There had been instances of slavery in centuries past, but with context you will see that those instances are very different in detail and only similar in forced categorization. As an example, the form of slavery that had existed in America prior and simultaneously was the more familiar iteration also termed sevitude, where a person often had a term to pay off a debt or in trade of… What we speak about more in America is the form that in context has its own iteration almost exclusive to the Americas, where humans were split from family and dehumanized through torture, rape, and subjugation for generations thereafter. White Americans in many cases just can’t face their comfort being a direct product of that. All it takes and certain policies to be implemented. People can go on with their naturally taught hate regardless.

As an 8th grade American history teacher i am in a unique position to teach my students the full reality of systemic racism of the north and south and the role that capitalism played in keeping slaves and also for starting the civil war. I am not sugar coating our history. I am emphasizing that what we say and what we do are two different things and we have been struggling to live up to equality since 1776.
