I have a cousin who served in the US Army in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He told me while he was out on patrol, their convoy got ambushed immediately after the lead vehicle hit a IED. They were engaged by the Taliban on both sides of the valley who fired with small arms, rockets and mortars. A10 support was called in just in time as they were getting surrounded. Two A10s showed up to strafe both sides of the valley and the firefight stopped immediately. That is how effective A10s are. Even if the enemy wasn't completely wiped out, the sound of those guns really did put enough fear into the Taliban to make them break contact.

I’m just a retired Army Infantry Senior NCO and been in two wars. I was almost wiped out by an A-10 while in the 101st ABN on the Iraqi border, scared the hell,out of us but he broke off his run at the last second. Then later in 2003 we had enemy in a building pumping out fire down our MSR, the A-10 came down and it got real quiet after one pass. In the 80’s-90’s we were trained to coordinate close air support and taught the various munitions at their disposal and the best approach vectors for max impact but today they have AF liaison coordinators to talk with the birds. We knew their frequencies and once in the Gulf War we had 16” naval rifles on our support card but just for a couple days, that one kind of shocked us Grunts, lol, the 16” is more of a zip code weapon, lol. Infantry leaders carry a couple M4 magazines that’re full of tracer rounds which I use to direct fire for my platoon/squad or even air assets. Always put a few tracers at the bottom of each mag to let you know when you’re running low, during a fight, tracking ammo consumption isn’t that accurate. And always put on some tourniquets on one leg and upper arm, just safety pin it in place so when you’re hit, you can quickly clamp it down, the old cloth equipment straps work great as tourniquets if you run low. Always carry extra HC smoke grenades, you’ll need them more than you think.

You can see he didn't use the camera. The "dip check" at the very end of the video was actually to get the target marked and camera pointed. Its simply smoke and being talked on. As for the talk on, its really a lot easier than it sounds. For example something like "see the big building, its to the south just next to the red shack". A bit of confirmation and you have both people on the same place and, more importantly, confirmation of that. Thats also why 2 didn't do a run on the first, he wasn't completely confirmed as to where to go. After seeing the impact he was ready to go but 1 asked him to wait until the second run.

@@Mrwizard-ck7oe funny how you say that. Colombia got rid of its insurgency, Sri Lanka got rid of its Tamil Tiger insurgents and Pakistan got rid of its own version of the Taliban. You can certainly win against insurgents as long as you're not the invader. If you invade Afghanistan, topple the government and call them insurgents, while loosing to them, I don't know what you've been smoking bud. Anyways, id like to keep this discussion frank, honest and civil. True, insurgencies aren't easy to deal with. All the counties I mentioned had massive losses. The unique position of Afghanistan is that its the government that's in the mountains waging gorilla warfare against the invader. Not a rebel group, not some misfits like Al-Nusra who has a claim to power. Its simply the government. I hate their ideology, but facts are facts. Its exactly like when the soviets invaded Afghanistan and the west hailed these same Taliban(who were the Mujahideen) as hero's and keepers of Western conscience. Same shit different names.

Friendlies north of the target and the A-10 strafes from the south to north. What could not possibly go wrong with that?!? 🤦♂️ As a former infantryman, I would prefer air support to come in over my head from behind me, firing to my front, rather than approaching from my front and firing towards me (or better yet, cross my front from one side to the other laterally). I note the splash of rounds from his first burst fell way beyond the smoke. During a REFORGER ex in Germany some 42 years ago, as a Canadian infantryman with 4CMBG, we had an A-10 swoop in to strafe us after we successfully took a bridge crossing from American troops defending it. It was the first time I saw an A-10 in action. Didn't hear him approach (over the roar of our M113's and Leopards nearby) until he was directly over us. After making his first high energy strafing pass, he climbed at a high angle of attack, bleeding energy from the pass and suddenly executed a hammer-head manoeuvre to come at us for a second pass - it literally looked like he made a 180° turn on his left wing-tip. I was in awe - and thankful that if real conflict ever broke out between the Warsaw Pact and NATO, he was on our side.
@henryatkinson14792 жыл бұрын

The ideal approach is diagonal across your front. In the heat of the moment, communications is key. In one situation our controller called a strike and the approach was from our front. Before I could reach over to correct him, the pilot responded negative; confirm friendly and enemy locations; I'll approach from the East (diagonal) to your location. I read early in the AFG conflict, a SF team called in Close Air and mistakenly reversed coordinates for friendly and enemy. Lost at least seven of the team, but an investigation cleared the pilot as the transmission was recorded. An OLD Veteran told me "sonny, there ain't no such thing as friendly fire".
