It comes down to your personal preference. I love carrying my 9mm and I switch them in and out of my rotation every now and again. With that being said more often I'm going to carry my compact 45 Glock just because of the power and it will definitely stop the threat.

With the correct barrel length, and the correct speed behind the bullet. The 9 mm is plenty to take down a full size man.. unfortunately today handguns have only gotten shorter and shorter… while ammo has gotten hotter and hotter.. so we keep running into the same problem where we don’t get ballistic improvement no matter what we do… the best specifications for whatever handgun round you and it will be more than enough… for instance I would rather have 35 inch barrel where I could get some serious speed out of that 9 mm hollowpoint.. rather than a little that will only produce 3/4 of the same speed and performance… One of the main reasons why my duty rifle is a 5.56 16 inch 1/7 twist AR, and my emergency combat rifle is a 20 inch loaded with 55gr.. the way it was designed to be the most lethal

@RTaggs I see your point about 9mm being "enough" but that's an unarmed animal you probably have time to place shot well and not high stress self defense situation. Before you say hunting is high stress environment you must have never been actually fearful of life and want more than enough.

Well, here's my opinion on whether to go with the 45 or the 9mm. For some people the 9mm is best and for some people the 45 is best. It really depends on you. If you're a girlyman then the 9mm is for you. If you're a man's man then the 45 is best for you. If you're a girlyman you want the 9mm because to you the noise and recoil are iccky, and you can't shoot straight so you need lots of bullets. If you're a man's man you are trained and disciplined; you like the noise and recoil and you can shoot straight. So let's say that at three o'clock in the morning you wake up in bed and there's a stranger in your bedroom and he says "I gonna kill you sucka." If you're a girlyman you grab your 9mm and empty the 14 round magazine in his direction. Since you can't shoot straight maybe you'll get lucky and one bullet will graze his head. At that point he's going to come at you and slash your throat, and since you're a girlyman, that's exactly what you deserve. But if you're a man's man you only need one shot and the intruder is going down. If you don't think a 230 grain bullet loaded up with 7.2 grains of Unique, moving out at 960 FPS isn't knock down power, then you need to go back to ballistics class. After you fire that one round you can roll over and go back to sleep because the intruder is history.

Or maybe some people choose 9mm because they don't wanna pay 50 dollars a 100 rd box for ball ammo lol. Not sure why 45 is the "manly" round. It doesn't even kick hard. It feels like a push. 40 S&W has more of a "snap" to it than 45 auto. By your metrics, the real "manly" cartridge for semiauto is the 10mm. Its wipes up the floor with 45 acp. There's a reason hunters choose this as their sidearm in bear country.

Like my 45. Mainly for going off grid. Normally just stick to my 380 while on grid or near town, 9 mm seems like you need more rds. In grid down them magic hollow points for 9 or 45 might be hard to get. But fmj 45 work good. Fmj 9 mm do not work well. We learned in the 90s.

The problem with the percentage of rounds on target statistics is that it includes larger capacity magazines being used during the shootings. So is the percentage smaller because more rounds are being fired? How many of those rounds were not needed and or missed because more rounds were being fired with progressively worse accuracy as each additional shot is fired? I'm a retired CSI and I have worked hundreds of shootings including officer involved shootings. In many of those cases the shooters sprayed and prayed and missed with their first magazine of rounds but hit the first or second shot from the second/reload magazine. The deciding factor was not magazine capacity but whether the shooter truly aimed! The concept of fire superiority is for military combat, not civilian combat where innocent bystanders are more likely! I believe the key to surviving a shootout Is not magazine capacity but fire discipline. Shooters with automatic pistols should practice firing two shot groups in succession On multiple targets with a one or two second pause between each group until it is second nature. Those pauses will greatly improve accuracy! Practice firing two shoots and in your mind say Mississippi then fire two more until one or two rounds are left in the pistol then reload. Don't fire to empty. Reloading with one left in the chamber is faster than reloading and having to work the slide. Plus you develop the Good habit of counting your rounds. If you're at an indoors range with one narrow lane get a target with multiple bulls eyes on it in addition to the silhouette targets! 31:40 As far as effectiveness on target, from the hundreds of cases I've worked with everything from a22lr to a 44 magnum or 12 gauge, I'd say bigger is always better!

I own and shoot 9mm with 15-round magazines and 45acp with 12-round magazines. Love them both. For self-protection in urban areas, I prefer the 9mm loaded with 147grain FMJ or JHP ammo. For self-protection in rural areas, I prefer the 45acp loaded with 255 grain flat-nose hard-cast solid-lead ammo. However, my personal favorite handgun is a 6-inch .357 magnum with two speed loaders filled with 180 grain or 200 grain ammo. If I need to carry something smaller and lighter than .357 magnum, 45acp, or 9mm, I will carry a .380acp with two 7-round magazines loaded with 100 grain flat-nose hard-cast solid-lead ammo. Thanks for the video.

I have both 45 ACP and 9 mm pistols that are suitable for EDC I find that using the 45 ACP that carries the 200 grain bonded defense round from double tap comes out of the barrel at 1100 ft./s is most definitely worlds apart from almost all 9 mm loads. My calculations put this round at 537 foot pounds of energy which is approximately 150 foot pounds of energy more than any standard 9 mm self-defense load.. I refuse to put the 9mm down however because I do 😢find myself carrying the Glock 19 on many occasions. Day to day I carry both the 9mm and 45acp half & half.

Remington 870 next to the bed. Springfield XDs Mod 2 .45 for concealed carry in my home town, and Springfield XDm .45 plus the XDs when down on the border out west. The XDs .45 is single hole accurate when I take my time. Follow up shots get progressively worse. I'm 76, it is a lot to handle so I'm ordering the new optics XDs in 9 mm to see how it does. I love the slim frame on those pistols for easy pocket holster carry.

So many people talk about the advancement of tech making the 9mm a more viable defensive round with modern hollow-points. Then for a SHTF situation, they stock up on a few thousand rounds...OF FMJ! Fact - in FMJ, the .45 is quite a bit superior. And with JHPs, the .45 has a slight advantage. I'm not so concerned about the modern fad, ie: capacity. My EDC 1911 Commander holds 9 rounds. And I have a very reliable Wilson Combat 10 round spare mag. That's 19 rounds for a situation that typically requires 2 or three.

I carry different things for different situations; From Mouse guns to Magnums. My house gun is a full size 9 mm with a 20 round magazine. My truck gun is a sub compact 9 mm. But, my main carry is a 45. The reason is versatility. I generally carry 120 grain at 1420 FTPS in one magazine, one magazine of 255 hard cast at 920 FTPS, extra mags of 185 or 200 grain. They are all factory loads. I have lots a black bear where I live, including in my yard sometimes and that’s why the hard cast 255s. The bear haven’t attacked us or our livestock, but they have attacked peoples dogs in the area. I have an autistic son, and he will run, and they may chase him. When he is outside, the hard cast magazine is in my pistol. To me the 45 is the most versatile auto loader in existence. If I really need more power, I can run 45 Supers as well. It’s amazing that all of that variety can be used easily in one pistol. When hunting with a handgun, I will use a 357 or 44 magnum revolver, but for most days, the 45 is much easier to conceal, very thin for caliber, easier to shoot well, and lighter than my big magnums. Thanks for the video.

Notice how big and slow is better than little and faster every time? Well now, it ain’t just what she said anymore! And on that note - 45 ACP: [1904 AD] Standard P - 835 x 230 x .451 = 86,614.55 divided by 7,000 = 12.37 ft pd Underwood Ammo 45 ACP: +P - 925 x 255 x .452 = 106,615.5 divided by 7000 = 15.23 ft pd Fools Figure, but Figures don't Fool! Which now leads us to the Facts - 45 Colt: [1872 AD] (Original) Standard P - 1000 x 235 x .456 = 107,160 divided by 7,000 = 15.3 ft pd Original Underwood Ammo 45 Colt: Standard P - 1000 x 250 x .452 = 113,000 divided by 7,000 = 16.14 ft pd - Xtreme Penetrator +P - 1400 x 250 x .452 = 158,200 divided by 7,000 = 22.6ft pd - Xtreme Penetrator +P This is the results of big getting faster. So, "faster can be goods so long as size is not compromised!" And I quoted her on that. [Liberty Ammunition 45 Colt: Standard P - 1800 x 78 x .452 = 63,460.8 divided by 7,000 = 9.0658 ft pd - Civil Defense Showing little going fast is just that, and nothing more!] +P - 1325 x 325 x .452 = 194,642.5 divided by 7,000 = 27.8 ft pd - Long Flat Nose Gas Check Hi-Tek Coated Hard Cast +P This is the results of big getting bigger! As so did her eyes! Standard P - 900 x 220 x .452 = 89,496 divided by 7,000 = 12.785 ft pd - Maximum Expansion (before it expands) Standard P - 900 x 220 x 1.75 = 346,500 divided by 7,000 = 49.5 ft pd - Maximum Expansion (after it expands) This is the results of big becoming HUGE! I gotta say, I'm really sick of these 9mm fan boys comparing a 1911 with 7 round capacity to a modern 9 mm with 17 round capacity. Guys... Let's stop pretending that we don't have multiple high capacity 45's now! My XDM is 13 plus 1 and 16 plus 1 with my extended plus 3 base plates. But even with "standard" sized, unmodified mags, you're still talking 14 rounds of 230 grain bullets. Combine that with plus p HST bullets that damn near expand to an inch in diameter! That's 14, 1 inch wound channels penetrating 14-18 inches. That beats ANY standard capacity 9 mm on earth as far as damage inflicted on your target. Even a brown bear isn't walking through that much lead. ☝️

The capacity conversation with today's platforms is completely irrelevant. Everyone tries to compare it to a 1911, which I think is more about a convenient disparity between the 2 platforms, but there are plenty of high capacity 45 acps on the market including sub compact. A glock 30S, carries 10 + 1 in a compact package, that is only 1 to 2 rounds less than a similar subcompact in 9 mm....

From experience, almost all hollow point rounds that go through a person dressed for winter, become the same as a FMJ round, a lot of penetration and very little damage. The more modern solid copper rounds, as the Underwood rounds, are some of the most barrier blind rounds and still do even more damage than larger rounds.

Many years ago, I did a lot of research to decide on which caliber and style handgun to get. Since it seemed everything was measured against the 1911 in 45acp, that's what I gravitated to and bought. Concealing it was a challenge, it was heavy, and bulky, but it shot like a dream. So, for purposes of carrying concealed, I moved to a subcompact 9mm that I carried in the hip pocket of some of my pants. Still slightly bulky but manageable. But some years back I moved to a 22lr Beretta M21A Bobcat loaded with hyper velocity rounds (for reliable cycling). I can hit quite well with it at self defense distances and have done stress tests with it and found that it is a GREAT point and shoot handgun. When my pants will allow, I now sometimes carry a micro 9mm, but for the most part my Beretta is in my hip pocket.

The form factor is also relevant. .45 makes more sense in a larger duty pistol, not so much in a single stack. The two merge in the Compact. I have a .45 XDM Mod 2 with a 9 flush mount mag and you can get extended mags that have 13 rounds in an easily concealed package. I have a Glock 19 that carries 15 rounds in a sub compact format that is super light. Both work. I shot a hog and dropped it with a .45. I don’t know that a 9mm would not.

I’ve seen multiple posts over the years of ER docs/nurses saying how much damage is done by all calibers from 380 - 45, so there’s some input from those who actually see the wounds. I’m all for the physics of things (e=mc^2), but also realize the comfort factor to ensure one actually carries. I’m less swayed anymore by capacity because of the amount of data showing 1-3 shots stopping the encounter when shots are fired and the data of encounters stopped just with presentation. All that said, how do y’all feel about 40 in this same discussion? I’m a fan of the 40.

Ive never found the recoil of .45 acp to be an issue. Its pretty low pressure. The US adopted 9mm because of logistics. Nato adopted it because of the abundance of surplus ammo after ww2.

This is never any mention of collateral damage when comparing 9mm vs 45. The review is very good but if one misses with the nine for all the reasons stated as favorable could be negative. Hitting an unintended target is never forgiven.

The argument for increased capacity of 9mm, is moot in states where magazine limitations are in effect. Bullet designs have been improved and developed in both calibers . In case of home invasion and multiple assailants, perhaps a shotgun is the best response. The 45 acp even if it does not expand, is still .45, the 9mm if it does not expand is .356 . This may not matter, but it may mean all of the difference. Do you need increased capacity, that’s a good question and it’s up to each of us to decide. It all comes down to personal preference and choice. What you can shoot better and hit with is the best choice for you.

I guess you really won’t know what will stop the threat faster until you have to shoot someone . Police officers would share stories or even ww2 veterans about the 45 would be good. I believe a slower bigger round would be more devastating than a round that goes burning through. Most in a shtf scenario would have ball ammo anyway. Conceal carry with hollow points is best.

IMO- it’s the one which you can control. A single stack 9 for maybe smaller “ weaker” people? Of course with the adrenaline rush maybe weaker goes out the window. And nearly all defense shoots are only 2-4 shots? I prefer the .45 1911 for an EDC with HORNADY critical defense. If this round will drop a 200#+ wild hog- well there’s your answer.

SOCOM did extensive testing on this in the mid 90s. A few 9mm rounds back then met their parameters. More than 15 .45 rounds did. 9mm has gotten better since then but the same tech applied to .45 is still better. The wound channel and penetration through walls, windshields and car doors then wound data favors .45. Again a few 9mm rounds are close. It comes down to your practice, skill and the situations you expect to be in. Unless a double stack .45 fits your hand well then it’s not much of a debate to have. I have both. I use both depending on circumstances.

FBI findings “Increased bullet mass will increase penetration. Increased velocity will increase penetration but only until the bullet begins to deform, at which point increased velocity decreases penetration. Permanent cavity can be increased by the use of expanding bullets, and/or larger diameter bullets, which have adequate penetration. However, in no case should selection of a bullet be made where bullet expansion is necessary to achieve desired performance.35 Handgun bullets expand in the human target only 60- 70% of the time at best. Damage to the hollow point by hitting bone, glass, or other intervening obstacles can prevent expansion. Clothing fibers can wrap the nose of the bullet in a cocoon like manner and prevent expansion. Insufficient impact velocity caused by short barrels and/or longer range will prevent expansion, as will simple manufacturing variations. Expansion must never be the basis for bullet selection, but considered a bonus when, and if, it occurs.”

To return to the FBI test protocols, it will be remembered that in penetration tests the .45 ACP FMJ scored 100%, while the 9mm achieved a slightly lower 95.5% success rate. While the minimum acceptable penetration for police use was established to be 12 inches, the FBI tests concluded that a penetration of 18 inches was even better. During the tests, however, the FBI assigned no points for penetration beyond the optimum 18 inches. The .45 ACP FMJ bullets penetrated an average depth of greater than 28 inches, while 9x19mm FMJ bullets were a full 4 inches less. Some might consider this over penetration, but for military applications, greater penetration is both acceptable and desirable. As previously mentioned, penetration is only one aspect of bullet effectiveness. The size of the permanent wound cavity must also be considered, and the .45 ACP FMJ bullets in the FBI tests achieved average permanent wound cavities of 3 cubic inches, while the 9mm bullet permanent wound cavities were a full cubic inch less. This significantly increases the prospect of the .45 striking a bone or internal organ. This can be summed up in the FBI’s overall wound value that assigns a value of 2.91 to the military .45 ACP and only 1.65 to the M882 9x19mm. This value is “... the index of demonstrated wounding effectiveness, not potential, as measured by the FBI Ammunition Test results.”

I typically carry a Glock 21 (it’s a .45 ACP handgun). It must also be noted that ammunition capacity (while important) is often over-exaggerated. Most self defense shootings are 3 rounds (shots fired), 3 yards (distance away) and 3 seconds (in time of altercation). Sources can vary, but this is typically taught (from what Ive seen). So even a 8-9 shot M1911 handgun will generally be more than enough in most self defense cases.

The best defensive .45 ACP ammo against a human threat is 185gr hollow points with a +P charge behind it, the 230gr. hollow points are just too slow to expand well and are best left to .45 Super powered guns and up. 230gr. non-expanding bullets are good for certain animals where penetration through heavy bone and thick hide are needed but for two legged varmints especially out of compact and sub-compact pistols 185gr. and 200gr. at the most bullets are best.

I would rather have more ammunition and more chances to hit a target, and the technology of 9mm ammunition has come a long way. Now for home defense and as a side arm while hunting, 45 ACP!

People are completely misinformed when they sit there and think the 45 doesn't penetrate as well as a 9 mm. When the FBI did their comprehensive ballistic testing in the late eighties, 9mm wasn't even considered as an option, because it wasn't capable of penetrating various barriers and still capable of going deep enough and soft tissue to hit vital organs. The caliber's tested that was capable of this, was 45 ACP, 10 millimeter, and 357 magnum.

9 is lighter round per round but a 17-18 rd 9mm mag is significantly heavier than an 8rd 45 mag. A lot of the so called new and improved bullets show spotty expansion. If my bulled gets plugged and doesn’t expand, I’d rather it be 45 rather than .356. Ad to,that the reality that most civilian fights start when one has allowed there situational awareness to lapse and even one shot will require greAt speed and luck. Again only one to three rounds between me and a loss. I’m going big, to go home 😉 P.S living tissue is very elastic, so no carry handgun is going to create a powerful enough shockwave to create meaningful damage beyond bullet diameter. so “wound channels” in gel or explosive results on fluid targets aren’t relevant for comparison of effectiveness

The one that works the best is the one that stops the threat with the least amount of rounds fired. It all comes down to combat skills and training for such an incident.
