Mate, we grew up drinking from the garden hose let alone from the tap. Single use plastic utensils have been banned for a few years now and the utensils are made from bamboo. The standard takeaway container is recyclable and often made from recycled material to start with. The switched outlet isn't to save energy. It's to help prevent people hurting themselves with live appliances. How many deer did she see in downtown LA? Of course wild kangaroos aren't in the middle of a major city.

My best friend moved from Melbourne to Florida (about 10 years ago) for a 6 months Disney program thing. For the first 2 weeks, she was deathly ill, couldn't get out of bed, couldn't eat, weak, grey. They were about to end the trip and send her back home when someone noticed she's been doing nothing else but drinking a lot of tap water the entire time. Got her a filtered bottle and she perked back up, 2nd life 😂 At the time, turns out it was ranked one of the most polluted and contaminated water sources in the country 😬 Australians take clean tap water for granted! We forget a lot of places you can't or shouldn't do that!

There's too much American media, music, movies and TV shows in Australia. I prefer Australian and English shows. She's commenting on only a small part of Australia, it's not all the same. We have free buses in inner city Perth and Adelaide. Older generations are more likely to say bless you when someone sneezes. The engaged tone is shorter and quick. I have kangaroos near me in Perth but it's a state park only 17 kms approx from Perth surrounded by suburbs. I get annoyed with UTubers who make broad statements about Australia when they have only been here a short time and hardly seen any of the country.😊

The sockets have an on/off switch because we run on 240V and the US runs on 120V. It is a safety mechanism. For your sockets to be constantly live is an accident waiting to happen.

We can have switches because it is economical enough to do so, generally our outlets are rated to 10Amps at 230Volts, 110~120V outlets need to provide double the current to provide the same power. Therefore, the switch would have to be larger too. Power= Voltage x Current.

It is a safety mechanism but not the one you're thinking of. Back in the day power outlets/plugs were not required to be insulated. This meant that if you removed a cheap plug from the wall there was a chance that electricity could arc and cause a shock. At the time the original version our power plugs were designed there was no universal safety standards for power outlets. So there were multiple companies working on various designs, Plugs with fuses in them, baseplates with fuses in them etc, etc. Two companies (one which would later become Clipsal) worked together on designing the simplest and cheapest solution they could think of in order to dominate the market. They ended up taking a US plug and pairing it with the on/off switch with a few important changes (like grounding). The product hit the market in the late 1920's and was such a success that by time the government released the first safety standards in the 1930's the design was incorporated into the regulations.

I remember children safety plugs, not connected to anything and you’d put in the socket but difficult for children to pull out so they couldn’t electrocute themselves. Great safety idea.

You know a country is broken at its very core when you can’t drink the tap water. Many, many years ago (like the 1950s?) cruise ships would not take on drinking water in Adelaide, but that was the exception, and that van sanded when they brought their water filtration and processing up to standard, but it’s disgraceful that you can’t drink tap water in some places in the US in 2024.

Perth city and Joondalup have free buses called CAT's (Central Area Transit services). They are different colours for different routes. There are 5 colours for Perth and 3 colours for Joondalup. On Sunday's, travel is free on all Transperth bus, train and ferry trips from first service until last service.

Shes spot on with the birds. When I travelled last year in europe for 4 months the one thing i missed was the soound of the birds whilst in bed waking up and coming home from work. Especially from nq where I grew up. lorikeets, cockatoos, kookaburras and flying fox bats. I however don't miss the sound of one particular bird, n thats the curlew late at night. Shudder, that one is death curdling. Haven't heard that one much since been in seq.

The phone tone she played was the ring tone here in Australia, an engaged signal is a series of longer tones of about 1/2 second. The dial tone is a constant tone. In perth, we have free buses in the CBD and there is a dedicated loop service called CAT buses that is free too, there are 4 or 5 different loops to different parts of the city. Switches on power points aren't primarily to save power, they are for safety. I was always taught, turn the switch off before unplugging or plugging in.

I told him it was unlikely but not impossible. An hour later I called him over to the window so he could watch one bound down the street. It was the only one i saw when i worked there.

Funnily enough, a lot of Americans think that all the singers and actors they see in America are American. They don't realise how many Aussies are performing there. As kids, we learn to sing a jingle (this one is abbreviated) that helps. "Look to the right, look to the left, look to the right again. Walk straight across the road, don't run." My brother has kangaroos every day in his backyard in Nelson Bay, we have koalas in trees in our backyard in Sydney, 15 mins from the CBD.

Yeah, I’m from Wollongong (known as The Gong). My kids went to Wollongong Uni too. It’s in a beautiful spot and a great Uni. We drive on the other side of the road, NOT the wrong side of the road. The power point and switch is also a safety feature, especially for toddlers. Of course you’re not going to see Koalas and Kangaroos in the city. The Gong Uni is at the base of Mt Ousley, travel up there of a night on your way to Sydney and you have a chance of seeing them. My daughter hit a deer along that stretch of freeway, thank God she was alright but her car was a write-off. I LOVE, LOVE LOVE North Gong Beach 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

From Google...in the US, the standard voltage for residential properties is 120 volts at a frequency of 60Hz. Australia operates at a higher voltage of 240 volts at a frequency of 50Hz. The increased voltage can pose a greater risk of electric shock. Hence, the safety switches. One of the main reasons why the US retained 120V as its standard power supply was due to the power grid already being largely established, making it too costly to switch over. The main benefits of 120V power are quite limited.

TL;DR : American households actually have 240V power. The US houses that have 120V power points are actually supplied with 240V. The way they do their supply is completely different to ours. They get their supply via a centre tapped transformer. These provide 120V from each outer terminal and the centre tap. The centre tap forms the neutral and the outer terminals are phase shifted 180° from each other. Think of it as -120V, 0V, and +120V. Confused? Probably. What this means in practice is that lights and power run on 120V but high power devices can connect between the outer connectors and get the full 240V. For those familiar with 3 phase power, do not confuse that with this. What I described is what they do with a single phase.

Australian here. You can drink tap water anywhere you're on reticulated (mains) water. Other rural or remote places are on tank, well or bore water. Bore water can be a bit mineral-tasting to a lesser or greater extent. Tank water is rainwater collected from roofs and generally tastes really good. Well water might need processing. I think a lot of Americans don't realise how many movie and music artist are actually Australian. There has been quite a lot of YT content that covers this.

The Americans rely primarily on "Bore water" which isn't considered potable (suitable for human consumption) here in Australia. I've met some 3rd world tourists, and now it's apparent that it's also Americans, who are very surprised to hear that tap water is perfectly drinkable (almost...especially not west of Warwick in QL ;)p ) but everywhere else in Australia. Tap water is great. At least two litres a day is my advice on hydration.

The drinking water is so good here along the east coast of Australia because most catchments are naturally filtered by thick vegetation cover and then filtered with UV or chlorine before exiting the tap (there's a bit more to it of course). These catchments are generally closed to public to ensure no toxins enter the water system, South Australia, Central Australia and parts of Western Australia have not so nice drinking water. Depends on where you live to the location of Kangaroos and Koalas. I have Koalas at home and swamp wallabies, but no Kangaroos. However if I travel 500 meters up the road I will see Kangaroos, but no Koalas. You can see Kangaroos very close to Melbourne, especially around the suburbs.

Roundabouts everywhere. They're built to get rid of a lot of the old stop sign crossroads where space and funding is available. It reduces the amount of accidents of people asleep at the wheel running their stop sign, I assume it's cheaper than doing up an intersection for traffic lights, not as obnoxious as lights and they keep the traffic flowing, provided people know how to use them. You can drink tap water anywhere around the coastal regions. Out west it's all bore water, and when I lived out there many years ago, it was strange. Bore water is very high in mineral, and there are places you can't drink it unless its treated with soda to soften it. Larger towns had treatment plants to make it potable. It stinks, but tastes okay, which is weird. When I was there, it came out of the tap boiling hot, and you couldn't have a shower, only a bath, which you had to run several hours before you got in to allow it to cool. Nobody bothered with hair conditioner because with the softener, it was really good for your hair. And of course nobody bothered with hot water systems.

I'd say this lass has been seeing and hearing mostly parrots; probably lorikeets. We have some of the most glorious songbirds anywhere but many of those are black and white. Lots of people still say Bless you however we are, by and large, a non-religious nation. Hopefully we are also learning to be more tolerant of those who are religious. Roundabouts are pretty much everywhere. Most places have potable tap water... but not all. The ring signal is pretty similar to a lot of others. Bit confused there.

I really hope your a kid. The use of having running water even if you can't drink it is to wash in you know shower bath wash your hands. To flush your toilet. To have water to clean your cloths wash your dishes clean your house with. Imagine if every time you needed to wash you had to carry water from a well or a town water supply. And you can drink it you just have to boil it or filter it 1st to make it safe. Easier to have the water come directly into your house out of a tap that you have to purify to drink than have to carry all the water you need to your house. Think about it.

You know where finances are limited making tap water drinkable has a cost a goverment may be able to afford running water but not the facilities and ongoing cost to make it drinkable. Because we can't do something perfectly should we not do the best we can. They aren't avoiding the step they may not have the resources to provide it. It may be a work on progress they took the 1st step running water the next step is to make it fit for consumption. In Perth we have the CAT buses which are free. There are maps of the routes at the stops, and you can hit a button under the map and it will give the time of the arrival of the next bus.

Cockatoos are definitely loud. They screech. The water in most places is safe to drink, especially the big cities. Tasmania has really good water, as well as Melbourne. It often depends on the catchments and how much they have to treat it. But, you get used to the water in your city too and can become biased to it.

The water catchment in Melbourne is one of only six water catchments in the world where the activities of humankind are totally fenced off from that catchment. It makes the water as purely natural and unpolluted as you would find. Can absolutely drink from the tap. Some small and remote communities in Australia may have to filter and/or boil water before consumption.

tap water here is usually perfect to drink. we get our water from large dams . i believe usa water is from wells and underground sourced. the water in south oz is not as good and water across the nullabor is well sourced and heavy in minerals but you can still drink it.

I live in Canberra - the capital city. We actually DO have kangaroos EVERYWHERE, even right in the city. You have to watch out for them at dusk or you may hit one with your car.

The isolation switches on power sockets don't save power. They do give you a save way to turn off a faulty appliance that might not be safe to touch. But mostly I think they just got written into the standards at a time when not all table lamps or floor lamps had switches on them.

Outback Bore Water, ugh never drink it. Our Plastic to Go Food Containers ARE recyclable and it is usually bamboo utensils. As for the Bird Sounds being obnoxious obviously in urban areas of the US they seem to have very little wildlife unlike here. Entertainment is Global in Australia, you watch the main TV Channels and yes a lot of US shows, as stated below the internet gives you a better coverage of shows and films from overseas. No Wrong or Right side of the road, basically the driver is always in the middle of the road either way. Wollongong is surrounded by National Parks, how has she not gone there.

I live in fairly central Brisbane (10km from the CBD, inner suburbs) and there is a park walking distance from my house where there's a decent number of wild koalas. To the point where you have to watch out for them occasionally when driving. But before I moved here it was rare to see koalas in the wild, other people are surprised when I tell them

Some small inland communities do have periodic water issues. It usually stems from high manganese content. The water will be discoloured, brown and can have a strong smell. The council responsible for water in the area does take steps to address it when it happens. I know of instances where bottled water has been supplied and tankers driven in until the water treatment can be corrected.

My MIL has a koala that hangs out in a tree outside her house in Brisbane. Brisbane also has 3 free bus services for the more inner city areas (City, Spring Hill, and South Brisbane Loops).

I live in Adelaide and our drinking water is ok, but it does depend how close and which water source you're pulling from. I never realised the A & C were for clockwise and anticlockwise on the bus routes - we have free city/CBD transport in the city free bus & the tram but you pay outside the city. And people dont say 'bless you' as much because we have a much higher number of non religious people or diverse religious backgrounds so its just not polite to assume somebody wants to hear 'bless you'. And as for kangaroos and Koalas - we have heaps of those in various suburban parts of Adelaide but we are a fairly sleepy city! my folks are from Scotland (Glasgow) and I always love to hear your reactions to aussie content. You can drink the water out of just about every tap other than dam water in the country / outback areas . It could also be bore water , but every major city processes its water so its safe to drink. Some are tastier than others but you get that.

Yeah taps with Bore water are usually labelled with large 'Do Not Drink' signs and are mainly used for watering the garden etc. Places with bore water usually also have regular taps inside that you can drink.

Just take a 1 1/2 hour drive from Wollongong down to Cave Beach in Booderee National Park near Jervis Bay. Lots of kangaroos and wallabies in the camp ground as you walk down to the beach. Pick a nice late summer/autumn day with a small swell and light north winds and you will be swimming at one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Beware though of having a picnic among the kangaroos as there are lots of ticks where they lie on the grass and if you take the walk south to the next beach in wet weather there are lots of leeches and when its hot lots of big red belly black snakes can be on the track.

Koalas are endangered but you do see them every now and then depending on where you are. More in suburbia and bushland areas then in the city.

The switch on the wall sockets is like a tap. Imagine if you left the electricity on and the cable to the TV burst. Your lounge room would be flooded with electrons. You'd have to call in a hazmat team to clean it up, then replace all the damaged carpets, walls, furniture. Very expensive. Far far better to turn off the electricity at the socket and prevent all that nastiness.

I live in outback Australia. Our town water is taken from the Darling river. Generally, it’s perfectly drinkable but has a distinct chlorine taste which I personally don’t enjoy. However, during the last drought, our water was affected by a blue green algae outbreak. The river also experienced a massive fish kill due to poor quality water. Literally hundreds of thousands of fish died. The water had to be so heavily treated that it was undrinkable. I have also lived in a different town that had no access to ground water. No rivers, lakes or dams. Our water came from an artesian bore. It was drinkable but had a noticeable scent and taste. It didn’t seem to bother most people but it always made me feel a little nauseous.

Perth has 4 city clipper buses all are free they cover EAST, WEST city areas and Northbridge , a lot of what she said is purely because of where she is in Australia for example weather in Western Australia is completely different to the East side, we also drink tap water in the West & although seeing a koala is rare kangaroos are often seen in outer suburban areas as well as regional WA.

I live in Perth Western Australia and have for the last 60 years. It is just like any other big city, we have may free buses running around the city they display a big cat on the side of them hence called cat buses. at the golf course where I play there are hundreds of Kangaroos and you don't go anywhere near them if they have Joeys (baby Kangaroos) with them as they will attack to protect their young.

Roundabouts are everywhere in NSW country towns, in my town i can count at least 12. Personally I buy my water here, the local water supplies aren't the best and get worse dryer times, Rain water is always our best choice especially out here. I am in The New England, NSW. we will get high 30's in summer and -10 or less in winter

Australia has its own movies and shows but it's cheaper for stations to license something else than produce content. The Australian music scene is massive even though we still listen to American and other foreign stuff too. Australia also shares a lot of culture with California through surfing, Aussies adopted surfing very early and surfers travel.
