Just in case it isn't mentioned elsewhere, the reason for the secondary detonation in the gel is from the collapsing gasses. This is the same thing as a diesel engine combustion. The compression of the bubble collapsing compresses the gasses enough for ignition, and the fuel is either raw powder or the gel itself.

@@tihruytssgjjvsavcxtbvhj3429 overpenetration is useless because it means the force of the bullet is not quickly put into the target to wrangle the organs and deal fatal damage. A straight pass through will not do much. also, the bullet can end up in a innocent civilian.

So cool to see how everything acts/reacts in slow mo. I can’t tell if it was just me or if (especially on the ball round) you could see the bullet yawing a little as it exits the muzzle? Also I noticed when you get the dieseling effects in the gel, it’s always when the largest section of the temporary cavity recompresses. I’m gonna end up watching this a few more times now to see if there’s any solid footage of what the bullet is doing to make the wound channel larger in one area compared to another. Because if you noticed the dieseling happened closer to the exit with the ball round (I think about where it began to tumble) and closer to the entrance on the penetrator round (which seemed to possibly start tumbling and doing that lateral rotation closer to the entrance wound). Definitely gonna watch this a few more times to analyse it like a real nerd.

The larger cavities are due to the round beginning to transfer energy as it meets increased resistance; you can see how the shape of the bullet is a major factor in when the energy transfer occurs, especially in handgun calibers with short barrels and relatively low velocities.

The faster the bullet travels, the larger the cavity. That's why 556 is so deadly compared to 9mm. its cuz the high velocity puts so much trauma to ur organs.

The temperature of a gas increases as it comes under increased pressure. Compress a gas hard enough, it can reach a critical temperature, and go boom. Same concept is used in diesel engines; no spark plugs, just a mist and compression from the engine pistons. Those little combustions are caused by gas (aka air) being sucked into the channel by the bullet's wake then being trapped, and compressed to the point of auto-ignition by the collapsing temporary cavity(s). You can see the same thing happening in slow-mo footage of (simulated) depth charges.

If you hand load you’ll notice that all the load data in a lyman book is from testing in a 6” barrel. I’ve always assumed that is what mfr uses to work up loads because it’s better to load for the longest barrel and have un burnt powder in shorter barrels than to have ammo run out of steam halfway through a longer barrel. When I was hand loading I would always have to modify powder charge to fit my specific barrel length

Outstanding footage! I want to point out that the Extreme Defense is solid copper. I plan to use for my deer hunting this fall, as literature shows lead fragments end up in game meat. They are very small particles, you are not getting them out. So all copper is a HUGE plus for these (no pun intended). The shape of these rounds also causes more energy to dump sooner as seen in your slow motion frames, also a great aspect. Last, I shoot into rubber mulch. It stops even rifle rounds, and for target practice I suspect I can reuse these in my reloading system a number of times. The rifling grooves may be able to be filled electrochemically, (and swage or sand high parts?). This ammo is close to a buck per round, but if my hunch is correct about the reusable nature of this design, it will be well worth it. Especially if 9mm ever gets hard to acquire down the road again (EMP, Solar Flare, stupid politics, etc.)

@jamesfaul348 Жыл бұрын
That was fun to watch. So the extreme ammo’s shape, allows the force of the bullet to affect closer to its impact point rather than further away? So, a human torso is shorter than a rectangle of gel; the original fmj looked like its force generated upon impact, affected the furthest end of the gel the most, so when a 9 would hit a person, the most force generated is after it passes through?
@XiiShadowiiX Жыл бұрын

This is exactly what I’ve been looking for for quite some time. The advertised function of the flutes on the projectile don’t seem to function at all like Lehigh advertised them to. Rather they induce a very controlled tumbling inside the target. I don’t know why they didn’t say that, as it’s an actually tried and true method to increase the size of the wound channel unlike the claimed fluid dynamics BS that doesn’t work the way they claim. I avoided the ammo because I didn’t trust it’s effectiveness would translate to to actual tissue, but seeing the way it actually works suggests it should translate just fine. So it should not only have a comparable wound channel as many hollow points, it’s not going to get clogged or be damaged by barriers.

Lehigh Defense bullets, their "claims" that the fluted tip bullets direct fluids perpendicular from the tip of the bullet and create permanent wound cavity larger than projectile. The actual fact is, their bullets are tumbling, much like a FMJ tumbles, but due to the sharp features, probably do a bit more tearing when they tumble. I'd still go with an expanding hollowpoint, whether lead or copper type.
@joer83866 ай бұрын
This is utterly and completely false. The reason it is tumbling is because they are using silicone-based gelatin. They need to use organic just like the FBI uses to get accurate results.

One weird one i haven’t shot yet is the arx 65gr the box says 1650 fps,it’s a weird copper polymer bullet that i want to shoot into gel. As far as carry ammo the only thing i carry is 147gr hst rounds, i load my own and have never seen one fail to open. I have loaded them on the low end of published load data and shot them out of my 43x and they still expand. For rifle ammo i use a 64gr soft point and a 55gr frangible bullet that i load. They both seem to work extremely well, compared to a vmax round the soft point just seems to dominate ime.

What's the best FMJ (grain size and fps) for 9mm self-defense? I know an FMJ shouldn't even be in consideration, but I live in backwards New Jersey. Up to this year, NOBODY was approved for a CCW license until the recent SCOTUS ruling. The remaining issue is, NJ prohibits the carrying of hollowpoint ammo except for law enforcement, with zero exception. You can have JHPs in your home, but you cannot carry or transport JHPs. With that said, what grain and fps should I be looking at?
