The performance between of the i5-8500T and the i5-9500T is very minimal. Many 9th gen machines were bought with the i5-8500T to shave off a $100 off the CPU price which is a significant savings if you were buying hundreds if not thousands of these units.
@handmedowntech4 ай бұрын
You opened my eyes on that one. I went back and checked the G5 specs from HP and the i5-8500T 8th Gen was an official option. And it makes sense for them to offer a cheaper option.
@etow80344 ай бұрын
@@handmedowntech Yeah since these were only sold to government contracts and large corporations it makes sense to buy the cheaper CPU since most of their applications is for non intensive office apps. A good thing to look for is if the warranty/service date has not expired, the service warranty for these units alone were in excess of $600usd+ and you can get parts and even in place service the next day free of charge.

I went to HP site for this PC - there is no 9th gen cpu's there. so this is interesting that bios can identify it. that means that there is code there for that cpu. Maybe bios sharing between mulitple computers.

I was surprised too. I believe it's the Q370 chip set. It supports 8th and 9th Gen. Q370 is what the G5 has too

@@handmedowntech I am not a cpu genious and know more about the old AMD than Intel. but from my experiences with AMD, the computer starts in a 'generic cpu' more - where it can run simple code. remember the code in the bios has to run to set things up - that included id of chip and then setup of its particular. If cpu was not identified - stop. I had a cpu that failed to work ( even though right AMD socket ). Had to downgrade to another cpu to get it to work. so for AMD - socket type was not the all deciding factor - the mother board had to support the CPU ( even if socket was correct ). and also, on the AMD motherboards - if you bought the wrong cpu, you have to put a downgraded cpu in - flash to newer bios - and then magically the cpu that failed now works. so Bios code ( for AMD ) must supporrt the cpu. and the second example was ryzen motherboards. I have seen chats on the subject and even saw notes on vendor's web site that as to what cpu requires what bios level. I cannot talk about Intel - it is not my specialty

Sounds pretty close to the Intel thing too. It was interesting that some K processors work in the G4 but others dont

If you're going to swap chips around why not upgrade it to the Core i7-9700t to get the extra cores? Not sure if it would be worth the cost though.

super helpful! What happens if you need a bigger power supply? Do you know how to upgrade the power supply? Would be cool to throw a 9th Gen i9 in there.
@handmedowntech3 ай бұрын
You can simply get a higher wattage power supply. I believe the 150w is the highest used on the units - mostly for the G4 with an added CPU and for cases where a "K" type CPU is used

Interesting. I tried this about a year ago, but with 65W 800 G4 mini (with perforated cover). Tried to upgrade from a i5 8500t to a i7 9700 but the computer would not boot. It beeped and the power button lit up red. If i remember correctly the error code meant that the cpu was not recognized. Fully updated BIOS (at the time) and used a 230W power supply for good measure, but did not work. If anyone did the same upgrade and it worked, let me know :)

The only diff between the 8th and 9th are few 100 Mhz of clock speed.. no other difference at low to mid range. At high end they have added extra threads to combat AMD but you will not use these in the G3/G4.

For a quick test you will need a 90w power supply. You can put in the 65w CPU without or without the heatsink and see if it boots to the BIOS. The system info will tell you the CPU installed.

Thanks! We plan on doing this in a couple of weeks. I think if we can get into the bios that should be good enough to prove the mb is good, let alone if it boots and starts the OS. It would be interesting to know if the i9 9900t will also work in the G4. In this video, you're going from a 6c12t cpu to a 8c8t cpu. I wouldn't expect much of a performance boost. The 9900t would give you 8c16t with a max turbo boost to 4.4 Ghz.

Except he didn't go from a 6c12t cpu to a 8c8t cpu, but from a 6c6t to another 6c6t, which is based on the same architecture but with a very slight frequency tweek. Having the same performance is really to be expected.

@robindelaguila92024 ай бұрын
@@jjb7920 if you want a short answer, you will not gain anything when it comes to GPU since both 8700t and 9900t use the same iGPU. On the flip side, you might see a mild increase in CPU performance. Though since it's in a small form factor device, I'm really not sure you'd get THAT much more performance. The 8700T is probably kneecapped already.
