Boris Balkan's error was to think and treat the 'Nine Gates' as riddle to solve, whereas it was actually a book of prophecy. Dean Corso was chosen and Balkan wasn't. The Girl (the Gatekeeper) was always waiting for Dean.

Great review, but i disagree with the basic idea that Corso was somehow a seeker of enlightenment. He is explicitly in the film just looking for money and is a liar and cheat. Balkan was a seeker of enlightenment and power, but he failed because he didn’t have the last page/key. And he didn’t have it b/c Lucifer was playing a rigged game all along, it wasn’t left to chance. Green Eyes was there loading the dice to ensure that Corso would succeed. The Ceniza brothers played their part too. I don’t see Lucifer as a mother either. Green Eyes was introduced during Balkans lecture at the exact moment he says the word “witch” while the camera shows her. She’s a demon/servant of Lucifer. She tempted to Corso as Eve tempted Adam, and as the serpent tempted Eve. This isn’t rational persuasion that characterizes Enlightenment as understood in the modern West. This is a primal pre-modern ritualistic initiation characterized by desire and lust, not reason. BIG difference.

Orange & green socks are symbolic of Mary Magdalene who was known as the "woman in orange" often depicted in paintings wearing an orange dress or robe & holding a green alabaster cup symbolic of the holy grail

This makes so much sense, thanks! About a year ago it finally clicked that the Whore of Babel is actually an allegory for Kundalini energy. Scriptures describe the whore of babel as a woman that wears red and purple (root chakra, crown chakra) riding a beast with seven heads and ten horns. There are 7 chakras and if you look at the Kabbalistic tree of life there are 10 spheres. Now that you have mentioned Mary Magdalene it is pretty much the same allegory. Jesus helped Mary heal her 7 demons that correspond with 7 chakras. She's wearing orange - sacral chakra - sexual energy and holds a green cup - heart chakra. So again, reference to transmutation of sexual energy through internal work, love and healing.

I am intrigued by your comment calling the girl Lucifer, the Mother of God. Where does this idea come from? Nowhere in any research have I discovered this concept, even in places where the idea of Lucifer being co-equal with God (virtually none) or co-equal with Jesus (more common). But the Mother of God, or even of femininity, or of sexuality? That really needs citation. I am sure somebody has it somewhere.

It gets pretty confusing. Lucifer is the Morning Star. The Morning star is Venus. Pagans worshiped The Morning Star as one of the main female deities. Greeks and the Romans obviously referred to Venus/Aphrodite as a Goddess of Love. Sophia is supposed to be a cosmic life giving force that radiates pure love. Due to inconsistencies in translation of various religious/spiritual texts, Lucifer is associated with both Sophia, Venus and the opposite of Christian god (satan). Sometimes Sophia is also associated with Lilith and an angel of wisdom.
