My cousin Randy served in the south African bush wars, was separated from his squad one night during a firefight, lost 3 fingers in a knife fight with a combatant, took 8 guys prisoner, held them for 13 days in a ravine, walked them out to get back to his base, got jumped, ended 3 prisoners before being taken prisoner himself. 5 weeks in captivity, escaped during a raid, was shot twice in his left side, got rescued, served for 3 more years in which time he survived 2 helicopter crashes, a transport plane over shooting a runway and received shrapnel wounds whilst recovering in hospital from having his right leg amputated below the knee after a land mine incident, he now works at mine site as a shot firer. When I was a child he would watch movies like commando with us and compare what he had done with scenes from the movie. We all thought he was crazy until many years later he brought an old friend he served with to a christening where they both got high and sat around the table telling us stories about there time in South Africa. The thing that’s stands out the most is that he nor his friend are South African, they volunteered to serve and havnt received a pension. He visits occasionally, usually after a few weeks holidaying in Asian, stays a few days, gives us his new phoned number and leaves for another y months or so. He’ll respond to texts months after sending them but he responds to all text in a single message. My mom says his salary is paid directly into her bank account and he never withdraws any of it and we still don’t know how he manages to travel so often
