I only got serious about three years ago. Been meaning to do it my whole life but after I retired I decided to give it a shot. I passed all three tests a month apart, I went from Tech to Extra in 60 days. Then I got my VE credentials and helped a few others become Hams. Now I am learning CW and running a CW learning net every Sunday. I am up to 15 wpm but getting to 20 wpm is kicking my butt. I will get there eventually.

@@suburbanryder well done!! I have started CW a bunch of times, but never seem to have the spare time yet to devote to it, so havent made much progress with it. I have done some building, but I just run out of time..... we've moved too, so I had to take down my HF antenna, and havent convinced the wife well enough yet to set up a new one, so I stick with 2 meter and 70 cm most of the time. Thanks for sharing bud!

Ham radio is all about handling emergency communications and traffic. We sent 50 hams down to Puerto Rico and got the emergency communications back on track using ham radios. The towers for the trunked radios were all without power but we Hams always have a plan b to communicate.

Thought about buying a Cushcraft R9 HF all band vertical but they want big bucks for it. want with a vertical kit I bought from a guy over in England who calls himself DX Commander on KZbin. took a few days to get it put together but am not happy with the swr on any of the bands. Since it is a vertical 1/4 wave wire antenna I think all the elements a to long so I am going to be working on getting that fixed. Talking on a 10-80 end fed wire up as an inverted V in a tree. Does ok but needs an antenna tuner on most bands.

I don't have anything yet for 80 meters. I mostly hang on 20, and 40 for the CW QSOs and such. I also have a 10/11 meter vertical although the bands are crap now.

@@suburbanryder Hopefully one day we can have a qso on 40 or 20.

I have a bit of an antenna farm at my house now. LOL
@PlainsRyker5 жыл бұрын
@@chuck_howard Looking forward to seeing it. I've never had a house where I could have a decent antenna. Best I had was a ground mounted vertical for a while on HF.
