Testing out the Federal Punch in 9mm and .45 ACP in long slides in a ballistic gel test. The 9mm is a 124 gr and I use a 5" S&W M&P 2.0 and the .45 ACP is a 230 gr and I use a 5.3" Glock 41. I also do a practical accuracy test. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.co...

The results in the gel surprised me a little but as we all know not all bullets do the same thing all the time. I am glad you took a couple of extra shots.

@@shadowwolf2524 thanks for the input. I’m really sold on the Federal HST ammo, but it’s a bit pricey right now. So I wanted to see if I could get a understanding of the price difference between the two federal products. I know as far as 45 ACP goes there’s not much out there that compares with Federal HST 230gr +P and the Hornady critical duty 220gr +P I have a just shy a case of the Hornady but only one box left of the Federal HST. So I just wondered.

I do like being able to see what's going on in slow mo. I've also seen the jug or not box have the same amount of or lack of penetration especially with Winchester brand ammo. So is there a right or wrong answer who knows. I do know I really like all your videos. You have some of the best editing of any channel and I'm sure that is time consuming. Great video as usual! Good, clean filming and thoughtful commentary. I wish I had your range! I have tested the Federal Punch 9mm several times in organic gel and four layers of denim from 3, 4.5 and 5.5 inch barrels. Penetration is between 15 and 17 inches with full expansion. Longer barrel gets higher velocity and more of a smeared bullet, whereas the bullets recovered from the shorter barrel look remarkably like expanded HST bullets. Not exactly, but very similar. Based on your test and others, to me it appears to be one of the better loads for short-barrel carry pistols. I cannot speak for the .45, though. Yours is the only test I’ve watched reviewing it and it was, indeed, a disappointing performance. Thank you for reviewing them both!

I like all calibers and long slides are cool. I think you need a 357 magnum Coonan to test. I know I need one! Also, They probably used a 5 inch Government model for the 45acp because that is standard, while there are very few, if any, 5 inch barrel 9mm as standard, so you may need a 6 inch barrel in the 45s.

Sam it's weird you have had kina anomalies in the hst and punch in .45 not expanding from a LONG BARREL when I have seen hst always open before as low as 730fps. And the .38 punch one time did great other time didn't expand from either barrel length. Do you think ammo companies are pumping out so much right now that QC on defensive is down, and sometimes the bullets are getting out with too hard/rockwell factor or whatever they may call it? 9mm looks solid.

Sam, just a suggestion: When you compare two guns/ammo, you could switch the gelatin blocks so that after you shoot the first gun, you move the back block to the front so your second gun rounds do not pass through the same path as the previous rounds. I might be all wet, but it would seem to me that if a round travels the same path a previous round has, it is going to penetrate farther as it is following a hole that is from the previous round.

Other than old school Black Talon, I haven't really seen any 230gr 45acp that performed really well unless it was substantially above SAAMI or 45 Super. Black Talon expands past .75 inch and penetrates deep, 18 inches, but it is rated I believe at 950fps. I shot a 45 Super 230gr Gold Dot from a Glock 30 into a cat litter jug filled with water, it blew the jug to pieces and expanded to the point that the petals stuck out like fingers. 45+p and 45 Super are good, but from my experience a 10mm Underwood 150-165gr hollowpoint is the very best manstopper pistol round you can get.

it's really a thing about sectional density. Lots of mass and high density. I have seen bullets expand at 700 FPS but it takes a softer core and better design. I am pretty sure a 185 gr would expand even at 800 FPS while a 230 gr at that speed with more energy would not.

Because the rounds cut through the MDF as if it was a hole punch and the MDF were a piece of paper instead of bone which would shatter and splinter, doesn't that fill up any hollow point and thus reducing expansion? Bone will flatten a bullet and force expansion. And if you are shooting a jacket round or flat tip round, does the MDF disperse the energy of the round as it strikes it due to it being a flat plane in contact with the entire block thus allowing for the energy to hit over the entire face. As you are aware, no bones are completely flat and are rounded at some point with long bones being mostly round or oblong shaped which, along with being far denser and made of a harder material, disperse the energy of the bullet in odd directions as it shatters and becomes shrapnel in the body? Not trying to talk trash about you, your test or your methodology. I am merely asking a question of someone more knowledgeable than I about terminal ballistics.

This is the first time I've seen Federal Punch ammunition seem to live up to its name. The 9x19 did very well. I have no idea what's up with the 45 here. And as for the 22LR stuff, I don't see a real advantage over CCI's Stinger.

Interesting culmination of two great pistols using excellent ammunition in the hands of someone with obvious shooting skills. If my aging memory serves me correctly the original military specification for the 9mm round included an effective range of 55 yards or something close to that. In the case of your 75 yard target I’d say again impressive shooting skill but you are probably pushing the kinematic boundaries for either of those two rounds out of a handgun. Just a guess on my part.

Thanks. One thing to consider though, is this 5" barrel seems to make all ammo expand well. So it might not be as good in a short barrel. I don't recall what I got in a previous test, I think it was okay in a short barrel though.

Lucky Gunner (Labs) did that with .38 & .357 defensive ammunition. You are correct: the results are very interesting. Lucky Gunner is a commercial enterprise and they can afford to purchase the several cases of ballistic gel required. Unless Gun Sam wins the lottery - or all of us start sending in piles of cash - I doubt he can replicate the Lucky Gunner testing protocol.

I plan to. I have some 9mm+P and .327 Federal Xtreme I am testing next week. I will be comparing to target ammo, as comparing to HP ammo makes no sense. What I want to see, is if they penetrate less in gel than FMJ. This will definitely help some people who don't or can't carry HP ammo.

When did they do that? Just because we see only one side of the gel block does not mean he is shooting in the same spot. I'm not sure if you understand how a square block works. Being square means you can take a shot on the left side of the block and take your next shot on the right side now this is the confusing part both bullet paths if viewed from only one side will make it appear as one path but if you look down from the top you could 2 that's 2 complete and different bullet paths. Now this is really interesting being that it is a square you can do the same testing using the bottom half of the block. See this is the difference between shooting something that is flat as opposed to shooting something that has 4 sides. I know this is really complicated but I sincerely hope I was able to explain this in a way that you understand. P.S. I don't know where you got your education but I hope if you have kids that they have a much better education. Not saying you are stupid at all just that the education system had a major fail. Have a good day
