I'd compare it more to TVPaint (since I use Rasters more than vector) but honestly it's both of them.

@@FelixTheAnimator ToonBoom also has raster tools and capabilities. I would say they are as good as Opentoonz, althought I little lacking on quantity but better to control.

As far as I remember the new version has a horizontal timeline as well

That was mentioned in the video, although maybe a little too late in the segment describing that.

It does. I dunno why she insists on saying its vertical THEN saying it has a horizontal after quite some time even though the default is the horizontal one. I'm saying insists because she does this in every opentoonz video on this channel. Actually almost drew me away because I thought it was just too backwards like blenders right click thing in the older versions.

I was wondering if there are ways to know how many studios are currently using Opentoonz or versions of it (say modified or Toonz). Last time I saw, it does has a small place in the japan animation industry (like Ponoc, NUT studio, and of course Ghibli), but most studios use Celsys products, with just a few out there using others like Flash, TvPaint, Blender, etc (surprisingly Toon Boom's Harmony it's also an oddity among studios).
@nofuturo Жыл бұрын
Studios need a contact person they can quickly call up when software breaks or when they need it to do something it wasn't designed for. Celsys has the advantage that they are based in Japan and they target their products to the manga/anime industry. Studios there will gladly pay Celsys a consulting fee if they help them hit their production targets and deadlines. The idea of Opentoonz being open source sounds really nice on paper, but in reality most studios (specially smaller ones) can't be bothered to have a dedicated group of programmers modifying the code to their needs. Programmers are expensive and the anime industry is notorious for paying low wages. The only non Japanese animation software that was widely adopted by game and anime studios in Japan was Softimage. The way they were able to court this clientele was by establishing a Japanese office and having techs such as Michael Arias who were fluent in Japanese and understood the anime industry inside and out.

@bag_of_gold8775 Жыл бұрын
OpenToonz has the same puppet animation capabilities as Cartoon Animator. Maybe CA ones are more polished (being focused on puppet animation), but in principle everything doable in CA is doable in OpenToonz too Besides, CA is comfortable, accessible, easy to use and all, but I find it very hard to imagine it being used for full-lenght movies in certain style. You could never get a Studio Ghibli-style movie from CA, the way I see it EDIT: also large project ALWAYS require months to realize AT LEAST, even in big studios. No movie or TV series can be done in a week, the imposing amount of work is not due to ths software but the nature of the artform itself
@catke590 Жыл бұрын
@@bag_of_gold8775 From what I'm seeing Cartoon Animator seems like a specialize software rather than a generalist like opentoonz. We need to differentiate between both.

Sin embargo, para alguien que recien esta iniciando o para un estudio que no pueda hacer el pago de licencias, este programa sirve bastante.
@bag_of_gold8775 Жыл бұрын
@@catke590 yes that's exactly what I meant. Cartoon Animator is obviously gonna be better in puppet animation because that's his main purpose, so that's not a problem regarding OpenToonz itself Thanks for explaining it better than I could lmao

I would have say the same a couple of versions back, but I think it works pretty well these days. They just released the newer version a month back (the newest since... I don't know, a year or two?), you can give it another try now and check if it works.
