My cousin was a Warthog driver in the first two Gulf wars and used to send me letters about missions just like this. It was what solidified my interest in aviation and made me want to fly fighters.

I did boot camp at Fort Knox, Ky. I absolutely LOVED when we would patrol at night. The A-10's would hit the range and I was treated to the sinister howl of the A-10 engine with flashes of light and booms as they pounded the range.

The thing that really makes the A-10 so awesome for CAS is it's ability to loiter for what feels like days, and carry enough ordinance to stay busy the whole time. Look at how much freedom GS dispensed in this video, and he still had 6 Mavericks, 2 9x's, a bunch of rockets, a 500 pounder, and plenty of 30mm left. I'd love to see a competition between this and the Apache for who can get the most points/kills in a single flight.

Those rockets were pretty nice. I find it interesting that the A10 often relies upon targeting techniques that were developed in WW2 (albeit with some rather powerful technical enhancements). There's something to be said for "point and shoot and the projectile will fly in a straight line."
