammo and so those stubby bullets are more prone to failure to feed. All US large scale commercial ammo is loaded by Fiocchi USA using FN brass. Exclusions to include AAC (self made brass), Hornady (self made?) and Vanguard Outfitters (self made). So Speer GD is loaded by Fiocchi using the coated brass. The newest Critical Defense 5.7 has the same warning because of it's stubby profile. Other experts have mentioned the case lube is also needed for extraction as well since it lacks a taper.
@WayStedYou2 ай бұрын

17:05 the real world reason is that the show did use the MP5 in the early seasons and switched to the P90 in season four. The P90 ejected straight down and it made blocking easier. They didn’t have to worry about where actors stood to not take brass in the face, and with the bonus that It looks cool. The fictional reason was that the P90 was armor piercing. While Jaffa space armor and 80s Russian Soft armor aren’t very similar lol, it was cool to see them give a plausible reason at all.
@MandoWookie2 ай бұрын
It actually makes a slight degree of sense, Jaffa armor seems largely to be just metal plates, which velocity beats. Using 9mm AP works too, but likely has overpen issues, plus wear. Seeing as how Jaffa have a healing factor, but killing their symbiote will pretty much kill them, a bunch of torso shots that can reliably punch through in volume is likely the best way to insure a symbiote hit & consistent kill.Also, how they had the MP5s set up in early seasons must have been heavy. Also notice that Jackson doesn't really start using a gun until after the p90 is introduced. Which fits with its designed role as a PDW, simple manual of arms and low recoil. Or he just got tired of dying & got his shit together.

The best reason is logistics. They're traveling via Stargate on foot. They can only carry and take so much ammo. And 5.7 ammo is light. P90 is compact and carries plenty of ammo. 9mm is a heavier round with far less capacity in the mp5. The armor piercing stuff is a big plus. But the range of 5.7 is much better as well.

So you are correct in that they did use real P90's within SG SG-1 TV show. I remember watching a interview with the pyro/ firearms coordinator (i think) for the show. I remember him saying something along the lines of 'him showing up with a big case of 8 real P90's at a Directors meeting and saying these are the guns we need to use'. They had to train the cast on the guns after the first couple episodes got filmed, this is why there is a watch in weapons after the first few episodes. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the weapons would be real in early seasons of SG-1, this was filed in the 1990's are SG-1 was supported by the US Air Force, hence the reason they was able to fil on real Air Force Locations, etc....
@MandoWookie2 ай бұрын
It was mostly filmed in Canada though. Those P90s(and sets, props, actors, etc) keep showing up to this day in various productions since. A lot of the alien weapons & props were themselves reused props from older productions(especially in Atlantis, most of the Genaii, & other generic weapons props were repainted guns from Timecop & Blade 3).

Had a buddy who was in show business aka armorer in Toronto he worked on Stargate the first season before they moved it to British Columbia. The producers wanted something more futuristic than an MP fives and in Canada it was easy to get.p90s for the movie industry because of the laws in Canada. Small note they had to open up the plastic in the stock to allow the blanks when they were fired to eject because they were longer than the standard case Also as a small note if you’re a Stargate SG1 fan, he worked on the episode with the Ritu and did the part where “mom” blows up

I have served with RECCE teams both in the regular army and special operations and RECCE teams have the standard armament if its convetional scouts they have M4A1s a few with either M203 or M320 grenade launchers you would have snipers that scouta accompany they would have their sniper rifles either the M2010 or M110 maybe thier own M4 if viable. On the special operations side they have slightly different equipment but generally speaking they would have some version of the M4A1 Green berets have the URGI the Rangers at the time would be using block 2 M4A1 while Delta and DEVGRU would use HK416. So really SG1 using P90 look good for ficition but in reality they wouldnt be armed that way because most situations they would be outgunned. During GWOT which happened during this time RECCE teams really empahsized better armaments for Recon missions due to them going out alone for extented periods. Especially US Army special forces used M4A1 on all types of missions because it meats almost any type of situation you may come across it can do short and linge ranges doable enough not fancy but effective and thats what you need it efective and not too mention 5.56 is going to be much more available then 5.7.

14:54 I think they used them because blanks for 5.56 and other rounds basically vanished due to conflicts going on when filming the series but the 5.7 stuff happened to be around and the P90 looked cool so they used it.
@PrebleStreetRecords2 ай бұрын
They also started to run out of 5.7 blanks in season 7 so Carter got the "carter special" 7.5" M16 with an Elcan and beta drum mag.
@mikolajgrotowski2 ай бұрын
No, they used it because series was make with cooperation of Air Force, and Air Force they lease it. They stop use them in later season because 5.7 ammunition problem when Air Force send troops, and 5.56 was easer to obtain, so change weapon to SiGs.

@MandoWookie2 ай бұрын
@@mikolajgrotowskithe Air Force never used the P90, the show was filmed in Canada, they used it because they switched channels from Showtime to SciFi & got a better budget. They wanted to upgrade the look of the show, the P90 looked both SciFi & ejected downwards so helped with filming. The guns were leaked to the production, but from a film armorer company in Canada, not the Air Force. The Air Force had an advisor for the show, they were 'endorsed' but that doesn't mean any actual support. They used stock footage for the outside of the SGC from another movie, everything else was done on sets, or on locations around Canada.

they also switched to the P90 due to the downward ejection so it made it safer for the actors.

I guarentee that if we could buy new MGs people wouldnt poopoo the P90 hardly at all. The lack of a fun switch, and the SBR hassle, is in my opinion the primary reasons people overlook it.
@Malikyte132 ай бұрын
That's most of it yeah. Ammo cost is another issue, but if more people wanted the P90 the ammo price would likely decrease a bit too. As it stands there's just not that much of a market for it.
@gameragodzillaАй бұрын
SBR laws frankly hurt it more than even the lack of a fun switch, since the purpose of the P90 is to be very compact as a PDW. Would make for a neat briefcase gun if there wasn’t any NFA bullshit. Can’t even skirt around it with a pistol brace due to how it’s designed. The stock is the receiver.
@ALovelyBunchOfDragonballzАй бұрын
@@gameragodzilla fun fact, the stock isnt actually the receiver. The receiver is effectively the barrel assembly. Someone was trying to develop a pistol-brace for it, but I'm not sure how its been coming along. It could be done, physically, but whether it would actually be viable is a different issue. A pistol-braced bullpup would be a hard sell ergonomically.

For the job it was designed for (ie. replace 9mm sidearms & sub-guns for self defense of/by support and vehicle crews) it's a big improvement. it's not a replacement for 5.56 & 7.62 long guns or carbines for 'Infantry'.
@gameragodzillaАй бұрын
Yeah, it’s the modern equivalent to the M1 Carbine. Ironically, it went through a lot of the same circumstances as the M1 Carbine, including being used by certain speciality frontline troops who liked how handy it was beyond the personal defense role, to also complaints about lack of effectiveness of the cartridge when pushed beyond its design limitations (like the myth that .30 Carbine bounces off Chinese winter coats in the Korean War when in reality, troops were just trying to shoot the M1 and M2 Carbines way too far away and missing).

At least I know I got an all right purchase lol. Up to 250 it's a banger. But in regards to Stargate, believe it or not it had nothing to do with what the characters might want. The reason they switched from the MP5 to the P90 is 2 fold. One, aesthetics. It looks futuristic. It looks like something they would use in Stargate but the head still didn't bite. He wanted the MP5, everyone knew what an MP5 was. Not so much the P90. What swayed them to use it was when the person in charge of the weapons brought to his attention that the P90 ejected it's cases downward out of the back. What this meant was that the camera crews could get some wicked close in action shots of the fight sequences without the spent cases being thrown into the camera. Naturally they explained in story why they made the choice but in real life it simply boiled down to being able to get better cinema.
