John Oliver did a bit where he spoke to US politicians and Aussie politicians about gun control. It's actually funny and also kinda crazy seeing the different way we look at gun control. It might be an interesting reaction. He talks a bit about how Aussie gun laws changed after the Port Arthur massacre and what politicians think their job should be. As an Aussie myself I'm glad the politicians at the time did something to change things even though it wasn't as welcome as Jim Jefferies suggests in this

That series was quite extraordinary…. Incredible insights into (in my opinion) the idea of “career politicians” vs individuals who want to improve the lives of their constituents. One of the US politicians when asked what the goal/aim of his job was, literally said to be re-elected. His goal was to stay in power. Compared to the Aussie MP from QLD who lost his seat after the port Arthur gun laws - he said that was ok because he felt he was doing the best thing for his community. Not about power, about people. Love your reactions!! ❤🐨

the purpose of the second amendment was to ensure that all americans took their own self protection seriously. there was never a provision to keep a standing army in the united states laid out in the constitution. the intent was that every american would be a part of a local militia who would defend his or her town from an invading force, should one ever come to our shores... this was the days on single shot muskets and cannons. that is obviously not the way shit went down, but the second amendment is still the second amendment, and getting rid of it will never happen. it takes 3/4 of the states to ratify a new amendment, which is what would need to happen to repeal an existing amendment. guns will be a part of america, forever. those that are unhappy with that particular paradigm are free to leave.

That's not true even after the gun bye backs Australia has many times had mass shootings. A mass shooting means 3 or more people where shot. Hell I'm in Australia and have been to the city many times and felt scared by large groups of thugs as I don't have pistols, and my rifles have to stay on the farm. When visiting friends I don't have a pistol to protect myself or my friends if thugs break in 🤷♂️ Americans are very lucky to have that piece of mind that they can legally carry a pistol.

@MertAus2 жыл бұрын
Yeah for sure it seems like their priorities are definitely skewed. It seems like a large number of Americans are almost brainwashed into accepting that the way things are at the moment is the best way but I hope the younger generation can get out of that mindset and see that the things you mentioned (free education, healthcare and gun control) are best for their society.
@ashxf2 жыл бұрын
American here, and I have to tell you, most of us do want universal healthcare. We really do, and we're not against helping people. We want to do it. The problem is the private insurance lobby has our politicians by the gonads. They bought and paid for all of our elected officials who then get up in Congress and go on about how costs are going to rise, how you won't have any choice of doctors, basically scare people into believing all kinds of stuff that just isn't true in other countries. And it's not dumb people who believe it either. I'm a librarian, I work all day getting people accurate information and I have coworkers who don't know that paying an extra $150-$200 a month in taxes for universal healthcare is still going to be cheaper than the $350 a month we all pay for crappy private insurance that has lovely little things like "copays" and "in network doctors only" and HMO plans offered by the same company that offers PPO plans, but the specialist your child needs to see only takes the PPO plan but not the HMO plan...from the same company. So you still have to pay out of pocket for care. (my story) We have free education too, and threaten to take that away and people freak out. But compare free education to free healthcare as just something the government provides and some people simply cannot get their brains to click into place to accept it. That's how deep the private insurance industry has dug in. We do have a universal healthcare system, Medicaid, but you only qualify for it if you make under $30K a year and you have a long list of specifications. And it's administered on a state by state level, so conservative states basically have zero functional Medicaid due to all the cuts, and most people just go without it and go to the ER when they get sick. (In America the ER has to treat you for a medical crisis, whether you can pay or not. They bill you, but poor people just don't pay it and the hospital eats the costs. The state is supposed to reimburse the hospitals but often they don't) So that's what we're working with on *healthcare.* Try talking to people about guns and people flippin lose their minds. Personally, I think every gun in America should be rounded up and burned and if you MUST own one, you go through a thorough background check, mental healthcare check, you need at least 3 references to testify that you're not nuts, take a gun safety class, qualify on a range, and have a method in your house to secure them and this must be licensed and renewed yearly, like we do with our drivers' licenses. Suggest even that and people want to fight you. It's nuts. The NRA is a powerful lobby with a lot of money to spend and they do. There's a shooting every day in my city as a result. One happened in a "good" neighborhood right outside the mall. I was less than 500 yards away driving down the road. 4 people died right there in the street. It's on KZbin, someone filmed it. Those of you in sane countries, never ever let someone tell you that you need guns, private healthcare or private education. Guard what you have with everything you've got. You can at least walk your streets safely.

Correlation does not equal causation. I know what would've stopped the Port Arthur massacre. If they hadn't have waited to lock a guy who had a history of violent, sadistic, dangerous, reckless generally unbalanced behaviors up in a psychiatric hospital until after he killed all those folks at Port Arthur. Similarly, here in the USA, we stopped keeping people dangerously unbalanced in psychiatric hospitals and that's when we started having a problem with mass shootings. The shootings in Parkland, Florida and Highland Park, Illinois and Uvalde, Texas and Sutherland Springs and Ohama, Nebraska (that was a particularly egregious case) and virtually every other mass shooting were all committed by people that would've, years ago, been permanently placed in a psychiatric hospital. The Parkland and Uvalde shooters had very disturbing histories that read very similarly to each other.

When I was a kid, half of the TV shows were Westerns, where the good guys shot the bad guys or the Indians. Later, it became cop shows, which continued with the legitimacy of backing up your ego's opinions with a gun. A few other good Jim Jefferies bits are "Freedumb", "God Is Drunk At A Party", "Donald Trump", and "Airplane Etiquette". Then there are George Carlin and Bill Burr.

The issue in America is it is a HYPER-VIOLENT society. People DO mug you, and break into houses and hold up gas stations, with guns.. Happened again just the other day. Guy holds up shop, shop owner shoots him and he shoots the shop owner, BOTH DIED. 2 rednecks were road-raging in hillbilly pickups, BOTH fired off rounds at each other, and BOTH hit the other guys kid in the back seat. BOTH CHARGED and 2 injured children. Only through regulation and licensing will they START to remove the illegal guns from criminals in their society. IT WILL TAKE YEARS.. But this is the ONLY way to reduce their gun crime.
@caddyguy53692 жыл бұрын
Reversing the societal decay would be much more effective at reducing violent crime than requiring permission from daddy government to have an inanimate chunk of metal.

@@BassMatt1972 Why are you quoting "societal issues" I didn't say that. That is not how quotes work. What are all the same societal issues as you see them? Scared to fill out a form or not is entirely not the point. Jim is pretty funny, but you are a much better comedian if you actually believe that last line. Are the criminals going to follow the regulation and licensing? How about defensive firearm use. What do you think criminal stats in the US would look like if we did what you propose? Violent crime, not the narrow minded view of "gun" crime.

I must mention, here in australia once guns were banned, the sale of knives went through the roof. The one extremely important aspect that moome is addressing is....human nature. Take the knives away and it'll be baseball bats and tyre irons. If people are pissed off, they don't care what they use as long as they get a result. Until the universe has one huge Relaxa Tab , nothing will change.

This is the best Gun Control "joke". Everything he say's is facts, the gun/slave comparison is brilliant. American's are the only people i ever hear mentioning the Constitution, why is that? Every country has one but most of us don't know what it says, it's probably online somewhere if we need it. But it's drilled into Americans as kids and they pray to the flag every morning at school (let's be honest, the Pledge of Allegiance is basically a prayer)

I don't think JJ is really on the gear like he says or he wouldn't be able to keep his very clever act coherent. He often appears humorously tipsy while downing copious amounts of beer which I also think is part of the act. It allows him to make wandering, brutally in-your-face observations and funny twists with that Australian grrrrr about it. Funny but harmless.

U.K. still have the ability to acquire firearms. Handguns required an overall length of X. Handguns also require a much harder to get license. U.K. generally operates on a shotgun certificate. Parts of Wales are less restrictive. Essentially it is a ban via FIAT as cost and complexity dissuades most people in attempting to get a firearm. I don't consider the country to be free noting the arbitrary exercise of power of the state.
@aussiedude58042 жыл бұрын
In Australia we still have guns as well, you just need a license for certain guns, a hunting licence for a hunting gun, a license to have a gun on your farm if you’re a farmer, a professional shooting license if you’re a professional shooter etc etc. It’s actually a very simply argument, you don’t just walk in Walmart as a 16 year old and walk out with a super powered sports car, you need a strict license to learn to drive and strict controls on purchasing a high powered car. What’s so confusing about common sense laws for safety and how is this in any way intruding on your rights. Your profile is a picture of a gun, you LIKE guns, that’s it, that’s your argument, just like the skit.
@1911GreaterThanALL2 жыл бұрын
@@aussiedude5804 I don't think it is common sense as licenses don't guarantee you do not commit a crime or are neglegent. It doesn't make sense to artificially increase the cost and complexity when racial tensions and history over firearms are center stage.

TBH, I was a bit hesitant to click and watch this video, since I've heard Jim Jefferies in the past and he's turned me right off with some of the extremely misogynistic crap he's come out with. But in this case, I was actually finding myself smiling and laughing at him because he was 1 zillion percent on point. (Although, there were times when I didn't find him too humourous, making light of certain tragedies such as the Sandy Hook massacre). He smashed every stupid theory as to why American believe they're righteously entitled to own a gun. Which, as Jim said, doesn't have too much weight to their argument anyway, besides using the Second Amendment - which CAN legitimately be VERY EASILY amended at any time. Thank you for sharing this clip and sharing your views with us.

Be aware that guns were not banned in Australia after the Port Arthur killings , but the gun laws were very much thightened in trying to make almost impossible to own one if you have not a valid reason for doing so. And rapid fire assualt weapons were the prime target, as all hunters and target shooters see them as no sane shooters who have any need for them.

When Jim Jeffries did this special back in 2014, I believe he was correct that the Port Arthur mass shooting was at the time, the largest mass shooting that resulted in 35 deaths. Since then, I believe the Las Vegas mass shooting in 2017 is now the largest mass shooting in the world, that resulted in 60 deaths.

Hmm, the Port Arthur massacre was only a month after Dunblane. It happened near me, at a place that my family used go to regularly. It was my playground and it was turned into something monstrous but the lives that were saved after is the only right legacy for Port Arthur and Dunblane and... so many, now famous, places in America.

We visited Port Arthur in Tasmania - I won't say the 'joke' I made going in but my partner laughed WAY too hard. It was a total tragedy and if you look it up many certain people will say it was a government hit job and not just one gun man etc. Not true - I know the main detective that worked on that case. He told me EVERYTHING! In fact - more Australians bought more guns after the 'buy back guns' by John Howard was put into action. Just a fact.
