QUICK NOTE: I learned during the production of this video that the bullet "grain" refers to its mass, and not the grain measurement of the gunpowder. Apologies for misspeaking during the video!

I appreciate the fact you say this. As someone who grew up around firearms and everything, I also assumed that’s what it was too. Learned maybe a year or two ago that it was bullet weight and not powder and went “huh.. I’ve been super wrong my whole life” lol

This is the cleanest and most clear slow motion footage of gel ballistics I’ve ever seen. I’ve scoured the internet and KZbin looking at these videos, to the point where my wife now hates KZbin. This was amazing. I hope to see more of these ballistic tests at this quality. Subscribed and liked, and left a comment for the algorithm gods. Top Notch fellas.

Just in case it isn't mentioned elsewhere, the reason for the secondary detonation in the gel is from the collapsing gasses. This is the same thing as a diesel engine combustion. The compression of the bubble collapsing compresses the gasses enough for ignition, and the fuel is either raw powder or the gel itself.

Outstanding footage! I want to point out that the Extreme Defense is solid copper. I plan to use for my deer hunting this fall, as literature shows lead fragments end up in game meat. They are very small particles, you are not getting them out. So all copper is a HUGE plus for these (no pun intended). The shape of these rounds also causes more energy to dump sooner as seen in your slow motion frames, also a great aspect. Last, I shoot into rubber mulch. It stops even rifle rounds, and for target practice I suspect I can reuse these in my reloading system a number of times. The rifling grooves may be able to be filled electrochemically, (and swage or sand high parts?). This ammo is close to a buck per round, but if my hunch is correct about the reusable nature of this design, it will be well worth it. Especially if 9mm ever gets hard to acquire down the road again (EMP, Solar Flare, stupid politics, etc.)

Somehow faster with less grains? That's very normal. With everything else being equal, a lighter projectile will have more velocity. 1,000 horsepower with push a Miata a heck of a lot faster than it will push a 3/4 ton 4 door pick-up. Great video btw. So cool to see how everything acts/reacts in slow mo. I can’t tell if it was just me or if (especially on the ball round) you could see the bullet yawing a little as it exits the muzzle? Also I noticed when you get the dieseling effects in the gel, it’s always when the largest section of the temporary cavity recompresses. I’m gonna end up watching this a few more times now to see if there’s any solid footage of what the bullet is doing to make the wound channel larger in one area compared to another. Because if you noticed the dieseling happened closer to the exit with the ball round (I think about where it began to tumble) and closer to the entrance on the penetrator round (which seemed to possibly start tumbling and doing that lateral rotation closer to the entrance wound). Definitely gonna watch this a few more times to analyse it like a real nerd.

The larger cavities are due to the round beginning to transfer energy as it meets increased resistance; you can see how the shape of the bullet is a major factor in when the energy transfer occurs, especially in handgun calibers with short barrels and relatively low velocities.
@henryyu4694
@henryyu4694 2 жыл бұрын
The faster the bullet travels, the larger the cavity. That's why 556 is so deadly compared to 9mm. its cuz the high velocity puts so much trauma to ur organs.

Wow i cant thank you enough for providing this insane quality video for free. Please try the liberty defense 9mm hollow point traveling at 2000 fps vs a 45 acp round. a lot of people think a heavier slow bullet does more damage than a fast light bullet. I believe a fast bullet is more deadly.
@tihruytssgjjvsavcxtbvhj3429
@tihruytssgjjvsavcxtbvhj3429 2 жыл бұрын
Liberty defense is heavily debunked. It's a garbage round that severely underpenetrates. It basically turns to dust on impact.
@henryyu4694
@henryyu4694 2 жыл бұрын
@@tihruytssgjjvsavcxtbvhj3429 overpenetration is useless because it means the force of the bullet is not quickly put into the target to wrangle the organs and deal fatal damage. A straight pass through will not do much. also, the bullet can end up in a innocent civilian.

I have most of the rounds you mentioned just because i like seeing how different rounds blow up water jugs 😂. One weird one i haven’t shot yet is the arx 65gr the box says 1650 fps,it’s a weird copper polymer bullet that i want to shoot into gel. As far as carry ammo the only thing i carry is 147gr hst rounds, i load my own and have never seen one fail to open. I have loaded them on the low end of published load data and shot them out of my 43x and they still expand. For rifle ammo i use a 64gr soft point and a 55gr frangible bullet that i load. They both seem to work extremely well, compared to a vmax round the soft point just seems to dominate ime.

The temperature of a gas increases as it comes under increased pressure. Compress a gas hard enough, it can reach a critical temperature, and go boom. Same concept is used in diesel engines; no spark plugs, just a mist and compression from the engine pistons. Those little combustions are caused by gas (aka air) being sucked into the channel by the bullet's wake then being trapped, and compressed to the point of auto-ignition by the collapsing temporary cavity(s). You can see the same thing happening in slow-mo footage of (simulated) depth charges.

Lehigh Defense bullets, their "claims" that the fluted tip bullets direct fluids perpendicular from the tip of the bullet and create permanent wound cavity larger than projectile. The actual fact is, their bullets are tumbling, much like a FMJ tumbles, but due to the sharp features, probably do a bit more tearing when they tumble. I'd still go with an expanding hollowpoint, whether lead or copper type.

That was fun to watch. So the extreme ammo’s shape, allows the force of the bullet to affect closer to its impact point rather than further away? So, a human torso is shorter than a rectangle of gel; the original fmj looked like its force generated upon impact, affected the furthest end of the gel the most, so when a 9 would hit a person, the most force generated is after it passes through?

So was that "explosion" caused by sonoluminescence ? Or was it superheating the air as the gel slammed back together? The bullet was completely clear of the gel... So it wasn't anything left behind by that...

Are you able to measure the rate of formation of the temporary cavity? Sort of like the speed of spalling chunks in the other vid.

Amazing how much unburnt powder is coming out with the projectile and out of spent casing at ejection.

Guys, you need to take a look on tradicional bullets like Keith's semi wad cutters, and compare it with one or two modern defense bullets! I'm sure everyone will get shocked!

Real quick I realize that when he shot the ballistics jail the second time he had a gun that had a extended barrel like a muzzle brake with a black slide and dark OD Green body but when it showed the dramatic slow motion effect of the close-up of the Glock it was a all black Glock with no extended barrel what's up with that and you can clearly see how flimsy the gun is whenever it ejects and the slot forces back but the polymer front bottom of the slide is bouncing like a rubber band

If you guys are mystified by a lighter projectile traveling at a higher speed then I'm not holding out much hope for the video, Lol. Also, you might want to reference that it's a Lehigh bullet as loaded by several ammunition manufacturers. Post viewing - great footage nonetheless, thanks for that, and I also saw your pinned comment providing your explanation. Good that you got that sorted.
